Veronica (veraj121) | 300 comments I just started reading Under the Dome two days ago and I cannot put it down. I was wondering is there anyone here who just started reading this book?

message 552: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I read this one when it first came out, and I couldn't put it down either. I loved it. Very fast paced and awesome.

message 553: by Kit★ (new)

Kit★ (xkittyxlzt) | 612 comments I couldn't put it down either when it first came out, though I do have to say that a lot of people did make me madder than I usually get at SK characters. Especially Big Jim... oh man, I wanted to crawl into the book and gouge his eyes out with a spoon, he made me soooo mad, just so all out, uncontrollably bad. Grrr. It's probably due for a re-read here one of these days... :)

Veronica (veraj121) | 300 comments Its been a long time since I read any of his books. The last book I read was Dreamcatcher and Hearts in Atlantis.

message 555: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Kit, I most definitely agree... These characters made me SO ANGRY! Well, some of them.

And actually, as angry as the main baddies made me, the baddy enablers made me even more mad. Stupid. LOL

Veronica, I can never go very long without reading a King book. LOL In fact, I just took out Blockade Billy from the library. (I'd have bought it but I'm trying to save money to move far, far away from cold, pothole-ridden PA. LOL)

message 556: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (veraj121) | 300 comments I usually do not go long either. I feel like the prodigal daughter ( not son). Now, I am back home.

So far I am at the point where Rusty's daughter had a seizure of some sort ( the same Angie had before her demise). I know most people do not like Jim Rennie. But I think Junior so far is worse.

message 557: by Kit★ (new)

Kit★ (xkittyxlzt) | 612 comments Junior was wicked, but he mainly just grossed me out lol :o

Just wait. You haven't seen the worst of Big Jim yet.

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Kit★ wrote: "Junior was wicked, but he mainly just grossed me out lol :o"

LOL yeah... I think he was creepier than dad though. I don't want to give too much away, but whew... I felt like I was watching a speeding train approaching a fully packed stalled schoolbus on the tracks with him. LOL

message 560: by Thomas (new)

Thomas (TomStone) | 3 comments The scary thing for me is that Big Jim and Junior are similar to some of my local school board and city council members.

Nice. That's comforting, isn't it? LOL

Kit★ (xkittyxlzt) | 612 comments Thomas wrote: "The scary thing for me is that Big Jim and Junior are similar to some of my local school board and city council members."

I hear ya! There are all kinds of people in "power" positions in my county that remind me of him.

message 563: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (veraj121) | 300 comments I was telling my 11 yr old about Under the Dome last night and she was said, that sounds like the Simpson's movie.I went to his site and he was talked about how he came up with the idea of the book. He was also told this idea was in The Simpson's movie.

message 564: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (veraj121) | 300 comments I know many people think the characters in Under the Dome are too stupid to be real. But I think Stephen King captured people's actions under abnormal times. People act like this during ordinary times. All you have to do is turn to the news. Better yet, work on my job. Its insane here. LOL

message 565: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) That's true... people are borderline irrational normally - throw them into an unknown where they feel like they are threatened, and irrationality takes over.

message 566: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (bookgoddess1969) | 665 comments There's a huge difference, though, in how cartoon characters would handle something and how "real" people would handle them. I was also under the impression that he had been working on this idea for years now.

message 567: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) The Simpsons movie is really nothing at all like the book. The only similarity is the dome itself.

message 568: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (bookgoddess1969) | 665 comments Exactly, Becky.

LOL! I know that. I just thought it was funny when she said that.

Dustin Kathy wrote: "There's a huge difference, though, in how cartoon characters would handle something and how "real" people would handle them. I was also under the impression that he had been working on this idea f..."

Hi, Kathy!

Your impression is correct. King originally started a roughdraft in '78, or something...didn't work out. A few years later he gave it another try, with the same result. The third attempt worked, obviously!

message 571: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (bookgoddess1969) | 665 comments It definitely worked! That's one of my faves! And that's what I had heard.....Uncle Stevie would never steal someone's idea! :)

message 572: by Kit★ (last edited Apr 19, 2011 11:32AM) (new)

Kit★ (xkittyxlzt) | 612 comments On his website a pdf file of the first few pages of his second attempt, called "The Cannibals" is available. I saved it to my computer to read, it was pretty interesting, wish he would've finished that story too, b/c it was way different than UtD, the only really same concept was that there were people trapped in one location. Here's the link: http://www.stephenking.com/library/un... The link to download is at the bottom of the page.

message 573: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) An apartment building, right?

message 574: by Dustin (new)

Dustin Yeah, he talks about the "evolution" of UTD in books' Afterward, which is quite fascinating, IMO.

message 575: by Kit★ (new)

Kit★ (xkittyxlzt) | 612 comments Yep it was in an apartment building. It was good, I wanted to read more than what was available lol.

message 576: by Dustin (new)

Dustin I never did read any of The Cannibals excerpt..

message 577: by Kit★ (new)

Kit★ (xkittyxlzt) | 612 comments Dustin wrote: "I never did read any of The Cannibals excerpt.."

