Mini Challenge #1, Once Upon a Time:
Dates: 6/17 - 6/23

The How To's:
Every fairy tale starts with once upon a time…
➜This week any book who's cover has a method of telling time on it (clock, sun, watch, hourglass, etc)
➜A number in the title (series # doesn't count!) or a method of telling time in the title.
➜Series name counts as title (again excluding the series #)
➜Numbers that are spelled out are ok too for example Eighth Grave After Dark
➜First, Second, third, midnight, and the word time in the title are ok too.

Will score you an additional 20 points per book.

Good Luck & any questions about the mini challenge feel free to ask them here.

Stella ╰☆╮╰☆╮ (stellamatta) min 150 pgs for the mini too?

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) Stella, you'll use books that you're reading for the regular tasks for the mini challenge, too. So, if you have a book that works for the weekly tasks and it happens to fit the criteria for mini challenge (time telling method on cover or number in title, in this case), you get an extra 20 points added on to whatever your book earns already.

Stella ╰☆╮╰☆╮ (stellamatta) oh I thought I could use a different book uff I haven't so many green books

Katherine (katkattrinn) | 760 comments Can number be in the series, but not #1, but actual word.
Vain (The Seven Deadly, #1) by Fisher Amelie (The Seven Deadly #1)

message 7: by Jenne (new)

Jenne (jennetheinstigator) | 7439 comments Yes Katherine that seven would be perfect :)

message 8: by ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (last edited Jun 10, 2015 12:08PM) (new)

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) So, title AND series name will work for this task?

Stella, for the Peter Pan green task, it only has to be "something green on the cover", not a fully green cover. Jenne said that as long as you can see the color/colored item without having to blow up the cover, it will work.

message 9: by Jenne (new)

Jenne (jennetheinstigator) | 7439 comments Yes Teresa, just can't use a series's # that would be a give me lol.

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) Ha!! That would be insane to see how many points people could rack up from series numbers.

message 11: by Susan A (last edited Jun 10, 2015 12:57PM) (new)

Susan A | 2091 comments The Bruise-Black Sky (More Heat Than the Sun, #5) by John Wiltshire . Picture or words count? So a sun on the cover or the word sun in the title or series title works? Even if the series title is not visible on the cover?

Not a good example. The series title is visible.

message 12: by Katherine (new)

Katherine (katkattrinn) | 760 comments If you have a book where and number and some of these things then you get 40 points or just 20 ?

Can count words Alpha & Omega , because alpha is the firs letter in Greek's alphabet.

Yes if the title/series has a method of telling time it'll count. I'll edit that :)

Only 20 even if it fits the mini in more than one way.

I'm gonna say no to alpha and omega.

message 15: by Susan A (new)

Susan A | 2091 comments I think this one is no -- number on cover, not in title
The Eskimo Slugger by Brad Boney

Fourth and Long -- numbers like this okay first, second, third etc?

message 16: by Jenne (new)

Jenne (jennetheinstigator) | 7439 comments Yeah no on the jersey. And let me explain why, lots of time you get text in a cover like #1 on NY times list and it's a pain hunting that done lol.

Numbers spelled out like fourth and long are perfectly fine. First second third will be ok too.

message 17: by Susan A (new)

Susan A | 2091 comments Thanks!

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) Oh cool, I was going to ask if Thirds would be acceptable, as in Blood & Thunder, which is part of the "Thirds" series, and it looks like it is.

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) Have a question about the "Wednesday Task" (as I'm calling it for now) for these next 2 weeks. I didn't want to ask in its thread so that the thread could stay clean for task announcements...

I know that you probably had actual colors on the cover in mind for that task, but out of curiosity, would you accept the words on the cover (like say, in the title), as well? Like True Blue by David Baldacci True Blue for the Cinderella task or Read Pink The Friday Night Knitting Club by Kate Jacobs Read Pink The Friday Night Knitting Club for Sleeping Beauty, etc.? My thinking was, the words are "something on the cover", haha. But, i understand if the answer is no. I just thought about it while trying to think of books to read for that.

edit: Of course both examples have the actual colors on the cover! But I just did a random search for titles with those color words in them.

Okay, a better example of my question:
Riders of the Purple Sage Riders of the Purple Sage by Zane Grey
Would that work for Ariel's task? It has the word "Purple" in the title, thus showing "on the cover", but the color purple itself is not anywhere on the title. It was hard to find a book with a color in the title that didn't have the same color on the cover!

Again, I understand completely if that was not your intention for this task!

