I was wondering if you have an especific way of starting a book, or how it al starts, is it an idea and then you create the characters? or do you thing about cool characters and then you create their story?

Thalia Maidique | 17 comments Hi, Rachel! Was writing your first career choice, or was it something that came later on down the road? Was it easy for you to begin your career as a writer? Also, some authors tend to not read while writing because it could influence how they write a particular scene, is this something you believe in as well or do you call it a load of hogwash?
Anyway, love your books! Please share your thoughts. <3

What genre of books do you like to read? Do you limit yourself to only the genre that you write yourself?

Rachel Brookes (rachelbrookes) | 57 comments Betul wrote: "Do you (re)read your own books?"

Hey Betul,
I actually don't. The amount of times i read it during the writing process and then editing, gives me a lifetime of reads haha.
However, if i am writing a story that has interconnecting characters, i will do a reread to make sure i get the characters backstory correct :)

Hi Irma,
I really enjoy reading contemporary romance and erotica books. My favourite authors and books are in these genres. I am a sucker for any kind of romance though so i am definitely trying to expand into other genres that have a romance edge to them :) I will read any book if the blurb really grabs my attention!

Rachel Brookes (rachelbrookes) | 57 comments Andie wrote: "Hi, Rachel :)

Hi Andie,
Hmmm interesting rituals or habits..... I always have to have some form of background noise while i write, whether its music, the television or sitting in a cafe and having chatter around me. I hardly ever plot and every book I've written, i have written the epilogue within the first week of starting a new book. I tend to write backwards, but it's what works for me :)

Rachel Brookes (rachelbrookes) | 57 comments Danny wrote: "Hi Rachel, what are you most inspired by when writing ?"

The ability to get to the happily-ever-after is what i love, even though i put my characters through many obstacles until they get there. I am inspired to write stories that are emotive, a little different and that will leave the reader feeling warm and happy. Being able to provide an escape for myself while i write is amazing, being able to give the reader an escape is phenomenal.

Nicola (nikki-lou) | 2115 comments Hi Rachel

What made you decide to set stories in America instead of Australia? Isn't it more challenging writing about a different country then home? Love you call flip flops thongs haha but im in UK so many aussieisms are the same as British like lift not elevator , I love seeing them in the Breathe series and how you seem to bring a bit of Australia to your work even though they are living in America. Have you spent a lot of time in the states to enable you do that so well ?

thank you :)

Rachel Brookes (rachelbrookes) | 57 comments Michelle wrote: "What are some of your favorite NA reads or authors?"

My favourite authors are Abbi Glines, Kendall Ryan, Kristen Ashley and Christina Lauren. They have the ability to draw me so far into their words that i get completely lost for hours on end.

Rachel Brookes (rachelbrookes) | 57 comments LeAnn wrote: "Hi Rachel! What is your favorite thing to do when you aren't writing?"

I love reading, photography, baking delicious cupcakes and hanging out with my gorgeous nieces and nephews. Another favourite thing is to catch up on all the sleep i tend to lose during deadlines haha.

Rachel Brookes (rachelbrookes) | 57 comments Betty wrote: "When did you start writing?"

I have always written in some capacity. I remember writing stories for my dad when i was younger and typing up stories on his type writer. When i was in high school, i wrote song lyrics and poetry. I started writing seriously three years ago and that story was Just Breathe. I haven't looked back since :)

Usually the characters come to me first. Savannah from The Breathe Series came to me first and then Eden from The Crawford Brothers. Usually i do a character profile, i work out their background before the story hits me. Once i know the characters, i find its easier to work out their story. I don't tend to plot because the characters tend to take over and all my plot points are invalid! I write very stubborn characters who don't like being told what to do haha

I have always had a love for writing, but about four years ago, i really started thinking about it seriously and three years ago is when i first started writing. When i first started, i had absolutely no clue what i was doing, even today, i still learn something new every day. Having a great support network behind me has been beneficial to me and its definitely helped get me where i am today.

I still read while i am writing. If i don't read another person's work, my brain won't shut off and therefore i would never sleep. Even if its just reading for 30 minutes at a night, it helps immensely. I don't think reading influences my way of writing, i have a pretty clear idea of scenes in my head. If anything, its music that influences me the most, whether its a lyric, a tempo or feeling a song brings over me.

I am a full time author however away from the writer world, i love photography, baking, reading and doing house renovations. In two weeks i am heading to the US for 5 weeks and that's just the beginning of the trips that i have planned.

Oh this is a good question but a tough one!!!

I'd probably chose Ashlyn from Be My Temptation. She is sassy, funny, and she is a fashion stylist so she would have an awesome wardrobe that i could borrow from haha. She is also hilarious when she is drunk so it would be quite amusing.

I remember reading Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire and falling in love with the genre and then i read my first Abbi Glines book and i was hooked. It was after that, that i realised that maybe there was a place for my stories to sit, a genre that they would be accepted. It was after that, that i really started thinking seriously about it :)
