Blurb:

I’m the fat Puerto Rican–Polish girl who doesn’t feel like she belongs in her skin, or anywhere else for that matter. I’ve always been too much and yet not enough.

Sugar Legowski-Gracia wasn’t always fat, but fat is what she is now at age seventeen. Not as fat as her mama, who is so big she hasn’t gotten out of bed in months. Not as heavy as her brother, Skunk, who has more meanness in him than fat, which is saying something. But she’s large enough to be the object of ridicule wherever she is: at the grocery store, walking down the street, at school. Sugar’s life is dictated by taking care of Mama in their run-down home—cooking, shopping, and, well, eating. A lot of eating, which Sugar hates as much as she loves.

When Sugar meets Even (not Evan—his nearly illiterate father misspelled his name on the birth certificate), she has the new experience of someone seeing her and not her body. As their unlikely friendship builds, Sugar allows herself to think about the future for the first time, a future not weighed down by her body or her mother.

Soon Sugar will have to decide whether to become the girl that Even helps her see within herself or to sink into the darkness of the skin-deep role her family and her life have created for her.

It doesn't work for me as it's NOT a pirate and no castle...but hey, we will just use it for page numbers :D

We will need a palate cleanser so let's shoot for next week?

I started 5 mins ago. Sugar Legowski-Gracia breaks my heart and makes me want to lose weight now too.
She said she only feels shame and she is a classic example of emotional eating.

why do people feel the need to tell Fat people that they are fat? As if fat people don't already know that they are fat.

I like that term "dia-obesity".

Hilary's party: So Sugar is worried if Hilary invited or her hilary's mom...
Made me think of my kid.

So my daughter had her 8th Birthday party and a few days after I realize she didn't invite this girl name Connie that I really liked. I have gone on school trips and she always sticks close to me but don't seem to mesh with the other kids.

I asked Sweet Pea, why didn't you invite Connie to your party?
She said "well, some of the other kids think she's weird and I don't want them not to like me, so I thought it would be better if Connie didn't come. But I like her."
Well, I didn't reply because I was trying to gather my thoughts, my daughter guiltily replied "why don't we invite her to a play date?"

So it's okay to be Connie' friend in secret, but not so publicly. This is 2nd GRADE!!! Connie just came from Nigeria and there are some social awkwardness issues. In dressing and speech, her mannerism are very English. I know this because we are also Nigerian, and Nigeria was an English colony.

I mentioned this to my husband and he said Next year, we will just get a class list and invite the whole class, that way we will not allow her to exclude anyone.

i don't know if that's the answer either because there are kids who are clearly not "friends" with Sweet Pea. So I don't know but I would like to raise a child who can be public friends with an "unwanted".

anyway, this book is making me think on those things

high school kids taking care of parents instead of the other way around is really wrong :(

Sugar's mom treats her like a servant. And no one tends to her emotionally. This is really sad.

I understand why Brittany wants to go to the party regardless of Sugar's dilemma. No one wants to excluded from the party of the year just because your bestie is persona non grata

K~Terror (k-terror) | 4537 comments I'm just now starting this so only a few minutes into it..

Peer pressure and wanting to fit in is so hard. My kids are older so wasn't sure when it started. Where are the handbooks for how to handle these issues correctly?? For being the melting pot, you would think we would be better about accepting people's differences...

My youngest is going to be a freshman in HS and tends to get herself into the middle of a lot of issues by standing up for kids getting picked on... I can't tell her it's not the right thing to do, but I do worry about her being in the middle of some situations that have the potential to turn volatile.

I know. I shouldn't expect her to save the world, because I don't remember being that person either. So it's not fair to expect an 8 year old to stand up for her.

How the HELL is Sugar's mom caling her fat when Sugar's mom is over 500 lbs? She can't even get out of the house and make her doctor's appointment as she can't fit in the Honda.

What the hell? I want to smack her and Skunk.

K~Terror (k-terror) | 4537 comments I know... I'm reading this one on the heels of Marrow which is another one about a dysfunctional family. (Crazy Moms!) It's so sad.

I guess mom lashes out - because she's unhappy and she can.. Sugar is an easy target for everyone, poor girl.

Everything seems to relate back to being fat or food... How would you NOT eat if that's all that you are thinking about or all anyone talks about to you... Plus, like you said, she's taking care of her mom and their household... even if she had a desire to pick up a hobby or do something different - I'm not sure how she would be able to do that without having some serious changes occur at home..

Breaks my heart how she thinks people don't like her at school or at home and that it's her fault... She doesn't have anyone there to tell her it's a reflection of their shortcoming, not hers...

Why is her mother soooo mean and bitter to Sugar, the one person who helps her?

K~Terror (k-terror) | 4537 comments I know...

They say that a lot of times siblings of abusive parents form closer ties.. yet that didn't happen here either.. Probably because Sugar is taking 90% of the abuse? No one, except Even, is there looking out or wanting to protect Sugar... I just don't get it.

I do wonder what happened to the mom growing up.. although we know she was supposedly a cheerleader and not fat... Makes me wonder if it's depression or maybe some other mental illness? (Something "contagious" that affected Skunk too... grr...)

She had problems with her pregnancy and with Sugar's dad. So pregnancy and complications and depression. Plus subsequent health problems has made her cruel.

I can't believe it, man! can you? Her home condition was deplorable. But I think the message at the heart of the story was she needed to lose weight but it was emotional baggage and bad coping skills.

Her brothers were cruel...as was her mom, I don't care what life did to her, she did not protect and put her kids first. She may not know how to, but still.

K~Terror (k-terror) | 4537 comments Ya, mom was NUTS! And from what we heard from when she was with their dad, she was mean way back then too. Loved it when Fat Henry & Sugar let mean-mama and skunk know what was happening from here on out. They were at a loss... What? No Sugar to wait on us, belittle and kick around? Huh? Wait...? What's going on????

I guess the weight issue was tied in with her emotional well-being... Kind of went hand in hand... as she worked on making her life the way it needed to be, she was finding less need to eat when she wasn't hungry...

I just loved that she found the strength to go to the counselor. that was the first step. that's awesome.

I think this is a book everyone should read. We have got to stop fat shaming
