lol, a LOT of us traditional types are addicted to the smell of old books. You'll find us creeping around the used bookstore, all shifty eyes and sniffing the book pages. Yup, don't ask.

♥¸.•*´Tanya`*•.¸♥ (tanya84) | 23 comments Both I prefer books but with being a fast reader I'm constantly starting/finishing books I'd never have the room to store all my books like I do with the kindle.

message 54: by Laura (new)

Laura | 5 comments My kindle! I love the ease of downloading what I want instead of having to order online and wait for it in the mail. Or...driving to the bookstore. I love my kindle HD and I also love watching a movie when I'm done reading. It's great dual entertainment! :)

message 55: by Ceej (new)

Ceej | 4 comments I have a nook but yes I love the feel of a book in my hands but for traveling, it saves room to use e-books! but if I have to buy the book to read it, I want a hard copy every time. If I could get a job in a book store I would go in debt! lol

message 56: by Toni (new)

Toni (tsteube) | 7 comments As easy as it is to roam around trying to read my nook, after a while it will tire my eyes from the black light. I honestly don't find very much pleasure in reading books on my nook. I am proud of my physical book collection and that is the one that I want everyone to see. Ha, in the Disney movie "Beauty and the Beast", all of the other girls wanted Prince Charming, while I wanted that library. So for me, its printed books all the way.

Oops, I forgot to tell ya! I collect old illustrated books, and old books on lettering design and architecture. They musty as hell, and you should here me squeeeeal when I find one a a used bookstore, thrift store, or library sale. Sqeeeeeeee! Used book stores--- which I love-- are the worst places to buy these; they charge premium prices. Nothing is mustier than the book section of a thrift shop, wher I get my best finds. These books have inherent value in the color plates, binding, illustrations and typography. I love books in their physical state, but a six dollar paperback to £25 hardback in just clutter. I also plan to sell my hundreds of grad school texts--choking my bookshelves. They gots to go, but many of them are beautifully printed and bound. Whoa, a pile just crashed to the floor, lol.

message 58: by ~Thena~ (new)

~Thena~ (athena-nadine) | 63 comments I have a Kindle, a NOOK, an iPad, a phone, and a laptop I can read on, as well as a library full of first printing hardcovers and paperbacks I've been buying for over 25 years. For books that I want to be sure to keep forever, I buy them in paper. For books that I don't much care about or am not sure I want to keep, I buy them in ebook. Sometimes I also buy ebooks I already own in paper and sometimes I buy paper books I already own in ebook. Just depends on the mood I'm in and whether I want to actually own the book and not just a license to read it.

I've been in IT since the 90s and know all too well how untrustworthy cloud storage and companies can be. Even with all of my ebooks backed up in multiple places there is a good chance that something will happen one day that will cause me to lose them or will make them unreadable. Ultimately, both formats serve their purposes for me.

In addition, I despise all the updates and cover changes that happen to ebooks. When I buy a book I want the cover I bought and not the one the publisher or author thinks I should have later. As far as I'm concerned, changing my ebook covers like that is no different than someone coming into my house and replacing my hardcovers with newer editions without my permission. It's just wrong.

message 60: by Scribble (new)

Scribble De Dibble (scribbledoutname) | 4 comments I like books but kindles are more convenient so neither for me, they're both good. I usually use my kindle because I've got more books on it though (it's easy to buy them, and a lot of the books I've got lying around my room are gifts from people/stuff I've impulse bought but didn't want to read THAT much, hehe).

message 61: by Julie (new)

Julie Blankenship (jblanken) | 12 comments I like kindle because I can do a phrase or word search, bookmark, highlight and because I have moved so many times and don't keep books I one place I tend to misplace paper books.

message 62: by Effie (new)

Effie Z (effiez) When it comes to books vs e-books, if you are a book-snuggling-chair-worm, you already know the answer.
The feel of the shifting pages brushing through your fingers is a definite high, and one you can't find an equivalent for.
If i ever had to buy a kindle or a nook or whatever other book-reading-gadget is out there, I would do it only for those books that just move me a little to read them and most probably never include them in my selves.
I'm a love-at-first-sight kinda a girl when it comes to books and i rarely change my mind.
So, my first choise will always be the feel a book can only provide.

message 63: by jaded (new)

jaded (jadedkitty423) Right now I prefer reading on my nook because I live in a small apartment with overflowing bookshelves. I don't think I'll ever abandon physical books because I love new book smell. :)

message 64: by Jacquel (new)

Jacquel (clairevioletthorpe) | 127 comments Kindle, since I can read the book using the text-to-speech reader.

message 65: by Lynn (new)

Lynn Reynolds (goodreadscomelylibrarysec) | 10 comments Even though I have a Kindle, Kindle Fire and a Pandigital (comparable to a Nook), I still prefer having a physical book in my hand. Don't need to be recharged and power outages don't affect them.

