Alan Toner | 69 comments James Herbert is, without doubt, my all time favourite horror author. Right from when I first read his brilliant debut novel, The Rats, back in Sept 1975, I was hooked on the great man.

I've been a Herbert fan since I first read The Dark.

message 3: by Alan (new)

Alan Toner | 69 comments Good for you. I love The Dark, and in fact regard this book as the last of the really great traditional Herbert shockers. His subsequent books became less explicit and more paranormal, and were kind of hit or miss for me (e.g. loved Ghosts of Sleath, hated Ash etc.). The Rats and The Fog are my two all time favourite Herbert horror novels, and I would really love him to recreate this style - the style that first sprang him to fame and fortune, and make him a BIG name in the horror lit genre - one day. I live in hope, anyway.

message 5: by Alan (new)

Alan Toner | 69 comments Which thread??

message 6: by Mark (new)

Mark Burns (TheFailedPhilosopher) | 196 comments There's another Authors>James Herbert thread with almost one hundred posts.

message 7: by Alan (new)

Alan Toner | 69 comments Oh, right. I didn't realise that.

message 8: by Chris (new)

Chris (flahorrorwriter) | 2844 comments Yeah, just noticed this dupe topic, but that's cool...and started Sleath and digging it...as Jon stated, The Dark is my fav by him...

message 9: by Chris (new)

Chris (flahorrorwriter) | 2844 comments Yeah, I just got Lair and Domain at work, but since The Rats is out of print, I just ordered a used copy on bn.com, should be here next week...woohoo!

message 10: by Chris (new)

Chris (flahorrorwriter) | 2844 comments Which bookstore? It is OOP at B&N but mostly due to the fact that perhaps the UK pub hasn't shipped any more to the states, who knows...and his pub has been reissuing his backlist so I fully intend to build my Herbert collection (had other books that somehow disappeared over the years...WTF)...

My copy of Domain was published by Signet. He also had books out with Harper, Jove and Onyx.

Last I saw, he was publishing with Tor.

message 12: by Chris (new)

Chris (flahorrorwriter) | 2844 comments Pan Macmillan is his current UK publisher, with Tor being who published Crickley Hall and Ash in the US. And Herbert's never published with Leisure.

message 13: by Jeff (new)

Jeff | 1131 comments The first book I read by Herbert was "The Fog" which I thought was incedible, followed by "The Dark", "The Survivor" which was done a few differnt times in movies, "The Rats", "Lair" and "The Haunted" which in film starred a really young Kate Beckinsdale and was done pretty well. I'd love to read "The Fog again since its been at least over 20yrs. Would love to see a film based on it too.

I think he's been with Tor since Nobody True.

Robert Kratky (bolorkay) | 342 comments I'm about to start the "Rats" trilogy (The Rats, Domain and Lair) I had a bit of a false start with "The Fog".

Will this trilogy be a better intro to James Herbert than "The Fog" seemed to be?

message 16: by Char (new)

Char | 17463 comments I'm about to start Haunted. I hope it's good. I decided on this one, but I had a really hard time.

Jeff | 1131 comments Charlene wrote: "I'm about to start Haunted. I hope it's good. I decided on this one, but I had a really hard time."

Haunted is very good, If you had read someof his earlier stuff you'll find a difference in the subject matter. Before he wrote about more physical things of horror, after those he decided to do ghost stories and he is quite good at that too.

Have you read any of his other novels Charlene?

message 18: by Todd (new)

Todd Russell (toddrussell) | 118 comments I read and enjoyed several Herbert books back in the 80s. Has been awhile. I should revisit his backlist and pick something I haven't read.

I haven't. But after a recent discussion somewhere here, I definitely think I will pick up The Rats. Do have any other suggestions, Jeff?

I do!

But no one ever asks me.... :(

Todd Russell (toddrussell) | 118 comments The Rats was a good read, Charlene. Also enjoyed The Fog (much better than the unrelated movie). I remember struggling to get into Fluke.

Kate | 3525 comments I really enjoyed The Spear by James Herbert , I read it many, many years ago but when I think of his work I always remember this book.

I liked Sepulchre, Moon, The Magic Cottage, Others, and The Dark.

Todd Russell (toddrussell) | 118 comments Already read Sepulcher and The Magic Cottage. Don't remember either of those fondly. I didn't read Moon, Others or The Dark yet and will check out one of those. Thanks Jon :)

My favorite book from him is "The Fog" it was also the first book that I read by him and after that book I was hooked. I then read "The Dark" another phenom book then "The Rats" teh sequels to that are "Lair" & "Domain" Those books alone comrpise a great horror gallery of James Herbert.

Chris (flahorrorwriter) | 2844 comments I really liked that one, Kyle...good stuff.

Bandit (lecturatoro) | 8821 comments Oh, that is so very sad. This year I was just starting to really get into his work. RIP, Mr. Herbert.

message 36: by Jeff (new)

Jeff | 1131 comments That is a real blow to the writing community. One of the better authors out there with hsi own brand of Horror. He will be sorely missed.

May He Rest In Peace.

message 37: by Philip (new)

Philip Hemplow | 31 comments That's a cruel blow. Always been a staunch fan of his. Very, very sad news.

RIP Mr Herbert.

message 38: by Char (new)

Char | 17463 comments I was just getting into his work too, thanks to Jon and others here at GR.
RIP.

message 39: by Julian (new)

Julian Lorr | 52 comments Such sad news. I remember saving up pocket money as a kid just so I could buy one of his books. He was the first horror writer I ever read and he was a tiny part of a lot of people after so many decades of stories. I am proud to have lived in his lifetime.

message 40: by Chris (new)

Chris (flahorrorwriter) | 2844 comments Just saw this and very sad news...just been getting back into reading his work again...damn...

message 41: by Chris (new)

Chris (flahorrorwriter) | 2844 comments I think a future HA readers group title should be JH novel...what do you all think? Jason, Tressa? Would be a very cool tribute to a horror legend...

Count me in.

message 43: by Chris (new)

Chris (flahorrorwriter) | 2844 comments Very cool, Julian. I remembering climbing a neighborhood oak and reading the opening chapter of The Dark and getting freaked out enough to climb down...

message 44: by [deleted user] (new)

I would be in for that too. I read my first earlier this year and planned to read more.

message 45: by Lou (new)

Lou (louhands32) I own and have read every one of JH's books from cover to cover. When I saw earlier that he had passed away I was gutted he was a great writer! RIP Mr Herbert.

message 46: by James (new)

James Everington | 66 comments Sad news. One of my first introductions to horror was The Rats - passed guiltily around the playground when we were far too young to be reading it...

RIP man.

message 47: by Chris (new)

Chris (flahorrorwriter) | 2844 comments My vote would be for The Dark...

message 48: by Chris (new)

Chris (flahorrorwriter) | 2844 comments I would be fine with that since I have yet to read it.

message 49: by Char (new)

Char | 17463 comments I would be good with a JH read too. I recently purchased The Dark and The Survivor. But I would be up for reading The Rats or The Fog also.

message 50: by [deleted user] (new)

Maybe The Rats? Because it was his first book. Seems appropriate. I'll read anything by him really though.
