Alli (akwinot) Okay so, I'm in love with Harry Dresden. He was my first touch of Urban Fantasy and I loved it. Many years ago, I wouldn't have. Since starting his books I've read some others as well (I'm on White Knight). I've started the Peter Grant series (Rivers of London) while in Ireland, also read Patricia Briggs' Moon Called and Kelley Armstrong's Dime Store Magic. I just bought Dead Witch Walking and Odd Thomas, and I know I have a LOT of books to read as it is but any other recommendations I want to make a list of and start collecting them.

So list away!

I'm looking for urban fantasy. Not so much on the paranormal romance side but if there's romance that's ok. I won't complain too much. (But my fiancé is also gonna read these eventually and possibly his 14 year old brother if I recommend it to him)

I also have American Gods in paperback from Ireland as well as the second or third Iron Druid chronicles from Dublin but Neverwhere is on my TBR list.

I have this weird thing where I want to read Urban fantasy's from across the nation so if you could post the state/location too. That would be great.

Lindsey (ucdlindsey) You're off to a great start, there are so many great uf series to recommend, where do I begin? ;)

Kate Daniels series, a must read Magic Bites (Kate Daniels, #1) by Ilona Andrews - Set in Atlanta I think

October Daye series, fae are the only paranormal species in these Rosemary and Rue (October Daye #1) by Seanan McGuire - Set in San Francisco, California

Kara Gillian series, featuring a demon summoner cop Mark of the Demon (Kara Gillian, #1) by Diana Rowland - Set in Louisiana I think

Charlie Madigan series, lesser known but great The Better Part of Darkness (Charlie Madigan, #1) by Kelly Gay

Cassie Palmer series Touch the Dark (Cassandra Palmer, #1) by Karen Chance

Alex Craft series Grave Witch (Alex Craft, #1) by Kalayna Price

Watch series Night Watch (Watch, #1) by Sergei Lukyanenko - set in Moscow

There are certainly other good ones as well, but these are some of my favorites. For location, wasn't sure if you meant where the books are set? Truthfully in some cases i don't remember the setting, but all are urban.

Sallie Griffin (salliebelle) I second the Alex craft series and you should try Keri Arthur's dark angels series and continue reading Kelly Armstrong and Patricia Briggs books!

Felix OK,
your taste for books is excellent :P but there are a lot of things to recommend so ill make a short description to each of them.
Alex Verus Fated (Alex Verus, #1) by Benedict Jacka
Alex Verus is a diviner; a mage that can see futures as a tree of decisions everyone makes. There are lots of action and as far as I have come (book 3) no romance.
Compared to Harry Dresden he "feels" weaker and the whole concept of magic is a little bit more strange in this book but he is very good at taking on things above his weight class.
Generation V Generation V (Generation V, #1) by M.L. Brennan
The story is about a "young"(23) vampire that slowly develops his abilities but is able to "feel" compared to the rest of his family. There is very little magic in here but its very good Urban Fantasy. I don't like the sparkling vampires and in this series you will be pleasantly surprised.
Libriomancer Libriomancer (Magic Ex Libris, #1) by Jim C. Hines
Holy shit the idea of magic in this book is so freaking awesome. The protagonist starts from a similar situation to Harry Dresden in the first book (demoted and under parole).
Sadly only two books so far in this series but this "story-shake" of all the other UF is worth your time.
Felix Castor The Devil You Know (Felix Castor, #1) by Mike Carey
Its more like a detective story but with fantasy.
Ghosts, lots of ghosts in here, don't let them scare you :P
Oh and a bloodthirsty succubus somewhere too.
Sandman Slim Sandman Slim (Sandman Slim, #1) by Richard Kadrey
Our protagonist escapes from hell after being thrown don there by his old "friends". Now he's looking for vengeance.
I'm sure you can guess from this description ho that's going to work. But be careful the MC does not value anything life related high
Hellequin Chronicles Crimes Against Magic (Hellequin Chronicles, #1) by Steve McHugh
Hard to say something about it without spoiling it for you.
But one of my absolutely favorite type of scenes is in there; some big mouth werewolf gets beaten to pulp and no "admireing the big string werewolf alpha"(sorry but I really can't stand them or there pack-system/life/whatever)
Give it a try but it is similar to Sandman slim with not the kind and heartwarming sort of protagonist.

If you want more please say so but there are in my opinion the best and most similar to Harry Dresden.
If I'm looking for books from that direction I search https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/5....
If you find really good things in there somewhere else with a male lead please give me a PM :)

PS:
Not sure if it fits your taste but have a go with Monster Hunter International Monster Hunter International (MHI, #1) by Larry Correia
You will follow Owen a long trail to find out about his past his future and whom he will share it with.
A lot of weapons and weapons talk (I'm not a huge fan of that) but it can be ignored considering the quality of the rest of the book.
Sadly only very little magic but a metric exa ton(10^15) of monsters.

Alli (akwinot) Thank you guys! I still want more! My list is never going to end and I want it like that. :)

message 6: by Eric Cheung (new)

Eric Cheung | 2 comments My book was rated quite positively on Kirkus! Check it out, if you're into action and humor, that is.

Kings of Fortune by Eric Cheung

Portland Book Review gave it 4 out of 5. "If someone asked me to describe Kings of Fortune in one word, it’d be a simple answer: Fun. The novel is filled to the brim with friendly banter amongst friends, intriguing supernatural elements, and pages upon pages of fight scenes."

Kirkus Review said, "Cheung’s prose is reminiscent of a comic book: short, punchy sentences propel exciting moments of action and complement his amusing, pun-filled dialogue."

Thank you!
