I agree, that's iffy...on the no side unless you have more...do they dress up as pirates at least?

message 53: by Susan A (new)

Susan A | 2091 comments No...I think it would have been a good addition ;)

message 54: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 1052 comments What if a character doesn't realize her father is really a step father until later in the series. I am re-listening to the Kate Daniels series and I'm on Book 3. Isn't the person who she considers her father really her step-father? Or am I making this up and totally crazy!

Susan A | 2091 comments soon to be ex-husband cleans out the joint bank and disappears...criminal of money?

message 56: by Jenne (new)

Jenne (jennetheinstigator) | 7439 comments Lol Leslie it's been a minute but her stepdad was her trainer more or less but she knew he was stepdad.

Right? Anyone? That's what I remember.

Jenne (jennetheinstigator) | 7439 comments Susan I'd consider that underhanded theft, it'll work.

Susan A | 2091 comments Peter Pan, Leader of the Lost Boys: Book involving a gang, team, a brotherhood etc.

Doess a pack/coven like in shifter/vampire books work?

message 59: by Jenne (new)

Jenne (jennetheinstigator) | 7439 comments They would :)

message 60: by Cait S (new)

Cait S For the tortured hero part, can it be sort of subjective torture? Like he's really struggling with people bullying him at school, but they aren't physically torturing him for example? Same with scars, can that be emotional/past trauma or just physical ones?

message 61: by Jenne (new)

Jenne (jennetheinstigator) | 7439 comments Those will work. There's listopias and shelves with the tortured hero theme. It's pretty vast :)

message 62: by Cait S (new)

Cait S It's insanely vast lol I have a 1.5k TBR list and I think 90% of it fits this week. Narrowing it down will be the real problem.

Thanks!

How about a squadron or other military subgrp? The names of them are escaping me right now...like a SEAL team, or maybe a task force for law enforcement?

message 64: by Susan A (new)

Susan A | 2091 comments Bed & Breakfast -- former baseball player, so not currently on a team

message 65: by Jenne (new)

Jenne (jennetheinstigator) | 7439 comments Seal team, military/cop type group would work.

Susan A | 2091 comments Pied Piper, Kidnapped/Missing Children:Books with missing person(s), kidnapping, ransom etc.

A murder mystery in which the bodies are unidentified -- meaning they are dealing with missing persons -- does this work?

message 67: by Jenne (new)

Jenne (jennetheinstigator) | 7439 comments I'm gonna say no to the bed and breakfast book. Even though he was on a former team he's not now. If the theme was harder I'd be a little more lenient but it's an easy one to fit.

message 68: by Jenne (new)

Jenne (jennetheinstigator) | 7439 comments Those would work. Anyone missing, even found dead would be ok.

“Larry's trying to blackmail Acton. That's it, right? The wallet is proof you were with him— or he's afraid it is. How much are you squeezing him for?”
“Five thousand pounds,” Larry said.

Sorry - -Peter Pan criminal task

LaurLa | 3913 comments For the latest task, does it matter how many times a book has been shelved based on the given theme? I have a book that's been shelved once as tortured soul. I'm not sure how accurate that is since I haven't read the book, but the MC is a rock star - aren't they all tortured souls? ;-D

I don't really care about this specific book, I'm really just asking to get some guidelines on how many times books should be shelved (vs being on a listopia). But if you say once is enough, them I'll go for it...

I am interested in the Jenne's answer on this one because you have a valid question on the shelving thing.

But I don't think rock star MCs should automatically qualify as a tortured soul. I guess it would depend on the specific book for me. Whatcha reading?

I was saying that about the rockstar sort of tongue-in-cheek. I'm sure some of them are happy - even before being written about in a romance novel where they get an HEA ;-P

The book in question is a Bella Andre Sullivans book - so I'm pretty leery about the tortured soul thing. But it did make me wonder about the guideline for shelved books.

LaurLa | 3913 comments Say No To Joe? (Visitation, North Carolina, #1) by Lori Foster

This book is a single guardian struggling to raise kids - she is their cousin and they are orphaned so has been named their legal guardian.

One of those Bella Sullivans is FREE. I snapped it up on kindle

message 80: by Jenne (new)

Jenne (jennetheinstigator) | 7439 comments For the tasks shelves are a good reference but not a guarantee. If that book has tons of ratings and only 1 person shelved it as tortured hero I'd be leery. There's not a set guideline for shelves for task books because the task needs to actually happen in the book.

The cousin raising the kids sounds like it should fit as long as she's having a hard time of it.

Thanks for the clarification. I'm very very leery. The Sullivan series is not known for its angst... I think for our team, for a lot of books we might not really know the depth of soul torture until we read them. And, strangely, I'm okay with that.

message 82: by Jenne (new)

Jenne (jennetheinstigator) | 7439 comments This is part of why I tried to group everyone together by genre as best I could. That way everyone can recommend, ask, etc when it comes to the books people pick =]
A lot easier when your teamie has read one you're wondering about. It's been cool to see all of the teams bring their minds together like that.

Yes, he's her stepdad but she calls him her dad. But we don't have enough to make another 10 so it's not important anymore. Oh well!

Susan A | 2091 comments Peter Pan: Captain Hook ~ any book with a pirate or a thief/criminal qualifies.
(Clarification: must be a criminal of money, gold, jewels/jewelry, treasure and or gems)

Does a stole crystal ball work for this task?

message 88: by Jenne (new)

Jenne (jennetheinstigator) | 7439 comments If it was actually made from crystal yes. If it's a fortune tellers crystal ball no they're only glass (yes I had to ask Siri that lol)

Juliana Rodrigues (julianamfrodrigues) | 182 comments For the new tasks...

Rapunzel, Given away at birth: A character would need to be adopted or adopting a child. This could be by another relative or non related person.

Would a character that is know to have being adopted as a baby works, even if she is an adult now and her stepparents aren't alive anymore?

Anita Reads | 436 comments Hi

About the task with a book with a single mother. I'm wondering if it's ok if the character is a single mother in the beginning, but then gets married later in the book?

In The White Queen (The Cousins' War, #1) by Philippa Gregory the MC is a widower with 2 sons, but it doesn't take long for King Edward to take an interest in her and marrying her.

You are fine. She was a widower at a point in the book. this one works for your task.

message 94: by Sam (new)

Sam (theliteraryhooker) How big of a part does the task have to play in the book? Like for the Snow White one, does it have to be a major plot point or just mentioned?

And what's the line between assassination/political murder and just plain old murder? LOL I ask because I have a book that might fit (it's a short story in the collection I'm reading) but I'm not sure. The character is a therapist who kills off the "bad influences" in her patients' lives and makes it look like an accident/robbery/suicide, but not for money or at the patient's request...

I may be overthinking this LOL.

message 95: by Jenne (new)

Jenne (jennetheinstigator) | 7439 comments Lol I guess the difference would be premeditated or planned murder.

Crime of passion, accidental murder I'd say no. The queen plotted Snow White's death and hired the huntsman to bring her heart back in a box.

Sounds like the book you're reading would work.

message 96: by Sam (new)

Sam (theliteraryhooker) Thanks! Sorry for the crazy post haha!

message 97: by Emma (M) (new)

Emma (M) For the Cinderella task this week of Rags to Riches. I have just finished the second book in a trilogy Golden Son, where he went from being lower class and poor in the first book to high class and wealthy. In this book he is still high class but still considers where he really came from as his home and who he really is. He goes home to see his mum during the course of the book - will this count?
