Do you like to purchase and own your books or borrow them from the library?

Personally I like to own the book..but since I don't have all the money and space in the world for all the books.. I like to borrow them from the library.

My only huge problem with the library is that I will have no books available... and then ALL of my books come in.

Right now for example.. 3 physical books, 2 ebooks, and 2 audio books all came in at the same time. Man every bit of my extra time this week is going to be filled with finishing all of my books.

message 3: by Nicole (new)

Nicole I used to just buy them off Amazon, but not all books are available here in Australia & it does start to get a bit pricey after a while. Now my first stop is the library & if I can't find it there I will go to Amazon & then if that fails, the book store!

message 4: by Brandy (new)

Brandy | 2535 comments I am terrible I love audible! I buy so many books on there. I am so backlogged on my audio books. However I have gotten better and check the library first now. But if it is an author I love then mandatory purchase.

I used to be pretty good about limiting my book purchases then I bought my kindle and now I have a huge backlog on there too. I just need more hours in the day.

I am a little weird about physical books, I don't like to borrow them. Well except from my mother

message 5: by Brie (new)

Brie | 569 comments I'm a little of both. I like to start at the library, actual book or ebook and if I really love it and want to read it again and pass it on to everyone I know, then I buy!

message 6: by Kirstin (new)

Kirstin | 86 comments I prefer to own books. I want to have enough to fill a room one day :) But I still like to go to the library because I run into all kinds of books that I usually wouldn't in a book store.

When I have to wait for forever for my books I eventually give in and buy the book.

message 8: by Hayley (new)

Hayley Stewart (haybop) | 15 comments I like to buy my own. Mainly because the time between me buying the book & actually getting round to reading it is usually a bit longer than libraries allow ;) If I ever manage to get to the point where I'd be reading as soon as I get them I wouldn't mind borrowing a few instead :)

message 9: by Trina (new)

Trina (duskvamp) I love to buy books, by the bag or box, bunches at a time so I have LOTS of options on what to read and can re-read or pass them along to the ones I'm recommending them to so they have no excuse as to why they can't read it lol

I agree! But yet I torture myself all the time when I borrow books.

message 12: by Hannah (new)

Hannah I dint normally buy books new, I use charity shops and car boots and I love using the library!

message 13: by Hannah (new)

Hannah * don't

message 14: by Trina (new)

Trina (duskvamp) Old book are better, you can smell it in the paper, the age and history.

message 15: by Rebecca M. (new)

Rebecca M. | 27 comments I prefer to borrow, mainly to save money, but I end up buying a lot due to my hometown library being terribly small.

Maggie the Muskoka Library Mouse (mcurry1990) I like to do both. I don't tend to borrow books from friends though, just from the library.

message 17: by Jen (new)

Jen Borrow from the library unless it is a trilogy (or longer) that we want to own for our son to read someday or if the book is so long/complex that I need to write in it to understand it.

message 18: by Esther (new)

Esther Jackson (ejjackson) Buy

message 19: by Lori (new)

Lori Wainio (lgwainio) Borrow - audiobooks from Libby!

message 20: by A. (new)

A. Hall (tenover10) | 5 comments I like to borrow unfamiliar author's books or series I'm trying for the first time. Books are fricking expensive, especially if they're good ones. So, I like the luxury of the library or kindle Unlimited to try out a series or new author I am not sure is worth the dollars or not. If I fall in love, I splurge for those books. Like, the cost of a book isn't necessarily a problem, just the reliability of the books and whether they have reread value.

I remember as a teenager, I'd go to book shops both second hand and new books, and buy a crap ton of books that I liked the summary of on the back. Then I'd have at least half of those that didn't end up being good books to read but I was stuck with them because I bought them. I much prefer being cautious and researching now.

Until I get a bigger place and I get my cozy book nook, I absolutely cannot buy any more books. I have no room any more.

message 22: by Vera (new)

Vera | 3 comments Buy i like to have my own book.

message 23: by Marnee (new)

Marnee (marnee1369) I am a mix between buying and borrowing and with both I overdo it a bit or I forget about my bought books trying to keep up with the return dates on the borrowed ones. I not only borrow from libraries but also have a loan a book borrow a book system with some close friends. My partner has learnt that the best gift he can give me is books and pays close attention to which ones I keep gravitating back to when in shops that have books. So I like to mix between borrow and buy.

I love that idea! The borrow/loan system with friends.