I've had a kindle for over 2 years and never had a book vanish. I actually belong to a kindle book club and they've never had any disappear either.

Oh, I love looking through thrift stores, you find so much good stuff! And yes, I paw through all of them and smell them. lol.

And Tracy, it doesn't happen a lot. But Amazon has done it before (with George Orwell's 1984) and just recently there was a big uproar over something else they did (something about sending out emails telling people to send their books back? Not clear on that one).

Not saying they do it all the time. Just saying I'm not happy with the idea that they have the ability.

I know it has happened, but it happens so rarely that its really just a moot point for me.

Amazon removed "1984" because the company who sold it didn't have the rights to, so Amazon had to delete all the illegal copies. It was the right thing to do.

message 70: by Aubrey (new)

Aubrey | 19 comments Kindle for me all the way. I got the kindle paperwhite for christmas and I definitely read way more now than I ever did - theres just so many options to get free books, books for cheap, love lendle, and the paperwhite is SUCH a great e-reader, with its e-ink display and the built in led light.

When people ask me if I would rather have a book in my hand, I unabashedly say no way. e-readers have opened up a lot of reading doors for me, so i'll never go back. Yeah, its not for everyone, but i super enjoy being able to read stuff thats by self published authors and using lendle to lend and borrow.

Yeah, and there was such huge backlash that it probably won't happen again. But then there's stuff like this in the news:

http://www.techdirt.com/articles/2012...

I'm not saying it happens all the time, I'm just saying it makes me uncomfortable that it does.

Plus I'm a traditionalist who loves the smell and feel of books in my hands, so normal books make more sense for me.

Mina Khan (spicebites) | 127 comments Hmm, I still prefer books...but when I'm travelling, I love my kindle.

message 73: by J.T. (new)

J.T. Bock (jtbock) | 40 comments I thought that I'd never read books on my iPad. Then I realized something totally cool: I could look up definitions of words at the touch of my finger and make notes on different scenes. I belong to a book club and whenever we discuss a book, I'm always frantically searching through my book to find the scene or my note. On my iPad within Kindle or iBooks, I can search on a term and it will take me to the page. Plus, it saves my notes, so I am prepared for our meeting. I still have hard copies of books (and will be reading those in the tub and on the beach), but the ebooks are so convenient now.

message 74: by Maddy (new)

Maddy Barone (maddybarone) | 74 comments Like a lot of us, I like both. My kindle makes it so easy to get a book anytime, anywhere. If I'm travelling for work and am dying to get the newest release RIGHT NOW, I can get it no matter where I am. I like that with the kindle I can get books that aren't available in paper, like Laurann Dohner's and Eve Langlais's series. They don't take up room on my limited books shelves. No one needs to know I'm reading a "smutty romance".

On the other hand, there are series that I started before I had an ereader. Since I had the first 5 of the Black Dagger Brotherhood series in paper, I'vee nbuy the others in paper too. But nowadays I buy the kindle version and wait for the book to go from hardback to paperback to buy them for my shelf.

I would prefer a book

message 76: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisamessegee) | 120 comments I love my Kindle, but I do have to mention that when I study nonfiction, I prefer a paper book. I like being able to leaf through the pages. That's something you can't do on a Kindle. And the illustrations in a book are superior to the illustrations in a Kindle.

Desiree M ~*~*~ LiveReadCollect (livereadcollect) | 119 comments The simple answer I prefer paper books over an e-reader.

However I do absolutely love my Kindle, especially when it comes to borrowing books from the library because about half of the books I want to read/borrow from there they only have it in ebook form. Also I find I usually read faster on my Kindle which is cool.

message 78: by Carolina (new)

Carolina Montague (cstewart) | 19 comments I like both but took a vow to only buy research books in paper. I have way too many books. My little cottage groans under the weight. My son got me a Kindle for Christmas in 2011 and I love how when I want a book it can appear through whispernet on my Kindle right after I order it. I know, I know. Saves gas/destroys Indie bookstores. I wish there was a way to save Indie bookstores.

message 79: by Lieke (new)

Lieke (vagasker) Actual books! I love the smell of them and I prefer to hold an actual book and to flip pages. It just feels more.. I don't know.. authentic? And I love how they look on my shelf :)

Buy ebooks AND paperbacks? Indie books are cheap! Also, you can donate books when you don't want them anymore. I have a great indie bookstore down the street from me and they love getting my leftover books :D

message 81: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie | 92 comments I love reading from my ipad it's so much easier than carrying my books around all day plus I can read whatever I feel like at that time even I still do have books and will buy them once in a while.

