It's been nine months since the last forum pick, so I was thinking it was time for another. Although the selection process was a bit messed up last time, we managed to vote in one of the best loved picks in VF history, Magic Bites.

I was thinking that this time we could have people add and vote up their favorites on the Suggested Reads for Vaginal Fantasy Listopia. The advantages to this are:

1. There wouldn't be any duplicates to split votes.
2. You can add any book you like.
3. You can vote for multiple books (up to 100).

After a few weeks, The number 1 and 2 (unread and electronically available) titles then become the main and alt for the month. Or we could do a second round and put the top ten into a closed poll. What do you think?

Alicia I agree it is time, I think using the Listopia and I think the second round in a closed poll.

Malaraa | 335 comments The limited second round sounds better. And folks, only 8 votes separate numbers 1 through 25 right now! The listopia is an excellent resource for finding new reads. Check it out and vote!

I'm a fan of a second round regardless of how nominations happen. One of the other issues with the write-in polls is the sheer number of options dilutes the results. Voting once to narrow the field and voting a second time to choose gives those who nominate/vote for books that end up not being popular the chance to choose which more popular book they'd like to read.

My one concern with Listopia would be that a lot of users don't use Listopia and it might not be an accurate representation. Alternatively, we could set up a write-in poll and then take the top 5-10 books from that poll and do the second closed poll.

I'd be willing to do the legwork on the polls if that's a direction we want to go.

I personally prefer the two step selection. The major problems will be getting casual members to vote twice, the added time a second round would take, and the inevitable confusion it would cause. Also, with a poll, you are limited to one write-in, whereas with a Listopia you can vote up several of your favorites. It's partly a personal preference, but by using the Listopia, we leave behind a great list of recommended reads, while a poll will be forgotten.

I vote for 2 step! And I'm very excited about this. : )

Linnea (robotmaria) | 81 comments Doing it in 2 steps sounds fine to me. There are however more than one book on the list we have already read. Is there anyway to remove them?

The primary function of the list is to serve as a source for recommendations, so removing books from it would defeat its purpose. Nor is it practical as everyone who added a particular book would have to remove it themselves. It's a simple enough matter to skip over the ones that have already been picked.

Oh, ok. I misunderstood the purpose of the list (maybe make it more clear in the list description?). Not sure I want to use it at all then, but I'll vote in any kind of poll. :)

I used that list because it already existed and had a fair number of titles on it that were suggested in the forums. I felt that making a new list just for the poll would have been redundant and confusing. As it stands, this idea is just a suggestion. If it went ahead, I could edit the list's description.

If the list is used as a way to choose the next monthly pick then you don't need to change description, since that is the way I currently interpret it. If, however, the list is supposed to be another, plain old recommendations list (including books we've already read) then I think you need to change the description to make that clear. Personally, I would like to have two different lists with the two different purposes (since I want to make use of one, but not the other). But if we go with the 2-steps-method then the poll will ultimately be the what decides the pick and I'm all down with that.

Malaraa | 335 comments The main problem there lies in the background functionality of the listopia code. I love the concept of them, but the nature of people and the internet means you'll always have someone adding things that have already been read. Even if a book was unread when added, you can't remove it after it's picked and read unless all individuals go back and remove it. Unless they ever decide to give list creators more control over editing them, it's impossible to have a list of only potentials.

The best benefit of the list, I think, is that you don't have to pick just one book, as in a poll, so it lets things that are strong second or third choices of many people perform well. That's another thing goodreads could do, since they don't seem to want to change the lists, is offer a multi-answer poll option. But this is all really theory anyway, because in the end, it's about the 4 ladies we watch generously sharing their club with all of us. If they toss us a month where it's time for a forum vote, great, but until then we're just kinda tossing possibilities around. Unless someone wants to organize a not-so-local mini group around working through the books on the list, just for fun. That could be neat.

GREAT SEAN! Thanks! I'll send a memo out to the group to vote and we'll pick the top 2 for reading next month? At least the top one. THANKS!
