Emili--I own a Nook and a Kindle. Plus about 5k books. What I prefer to read from depends on the day. I have arthritis in my hands and wrists and on the days when that's acting up, I HAVE to go the electronic route. Simply because it weights less than a book does. And lets face it--1k books in e-format take up a LOT less space than the same number in book form. And yes, I DO have about that number of books on my e-readers. Sigh, I am an addict, what can I say. But I refuse to attend any 12-step programs, since I figure there are a lot worse things I could be addicted to, ya know? :o)

I have ereaders on my iPad, iPod touch and iPhone, so I can have a book with me all the time without having to actually carry a bulky book.
I just love to read no matter what the form.

I'm also something of a Kindle junkie. I buy a new one each year. My family gets my hand-me-downs. I'm currently reading on a 7" Kindle Fire HD, with a Paperwhite as a back-up. My cat recently knocked my Fire off my desk and it went haywire. Amazon replaced it for me without even quibbling about it.
Yeah, I love my Kindle.

However, to be practical, books take up a lot of space. True, they're recyclable, but an e-reader saves a lot of trees in the long run.
IMHO

My house used to be filled with overladen shelves and teetering piles of books. Nice books are nice, but most popular press books are physicaaky equal to trash, especially paperbacks.
It's what's in the books that counts! And iPads, nooks, Kindles etc. hold thousands of books with minimal impact on the environment, and no additional impact on my book-choked house. I stopped buying print books because my license plate says "BOOKLVR" and print books were taking over my space. Plus, they are slooooowly becoming obsolete.
Taschen books are one of the few categories that actually should be in print. There is no need for me to have a print version of Stephen King, James Baldwin, or Maya Angelou. Their content, not their form, makes them worthwhile.

(Less paper wasted !)
Only downside is that I can't take the ipad to school. And for some reason - paper books make me connect much more to the characters.

As a writer myself, I'd also like to sing Kindle's praises. It's incredibly difficult to find agents or publishers prepared to take a risk on a new author these days. Kindle offers the opportunity to get your work out there and hopefully build up a following. Marketing and promoting your work is a very steep learning curve, but I'd urge anyone who feels they have a decent story to sell to give it a try

The new book smell is highly overrated. If you miss it so much, you can probably buy a new book smell spray somewhere.

That's why I think they should give you an ebook copy if you buy a physical copy. Makes sense.

Kimberly--that's what apps are for. I have both a Kindle AND a Nook device. Plus I have the apps for both downloaded to: 1) my phone, 2) my laptop 3) my SECOND laptop 4) my tablet and 5) my desktop. That way, even if something happens to the actual device, I still have all of them safely stored in a cloud out there in cyberland.

As much as I like using my Kindle, I much prefer paperback books. Though it comes in handy when I'm reading mature books. But a book has always been comfortable in my hands.

Plus I'm sort of wary of Amazon, since they seem to keep "recalling" books. IE: They vanish off your kindle mysteriously in the night, hehe.

You're so right about that! I decided to start using Nook and iBooks apps as often as possible. Even though I cannot resist Amazon's thousands of free books. Updated hourly, gah! But books do vanish in the Kindle app.

I'm blind as a bat. The white type on a black background in 18pt is the best thing that ever happened to me!

New books smell like chemicals and cheap paper, unless you're buying deluxe, leather bound, archival special editions. Even my antique books just smell kinda musty/dusty.
