My theory is, that the feelings Bella felt for Jake, was the feelings that bound Nessie to him...
A sort of pre-pregnancy destiny between Nessie and Jake...

Me neither. She would never have chosen Jacob.

Jacob and Edward are rivals for Bella’s love. Of course Jacob never stood a chance, but that doesn’t mean it’s any less of a triangle.

So true. And funny. :D

It's just a whole bunch of mindless obsession. I'm not too concerned.

That's true... IF Edward is around. Love between two people depends on both of them, so if Edward would have chosen to stay away from Bella, she probably would have gone for Jake. One love is different from another, but that doesn't mean they're not both real! So I think it is a love triangle with three very different sides.

Even if Edward never returned, I think that Bella and Jacob would have only ever been best friends.

Better yet, an isosceles triangle.

readi
That's exactly how I felt when reading this series. I mean I can understand that Jacob likes Bella, and that she doesn't really like him as more than a friend back. I feel like the "love triangle" was a tiny bit forced. Because I knew right from the first book that Bella was going to choose Edward. There was no question to me who she was going to choose.
Hehe, I always thought calling it a love triangle was silly. Because all the sides of a triangle are connected, that means that at some point, Jacob would be in love with Edward, or visa versa (sorry if I spelled that wrong xD). So, theoretically, it's a love ARROW, hence that Bella is at the only point and the only way Jacob and Edward are connected is via the Bella Intersection. Otherwise, if it remains a triangle, there's a whole story we're missing! Fleeting moments in the forest, secret meetings at the border ectectetc...
OH! TOO LATE! Sssssssssssssssssssssssssssss!

There are different types of love triangles, see: Triang Relations.
Even though some are missing a side it's still classified as a love triangle apparently.

Neither Edward nor Jacob were appealing in any shape or form...

Really? For me, when I see love triangles, I can't immediately decide which is the one. For example, at the end of Pandemonium, I wasn't sure about who I wanted. In the Twilight series though, I didn't really see it as a "true" love triangle because I immediately felt that Edward was the one who Bella would choose.

I can understand what you are saying, but many books are not as such and they are called love triangles. For instance, "The Hunger Games." I think we all knew Katniss was going to end up with(SPOILER) Peeta, but it is still known as a love triangle, is it not? And how about the Matched Trilogy- we all knew (SPOILER) that Cassia was going to choose Ky, but it was still referred to as a love triangle.
Also, In twilight, (SPOILER) Bella DOES fall in love with Jacob and they DO kiss, so to me, it is a love triangle.

Haha, for all of those, I wasn't totally sure (besides with Twilight). (maybe i'm just dense. ;))
