Trisha I found the actual plot line to be very interesting, but there was too much information on the history of whaling, the anatomy of a whale, the different uses for a whale, etc... It just bogged down the novel and I felt like I was skimming through those parts to get back to the story itself.

Falina I just finished Moby Dick and I thought it was fantastic. I was definitely bored by a lot of the chapters that were peripheral to the main plot, but I ended up adopting a soft focus when I was reading these, pretty much skimming until I landed on things that caught my interest. I'm like you, andreafaythe...I ended up googling a lot of information on whaling in the nineteeth century, and I spent a good chunk of time reading up on white whales (which I didn't believe existed until I did the research). I ended up giving Moby Dick five stars not because it was consistently entertaining from start to finish but because the times that my interest was captured, I was absolutely enthralled. I thought the last hundred pages were amazing.