I have one friend who gives me her books that she finishes. I need to start returning the favor, but I've been reading a ton of ebooks lately so I haven't finished my bought books to even give her.

message 25: by Marnee (new)

Marnee (marnee1369) My friend and I started sharing library books so one of use would borrow it read and than lend to the other before returning it cause were we live it takes forever for the library to get books in from other libraries in the state. Than it progressed into our own books and even now that she has moved away when she is up we return and trade books and keep in touch through snap chat about how we are going with the book. Its actually really good cause we have polar opposite tastes so when we find a book that seems interesting to us and we think the other will find some interest it is really exciting to not only to read what my friend thought would interest me but to hear about what her thoughts on the books ive leant her are cause there not her usual thing

I've been getting so frustrated with my library lately. It takes me months to get a newer book. I just started this book swap with one of my friends and I think I'm just going to start buying books.

message 27: by Jelissa (new)

Jelissa (j_nicole18) | 4 comments I enjoy buying my own books. Even though it can get pricey.

message 28: by Lavender (new)

Lavender (breakingthecyclepodcast) when I get Barnes and noble gift cards I use the entire thing on books and whatever is left over a CD they are so expensive I usually thrift books so it is rare I check out one from the library

message 29: by Libby (new)

Libby | 10 comments I love the treasure hunt of finding my books at the library and I have discovered several new authors and experimented with different genres since it is a low risk way to try something different. If a book is extremely meaningful I may purchase it for my shelf to have for reference.

It is a great idea. I rejoined the library after years and have discovered many new authors in different genres since I retired, like Joseph Connelly, Cecelia Aherne and Iain Baine. I could never afford to keep up with my reading challenge without our libraries. We must support them.

I couldn't agree more. I've got three library cards myself, but I borrow a lot from the e-libraries they support instead of physically going in. I need to do that more.

message 33: by Rivka (new)

Rivka | 4 comments Big time borrower. I love the library and I hate spending money. I only buy books I love, already read and plan to reread and random summer contemporaries like Sarah dessen and Morgan matson.

message 34: by Ann (last edited Dec 31, 2019 04:16AM) (new)

Ann | 36 comments I buy some books new - usually books in a series that I love. I always go to 4 library book sales every year and find great deals. I buy books from Goodwill occasionally.
I borrow books, ebooks, and audio books from 2 different library systems.
I have been a member of Kindle Unlimited for several years.
I recently got offered a deal from Amazon Audible and have a 3 month membership.

I have bookcases all over my house! My phone and iPad are full of books too.

Libby | 10 comments Most of my books I borrow from the library but occasionally I will find one that I want to really ponder, takes notes in the margins, underline passage so I will purchase it

Axel Marvah (westspiderking0270) | 11 comments I buy most of my books at thrift stores and yard sales. But if there is a specific book im looking for, i borrow from my local library

Macarena (followed that rabbit) (xcrazydiamondx) I'd love to own all those books I've enjoyed reading, but I can't afford to buy them all and neither do I have enough space (plus it depends on our works to stay in a certain place or move to another), so I borrow from the local library (nowadays I borrow more digital copies from the app), buy some, and request e-arcs from NetGalley.

Do you get a lot off NetGalley? I've always considered signing up and entering for e-arcs but I guess I assumed I've never win any haha

message 41: by Christine (new)

Christine (mrschristine) It depends on how excited I am about the book. I'll try to borrow but if the library wait is a good while I'll cave and buy it.

Macarena (followed that rabbit) (xcrazydiamondx) Sara wrote: "Do you get a lot off NetGalley? I've always considered signing up and entering for e-arcs but I guess I assumed I've never win any haha

You should totally try it. It took me awhile to sign up, because I thought I would never get any copy, but I was wrong. At first, it's a good idea to review the books labeled as "read now", so you can get badges for the amount of reviews you write. Then, you may start "requesting" books, because you'll have more chances to get the copy due to your amount of reviews.
I don't have a blog to review books, neither do I have a "bookstagram" account, just goodreads, and still can get e-arcs, of course it's hard for me to get a copy of Isabel Allende's new book or Patricia Briggs', but I've got the opportunity to discover awesome auhtors/books.
Warning: It's totally addictive 🙈.

Melanie | 5 comments I love the library and really only buy a book after I read it and know I’ll want to read it again. Or like others have said it the library doesn’t have it or the wait it too long, I’ll go buy it. I feel l like I can’t claim a book to be one of my favorites if I don’t own it.

sam ;) (samreadssss) I really love buying the book and prefer it because I love to highlight and annotate. For that reason, i don't like borrowing or checking out books from libraries.

alice | 9 comments I love owning books but hate buying a book that I end up not liking, so I just borrow it from the library and if I end up liking it I’ll buy it. BUY FROM LOCAL BOOK STORES (if u don’t have access to one it’s fine but always favor them over places like barns and noble and Amazon)

message 48: by King Kimi (new)

King Kimi (kimicocoapuff) | 8 comments I do both. Often if I borrow from the library and really enjoy the book, I will buy it.