Thanks!

message 20: by Jenne (last edited Jun 10, 2015 08:38PM) (new)

Jenne (jennetheinstigator) | 7439 comments Lol Teresa, yes that will be fine. I'll edit it and let everyone know too :)'

Edit this response: No the color being part of the name of the title will not work. We've got a few that are already on the team name bonus so I'd rather keep it separate.

message 21: by Juliana (new)

Juliana Rodrigues (julianamfrodrigues) | 182 comments Jenne, a small setting sun still count as a method of telling time?

The cover is Foundation's Edge (Foundation, #4) by Isaac Asimov Foundation's Edge

The image isn't good, but on the real book the sun is more distinguishable.

If the title is done in a pink color (word is SNOW) - that will work if I understand you correctly - yes?

Ummm - I thought we were reading 2 books in the 2 week period. One for task and one for mini challenge?

message 24: by Jenne (new)

Jenne (jennetheinstigator) | 7439 comments M dawg you read as many as you'd like to/can!

This style of game is very different than SS/SSS where you have a time limit and one book a call. In this one the more you read the more you score. That's why teams have people that read 6 books a week, 1 book a week and everything in between.

If pink is your color, you'd get to count it towards the task and you'd get TN points for snow in the title.

Ok - got it - will make it easier as I haven't been able to find a pink that works with the mini and has other points I looked for as well :)

Skandia (sfgirl) | 435 comments Scarlet Moon A Retelling of "Little Red Riding Hood" (Once Upon a Time) by Debbie Viguié

Is this good for yellow?

message 29: by Jenne (new)

Jenne (jennetheinstigator) | 7439 comments Yep :)

message 30: by Logan (new)

Logan (loganturner) | 995 comments Jenne, if the number is embedded in the series title is that approved or not?

For example, Daughter of the Forest is the first in the "Sevenwaters" series. Does that count?

message 31: by Jenne (new)

Jenne (jennetheinstigator) | 7439 comments Logan that works since seven is actually the title of the series and not just whatever # in the series.

Megan midnight will work :)

message 32: by Joyce (new)

Joyce (eternity21) | 918 comments Timeless (Parasol Protectorate, #5) by Gail Carriger can you have the title of Time in the Once Upon A Time task?

message 33: by Jenne (new)

Jenne (jennetheinstigator) | 7439 comments Yeah that'll work :)

message 34: by Susan A (new)

Susan A | 2091 comments Embedded works? That title is "Timeless"

message 35: by Jenne (new)

Jenne (jennetheinstigator) | 7439 comments For this mini yeah. Most embedded words with this one still have to do with time sunlight is sun in essence, timeless is still about time.

message 36: by Susan A (new)

Susan A | 2091 comments Thanks

message 37: by Jenne (new)

Jenne (jennetheinstigator) | 7439 comments Yes it will :)

message 38: by [deleted user] (new)

Would Breadcrumbs by Anne Ursu work for purple?

message 39: by Jenne (new)

Jenne (jennetheinstigator) | 7439 comments Yep

message 40: by Joeera (new)

Joeera | 395 comments I will alao read this for the mini challenge

Midnight Embrace by Amanda Ashley

message 41: by Nichole (new)

Nichole | 1862 comments I see you approved Midnight. Does that mean that Moonlight, Dark, Night and words like that will work also?

And a picture of a moon, sun, or stars?

You may have answered this already. If so, I apologize. I'm trying to catch up with all the threads and it's a bit overwhelming in one go, LOL!

message 42: by Jenne (new)

Jenne (jennetheinstigator) | 7439 comments Moonlight yes, dark and night no
Sun moon stars on the cover are cool :)

message 43: by Nichole (new)

Nichole | 1862 comments Okay, thanks!

message 44: by Jenne (new)

Jenne (jennetheinstigator) | 7439 comments Sun, moon and stars are cool in the title/series name also.

message 45: by Susan A (last edited Jun 15, 2015 07:01AM) (new)

Susan A | 2091 comments Fairy Tale Flirts 2! 5 Romantic Short Stories

Does this work for number? Not the 2, as that indicates its position in the series, but the 5 that is part of the title

message 46: by Jenne (new)

Jenne (jennetheinstigator) | 7439 comments Yeah the 5 will make it :)

message 47: by Ora (new)

Ora (oeamis) Would you also accept once in a title or series?

Once Upon a Kiss or Once Upon a Time Travel

message 48: by Nichole (new)

Nichole | 1862 comments How about Cycle for telling time? Like the cycle of the moon or in my particular case, The Raven Cycle.

Too far? Haha!

message 49: by Jenne (new)

Jenne (jennetheinstigator) | 7439 comments Once will be ok since first second etc is.
Cycle gotta say no my dear.

message 50: by Ora (new)

Ora (oeamis) Yay! Thanks Jenne
