Kandice | 4387 comments Oh, Chris. I am so sorry. I've had kidney stones 3 times, so I understand. I hope you feel better. Do you have to "carry the strainer"? (I hated that!)

message 252: by Kandice (new)

Kandice | 4387 comments Read it, Rob! It's very, very good.

message 253: by Bondama (new)

Bondama (kerensa) | 868 comments In support of Martin: How many of you have taken "English Lit" in college and studied the great "British" writers - James Joyce, Samuel Becket, W.B. Yeats, Jonathan Swift, George Bernard Shaw, or Oscar Wilde? -- All Irish, every last one of them. (With that lovely Irish Sea between them and England.

I had a strainer until I passed it. Truth is, while that hurt more than anything, it was over after a day and a half. It's this muscle spasm thing after effects that won't go away. But the percocet makes it feel better....thanks for the get well wishes..

Rob, I bet the paperback will even be one that you'll need a shopping cart to get up to the front counter with.

I'll be heading to the post office in a little bit. According to the tracking information, my amazon order has arrived....

I really do hope it's better soon. As far as Dome goes, I can't wait to hear what you think. You're in for a treat!:D

message 257: by Mary (new)

Mary (madamefifi) My copy arrived yesterday! I'm about halfway through another book right now but I am not loving it. The temptation to abandon it and start UTD is overwhelming.

message 258: by Apokripos (new)

Apokripos (apokalypse) | 54 comments I'm kinda curious what those deck of cards with all the UTD characters looks like... any care posting some pics here? Just to alleviate the envy I'm feeling right now... Lolz!

Martin Maher (martin87) | 72 comments Bondama: Exactly Bondama. We may be a small country, but we have some very talented people living on this little island. (Believe it or not, I`m somehow related [not too closely:] to George Bernard Shaw! I`m not sure how exactly, but my Granny was someway related to him)

Chris: In relation to your kidney stones; garlic is excellent for them. Boil some cloves of garlic in a saucepan of water & drink the water after letting it steep for a while. It does wonders! (My dad had them once!)

Sorry for going off topic, so back to BOOKS!

message 260: by Lonnie (last edited Nov 13, 2009 09:54AM) (new)

Lonnie received mine from WM online and everything looks good. Wow... 3 pounds and almost 11 ounces (I just had to weigh it!) that's one heavy book.

I had to look to see if it was his longest and it wasn't. It has it beat by 100 pages or so.

I will NOT be purchasing my book from Wal-Mart.

Lonnie Rob wrote: "Notice that now everyone makes sure to emphasize that they bought their book from Wal-Mart...."

I fessed up from the getgo that I bought mine from WM. I was the one who hoped it hadn't been Walmartyred. Granted, had I known there was going to be a price war on the book I would have waited a couple of days and bought it from Amazon for the same price.

message 263: by Kandice (new)

Kandice | 4387 comments I bought one from Wal-Mart and one from Amazon. I'm half guity, although, I guess guilty is one of those all or nothing situations.

I bought mine on amazon.com for $9. That's when I still thought I was a responsible consumer that was seeing a good deal on a pre-order.

Incidentally, I was in Walmart the day it released to get medicine, and saw UtD on the shelf for $23 and change. I guess that 9 dollar price war was for the pre-orders rather than the book in general.

Nope. I had the Wal-Mart one sent to someone else, but I saw what they looked like in the store, and they are exactly alike.

Lonnie good to hear. If I win the lottery tomorrow night I am going back out to buy the limited edition one that comes w/ the cards ;)

I think it is definite that it will be read for the December book read.
I love the look of this book!!!!

Tom Mueller | 305 comments POSSIBLE SPOILER

Reference in UTD to another book
p. 387? SK makes reference to Joyce Carol Oates' "Because It Is Bitter, and Because It Is My Heart", referring to one of the main characters.
Oates' nonvel examines racial and class hatred, just as UTD does.
The more I read King's work, the more in awe of him I become.

POSSIBLE SPOILER ABOVEBecause It Is Bitter, and Because It Is My Heart

message 272: by Lori (new)

Lori (barfield) Well if there was a price war over UTD i sure as hell missed it. We went to WM yesterday, to drop off some prescriptions, and i went to find UTD. It is 25.00 bucks. Going to ask for it for Christmas. We are both out of work right now, & sense his heart attack they added 4 more meds. Thank goodness for WM's 4.00 dollar scripts, he only has 7.

Lori; I'm pretty sure the $10 UTD was online only. However, if you are still wanting to pick it up w/out ordering it online go to Borders.com and sign up for their specials. I got a 50% coupon today for one of 20 books and UTD was on it.

I don't know if the link will work or not but here it is

message 274: by Lori (last edited Nov 17, 2009 07:19AM) (new)

Lori (barfield) THANK YOU LONNIE! :) I'll try it.

I printed the coupon & it's good for the 17th, 18th, & the 19th. I don't have a Borders or a Waldenbooks where i live. We have Barnes & Noble & Books A Million. But i'm going on line to find one close by Greensboro or Chapel Hill. Now i only hope they have a copy. I'll lrt you know. And THANKS again!

Very happily.
oh, BTW, that was a copy SIGNED by Uncle Stevie!!

Mary (madamefifi) Lori, completely OT but I used to live in Chapel Hill! Small world, isn't it? I worked at Memorial Hospital while putting the ex through grad school at UNC.

message 277: by Martin (new)

Martin Maher (martin87) | 72 comments Just got `Under the dome`! I got the paperback edition, which is 880 pages. I hope to start in a couple of days time, once I finish with the book I`m reading at the moment.