message 82: by Carolina (new)

Carolina Montague (cstewart) | 19 comments Sadly, my house can't take any more books, even after I recycle the non-keepers. Too many with author signatures from fellow RWA folks over the nearly 20 years I've been a member. Also too many research books and books I reviewed for ForeWord (before they went digital). I do what I can for the local indie stores by taking friends there.

message 83: by Valerie (new)

Valerie Sange (valeriedusange) | 7 comments I never, ever thought I would like ereading. I have a library of books, all my favorites over the years that I expect to reread someday--but sort of sadly, at this point it feels a little like holding on to cassette tapes or even 8-tracks.

I read a lot in bed, and leaning my iPad against a pillow with the light off, just flicking it with my finger to turn pages--am I that lazy, or is there something else about the experience that is so appealing? I still happily read books, usually from the library, but prefer ereading. To my great surprise.

message 84: by Delia (new)

Delia | 27 comments I enjoy both. Sometimes you just want to curl up with a nice paperback on the couch. Other times I enjoy the ease and quick buying ability of my kindle. I have even started enjoying audio books while I drive to work. My family thinks I may have a problem... LOL

message 85: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (dawnv) | 320 comments Hardcover books then kindle/nook and then paperback.

I will admit I love a hardcover book you feel a sense of progress as you flip through the pages. Typically it fits well in my hand and the letter size is perfect.

TheDistortedBliss Books for sure :) nothing is like holding a book in your hand!

message 87: by Janessa (new)

That's actually really true! I never thought of it that way, but I feel the same way after I'm done!

message 89: by Aurelila ♡ (new)

Aurelila ♡ (aurelila) I have books and my Kindle. I prefer my Kindle though. I like the ability to switch over to any book at any time instead of bringing like 2-3 with me everywhere when I can just have one device hold them all. :)

message 90: by Wendy (new)

Wendy coling ( trowbridge) (flossynipples) | 24 comments While I love my kindle and I can get books on it cheaper I do like my books in paper.
My kindle handy when I ain't got space for my book in my bag.
But I like smell of a new book.

So I guess it evens for me I like kindle and paper books, even Stevens I guess

message 91: by Christina (new)

Christina | 2 comments I prefer my e-readers because of the volume of books I read. I would have books piled to the ceilings. I've purchased and read over 350 books between my kindle and nook in a little over two years. (Last year I switched over completely to my kindle as amazon has a better selection of books in my opinion). I also LOVE that I can have all of my books with me all of the time (Kindle app on iPhone).

E-books are a lot cheaper as well. I definitely love the privacy using my kindle affords. No one needs to see the seriously steamy covers on some of my books! And I have become lazy. It's so much easier to prop up my kindle and not have the pages flipping back.

message 92: by Rosanna (new)

Rosanna Leo (rosanna_leo) Well, I must admit, I never thought I'd make the leap to ereaders! Then my husband bought me a Kobo...and I've never looked back! It is fun having a gadget of my own, and it's been some time since I picked up a paperback or hard cover. I don't think I'll ever go back. Love my library full of books, but will always go to my Kobo first now! And it gets Kindle books too, so best of both worlds. :)

message 93: by Sandra (new)

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) I have an extensive library of books and love each and every one of them...however, nothing beats the convenience of my Kindle. message 96: by MH (new)

MH (lenou) | 1 comments Both. Fast-reads, mostly fiction from my Nook but non-fiction, more challenging reads (where I need to flip back to reread a section) I read real books. I do love real books and browsing to reread is much easier for real books.

message 97: by Sammy (new)

Sammy | 3 comments Love real books but the amount of books I read, I would have nowhere to store them.. Also, more convenient to read from my Kobo because I can take it on the train when I travel to university; without adding extra weight to my university books, laptop etc. I also love the fact that you can enlarge text on the Kobo, making it easier to read without straining the eyes.

I do the same thing now, Rosanna. Don't get me wrong, I love books. However, books are cheaper for the ereader. I usually read several books a week so I purchase them for my Kindle when available.

Paganalexandria | 238 comments I stopped buying paper books after getting a kindle a couple of years ago. The only thing I miss is not being able to read in the bathtub anymore. Stopping this habit has saved me money because I haven't had to rebuy the same books due to accidently dropping them in the water. You can actually tell which books in my collection met that fate because they are so "fat".

Oh, Vanessa...I get so distracted too! I catch myself clicking the "on" button on the ereader so many times during the day...it's like a disease and I don't want to be cured!