You should read it! It's neat, especially because it's a copy of the original, the old-style typewriting, cross-outs and corrections... I thought it was cool, seeing something unpolished and un-perfected.

message 578: by Dustin (new)

Dustin Thank you, Kit. That does sound neat, and cool, but I don't think I could read it, knowing it's an unfinished product.

message 579: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (bookgoddess1969) | 665 comments I always have problems w/ parts of books like that....or even when you can get sample chapters ahead of time. It always seemed like such a tease and I want more!

message 580: by Dustin (new)

Dustin Like The Plant..

message 581: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (bookgoddess1969) | 665 comments Exactly! I still haven't read that....and I bought each segment and printed it out on my computer. lol

message 582: by Dustin (new)

Dustin I'll probably never read it, either..

message 583: by Kit★ (new)

Kit★ (xkittyxlzt) | 612 comments Yea, I do agree it's sad to not be able to read the whole thing, that's the downfall :( I never read The Plant either.

message 584: by Bondama (new)

Bondama (kerensa) | 868 comments I did make the mistake of reading "The Plant" - and I've got to say, it was interesting for one, and only one, reason. This was the first time I actually saw Stephen King at a loss for words -- he got lost in the insignificant details of the story, and it deflated like a balloon. Someday, I'd like him to go back and re-write it, simply because there was a germ of an excellent plot in all that mess.

message 585: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (veraj121) | 300 comments I wonder if a movie or series will eventually be made. And if so, I hope they do not spare any expense.

message 586: by Bondama (new)

Bondama (kerensa) | 868 comments Truth be told, Veronica, I think that "The Plant" would make a TERRIBLE movie - and for that reason, I pray that Uncle Stevie doesn't need $$ anytime soon!!

message 587: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (veraj121) | 300 comments Ooops. I meant Under the Dome. Sorry about that

message 588: by Bondama (new)

Bondama (kerensa) | 868 comments No problem --- I was a little confused about your wanting to see a film of an unfinished book!! :)

Courtney | 293 comments Veronica wrote: "I wonder if a movie or series will eventually be made. And if so, I hope they do not spare any expense."

Apparently it's going to be a miniseries, and Steven Spielberg is working with Stephen King on it, but there hasn't been any recent news on it.

I did see that. And I also saw HBO may want to do the series. But as you said there hasn't been anything said about it recently.

The was rumors one of the cast may be John Goodman for Jim Rennie.I can see James Gandolfini playing that role

message 591: by Dustin (new)

Dustin Hi, Veronica!

There actually is suppose to be an Under the Dome mini-series...but I haven't heard any news since around the novels' publication....

message 592: by Daniel (new)

Daniel Gonçalves (danielgoncalves) I´m on page 100 (seconde king book i ever read) Im absolutely delighted with it. The writting is so incredible and it hooks you from the beggining

message 593: by Dustin (new)

Dustin Yes, it sure does, Daniel! I'm glad you're enjoying it.

message 594: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (veraj121) | 300 comments It is very good. I am almost half way through the book. Incredible.

message 595: by Diana (new)

Diana (dianat327) | 6 comments After hearing so many favorable reviews on here about Under the Dome, I picked it up this weekend. Read over 600 pages Saturday and Sunday and can't wait until I can finish it.

I'm concerned I'm not going to like the ending though! I don't know the ending but many times great books have bad endings.

message 596: by Gatorman (new)

Gatorman | 561 comments The ending seems to be hit or miss with people. Either you like it or you don't. I liked it myself.

message 597: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (bookgoddess1969) | 665 comments I definitely liked it! No complaints here!

message 598: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Gatorman wrote: "The ending seems to be hit or miss with people. Either you like it or you don't. I liked it myself."

That's true of a lot of King's books...

message 599: by Dustin (new)

Dustin I also liked the ending, but I can understand why some readers wouldn't appreciate it.

message 600: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (veraj121) | 300 comments I agree with those that say either you liked the ending or you didn't. I didn't like the ending only because I came out feeling a sense a hoplessness. I don't want to say why because it will spoil the ending. However, if this were real, I would be traumatized and ruined for life. LOL. Don't get me wrong, it was well written and the ending was great. But I was a little messed up. I guess that's how you know you have read a good book. You come out feeling something. And Stephen King does that well.
