Elspeth Hall (elspeth_grace) | 141 comments Hi my daughter is currently obsesed by the police and has been insisting for a few months now that she wants to be a police lady when she grows up . I know at 4 she has plenty of time to change her mind but she is getting some strange ideas about just what being a policeman is.... its got to the stage where she is refusing to eat except in the car because police men ONLY eat in the police car. She wont listen to us and the health visitor is coming round next week but from our phone conversation she's as stumped as i am.....
long story short does anyone know of any kids books featuring policemen sort of like fireman sam or postman pat but for the police force? plenty of chasing robers but also a few pages where they are at home/the station eating breakfast or some such.

Fjóla (fjolarun) | 260 comments I'm aware of these: Bug Patrol, Policeman Small A Day at the Police Station, Police Officers on Patrol. Bug Patrol is pretty awesome, it's illustrated by the amazing Cece Bell who got a Newbury Honor this year for her auto biographical El Deafo. I suppose you could point out to your daughter that police officers work shifts, and that when they are not on shift they can eat wherever their mother says to, and that they only ever eat coffee and donuts in the car if they are on a specific mission. I'd actually be curious to hear something about the mission she thinks she is on ...

Jenny | 722 comments Here are a few you could try:
Officer Buckle and Gloria
Sherman Crunchley
Police: Hurrying! Helping! Saving!
Police Cat

I wonder if there is a way you could tour a local police station or have a police officer talk about his/her job? (Even if it was just a neighbor that is a police officer that could just talk to your daughter at your home.) I know there are also short nonfiction books about different careers for kids that might help.

Ditto the suggestion for non-fiction - your library should have a whole section on different careers, books for all different ages with photos etc.

The other suggestions are good, too.

Your daughter sounds like a delightful challenge - enjoy!

Elspeth Hall (elspeth_grace) | 141 comments Thanks every one for the suggestions. We quite regularly "talk" to police but she is so shy around them that the questions usually come out after the constable has gone.... you certainly get strange looks when you approach with a list of questions supposedly from the child that is doing her best to hide up your jumper. I'm sure they all think I'm a loony by now lol.
All our local police stations are closed to the public. doors are locked and you talk to them via a bright yellow telephone on the front door. :-(
This all started when she saw a police man shopping and then later we spotted him eating his lunch in the car park... fortunately he was tucking into a ham salad sandwich so even if the car is starting to fill with crumbs at least she isn't insisting on doughnuts or something equally unhealthy.
Non fiction might work if it shows them coming in/leaving in civies. (civilian clothing)

Pity about the yellow telephone system.
Thanks for sharing your story - I never had a daughter and my sons are grown so I love a chance to smile over others' children.

Is your daughter in kindergarten or pre school? If she is, perhpas you could approach the caregivers about having police officer or some police officers come and give a talk.

These might work, but I have not read them and thus do not know if there is any information regarding a police officer's home life and his/her eating habits.

A Day at the Police Station

Keeping You Safe: A Book about Police Officers

Let's Meet a Police Officer

A Visit to the Police Station

Elspeth Hall (elspeth_grace) | 141 comments Having an officer visit preschool is an idea I'll sugest that on friday... ta gundula will add them to the list for next weeks library visit. It's amazing how few books our library has, the only one on the system was police officer on patrol. thou they did suggest cops and robers by the Ahlbergs.

I think that might be the best bet, and it would also be of interst to all the children. Hope you find some good books.
