"I can teach you to burn," Professor Jaller began, his flaming eyes flickering over the students.
"You can burn short and burn bright, or you can smolder for years rather than explode in a split second. The last batch had a lot of exploders. Lots of potential, plenty of power, but they flickered out because they burned everything up too quickly. The slower you burn, the longer the fire lasts, dear children. Do not rush ahead to where there is no fuel laid or you will burn yourself out."
The class had become silent as the temperature in the room became uncomfortably hot.
"Fire is deadly. Fire is powerful. Fire is useful, and fire separates us from the lesser animals. But it is also self-destructive. It is greedy and feeds on its fuel quickly, burning itself out. Over the course of your studies, you will have to think like fire, act like fire, and even be fire, according to some psychologists. Remember something, though: If you surrender yourself wholly to the blaze, you will achieve greater power than anyone in the world currently has. You will rival the gods themselves. However, the reason that I said "currently" is because everyone who tried it is now dead. In allowing yourself to become fire fully, you will have no thought of stopping, of slowing, of prolonging your existence. You will be the best, but then you will be ash.
"For this reason, I insist that, when you allow yourself to think like fire, you keep something human withing you. Thoughts of family, friends, and swimming, alien concepts to fire, have been helpful. Earth and water have trouble entering the mindset of their elements. We have trouble leaving. Remember that. Every time you use your gift, you become more like fire. But fire destroys everything it touches, and only fools think themselves the exception."
Jaller glanced at the students to ensure that his message had got across.
"With that, we will be smelting horseshoes today. There are smithies along the walls with coals and wood. Anyone who can't light a fire without a match will be immediately expelled."