Tom Mueller | 305 comments I don't have an opinion of this guy yet, but there is a Randall in UTD. In SK's universe, that can only mean one thing.

message 279: by Lori (new)

Lori (barfield) Hey Lonnie, I went to Greensboro yestreday to Borders and got my book. The lady ask me where i got my coupon from, i told her off the net. She said i couldn't use it with out a Borders card so we almost had a problem. She had me to fill out some paper with my email address on it. It was 37.72 but with that coupon it turned into 18.86. THANKS :)

You don't have to rub our noses in it Tom. LOL :) That is really way cool!

They say it's a small world and it looks like it is. Hi there Mary! That's where we took my honey to when he had his heart attack. It's a very good hospital.

Glad it worked out for you! I don't think we have a Border's card but I really can't remember all the free memberships I have. I know that I never pay for them though and I get a coupon from Border's about once a month, although I seldom use it.

message 283: by Dung Beetle (new)

Dung Beetle (dungbeetle) | 79 comments I think Mr. King’s books fall into three main categories:
1. Books that are among the best I’ve ever read, they blow my mind and cause me to worship the ground he walks on.
2. Books that are embarrassingly bad, they sit on my shelves gathering dust and I don’t want to let people borrow them in case it turns them off King forever.
3. Some other stuff he wrote.
I have to say I think Under the Dome is a category three. I took a day off work to read it and enjoyed myself thoroughly, but it wasn’t mindblowing.

message 284: by Lori (new)

Lori (barfield) Hey Dung Beetle, you mean to say you read the whole book in a day? My daughter ask me last night when i planed to start reading it. I told her the first of the year, so i can see how long it takes me. I read slow, but damn your fast, if your done in one day. I don't plan to read any reviews on UTD till i finish the book.

Sarah | 72 comments Having just joined the group, I was hoping to get in on your December book read, but I only do Kindle books nowadays, and UTD isn't going to be available until December 24th! I went ahead and pre-ordered it. I'm hoping I'll forget about that between now and then. That way, when it automatically downloads to my Kindle and shows up on my home screen, it'll be a nice Christmas surprise!

Thanks Angie! Whoa...that was quick! Certainly is something to look forward to!
Hey Lori...UTD is a really quick read believe it or not. Of course I have to use a pillow to prop it up! And btw, I don't live so far from you either...NC is just about the best place to live!
Sorry to get off topic, but I have to ask you Sarah...I've been wanting a Kindle ever since they came out, but worried about the expense and whether I'd really use it. If you use it exclusively you must like it alot, huh?

Best $ I ever spent. Plus, it's more than paid for itself in freebies from Amazon, even in just the few months I have had it (including one of the Sarah Langan books we talked about in the other thread!).

Although, I have to say, hearing everyone here talk about the ginormous UTD hardback gets me a little nostalgic. I love seeing all the pretty tomes lined up on my shelves. (Until I have to move, that is.)

Oh, and BTW, I'm proud to say I haven't shopped at WalMart in 12 years!

message 288: by Tom (new)

Tom Mueller | 305 comments Speaking of WM, I must say I was rather disappointed to see that SK did a signing in at least one WM. Come on Uncle Steve! Please show support to the Indies.

message 289: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 72 comments Yeah! And the second link Chris posted in the "New Dark Tower Book" thread was to a SK interview. One of the questions someone asked him was weather he shops at WM. He said yes.

=/

It makes me sad, but I still love him!

Surprised though, given his and Tabitha's left leanings.

message 291: by [deleted user] (new)

I read recently on Amazon about "Under the Dome" where there is a discussion claiming that the book is missing pages. Anybody else having that problem? Please respond cuz that would totally suck. o_O?

message 292: by Tom (new)

Tom Mueller | 305 comments I have read of different numbers of pages; Simon and Schuster has it at 1088 pages.
http://books.simonandschuster.com/Und....
Some have it at 1038 pages (possibly a typo).
My copy is 1074 pages.

message 294: by Tom (new)

Tom Mueller | 305 comments SPOILER
The theme of an omniscient presence is the foundation for Stephen King's 1985 short story, _Word Processor of the Gods_. Part way through UTD I started sensing that King was dealing with the same basic premise (ants under a magnifying glass). The story in its original form may be hard to find, but well worth hunting for; it was first published in Playboy in about 1985.
A different form of an all powerful presence - Leatherhead children - becomes the foundation in King's latest; _Under the Dome_.
SPOILER ABOVE

Word processor of the Gods

message 295: by Bonita (new)

Bonita (NMBonita) I've read that story. Isn't Word Processor of the Gods in Skeleton Crew?

message 296: by Dung Beetle (last edited Nov 23, 2009 07:15AM) (new)

Dung Beetle (dungbeetle) | 79 comments Lori, I didn’t get through UTD in a single day. I tried, though…even called in “sick” to work. I guess you can see where my priorities lie! :) After that day of solid reading, it took me maybe another hour, hour and a half.

message 297: by Tom (new)

Tom Mueller | 305 comments According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skeleton..., it is indeed in that collection.

Lori (barfield) OMG your fast! I did that only once with The Dark Half. I was on 2nd at the time. Started around 12am or so, & read all night. I got through about 6pm or so the next day. I didn't make it to work either. But look at the difference in the size of these books. I'm older now so i still think it's going to take me a while to read UTD. But my hat's off to you!
