Maybe Danielle would love to add more shelves.

I'm okay with the shelves that's here. Now, as for my personal shelf. I can read a book and something can come to me.

I'm trying to stay out of this heated situation. I just put in a blurb on the books I added. I think new shelves are okay when they are warranted, but I also think that we all have our personal shelves if we want to go crazy (like I do with mine).

Looks like that's the ebook version. I don't mind personally because I like to try out the ebooks before I decide if books go on my keeper shelf or not but if one wants the paperback, I guess Amazon looks to be the best bet.

Noir is detective novels like 1940s?

message 158: by CaliGirlRae, Mod Squad (new)

CaliGirlRae (rae_l) | 2017 comments Mod
I agree. Such good stuff. I love noir films, too like Double Indemnity, which is my fave. They had some trippy storytelling back then but I love the tropes, femme fatale, mystery angle. Very cool. And I love it when it's mixed with SF to become sci-fi noir. But that's a rarity. :-(

Yep! And 50s in some cases with the hardboiled style storytelling.

Justine | 1361 comments ohhhhhh so that's what noir is

thanks for the explanation

Yupper. Sometimes called neo noir like Body Heat also.

OK I think it is safe for you to put away the garlic! Leave out the cross and the holy water though. It's not bad at all. I've reached the part where he's just bitten her and she's dying.

Not bad at all

new_user Oh, excellent! So glad you're liking it! Hehe. (Also, be careful of spoilers, LOL.)

I don't think I've ever read noir, hmm. Is it as chauvinistic as noir film? LOL.

Yep, Rae, it's the ebook. I don't reread too often so I don't mind. Hopefully I can transfer it to my iPod.

actually i don't mind spoilers. here's how i read a book:
read first two chapters to get a sense of characters and plot
read last couple of pages to see how story ends
if story does not have happy ending-do not continue with book
return book to seller post haste!!!!!!!!!!!!

message 165: by new_user (last edited Apr 09, 2009 06:50PM) (new)

new_user LOL, Justine. I meant for Rae, because I think she plans to read it too, but a lot of people I know do that too-- they look to the back of the book. I can never do that. I go out of my way to avoid spoilers or glimpsing the last pages or it kind of ruins it for me.

Eugenia, portraying women always as the villain or the temptress who leads men into danger with her feminine wiles is chauvinistic. (Villainy is not empowering.) It's an old trick, LOL. I'm not an expert by any means, but I don't think there are many female heroines in noir (who don't get the hero into danger in one way or another). I could be wrong though.

Lol. Some noir can be chauvinistic but it really depends on the particular work. Like say Sin City was created in the feel of noir. Some of it is a bit chauvinistic but it's an interesting type of fantasy story since much of it is stylized and out of the ordinary. One neo noir written recently features a female protag trying to uncover a murder so she wasn't a femme fatale or anything but the actual detective.

And yep! I have Lynn Viehl's If Angels Burn in my TBR but I haven't gotten to it yet. I'll probably swing by once I'm back in my paranormal mood again.

I'm like you, I can't do that either. Usually I read the first chapter to see if it grabs me and if it has potential I continue, but if it's agony I stop since I'm in it for the journey. I had to do that recently with one book. I was so bummed because the blurb sounded fantastic and I had been waiting for it for so long.

I like supernatural noir, aka occult detective. I think most urban fantasy is patterned in the detective narrative style, one of the reasons I love the genre so much.

That's so true. I think that's one of the reasons it's become so popular. It's very much in that gritty narrative style. Some really good stories and series are coming out of the genre.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT!
All members are welcome to add books to the shelf. But...
1. Please check to make sure the book is not already present on the shelf.
2. If you do add a book that is already present, please delete the copy that you added to the shelf. A member has complained about having books that she added deleted.
3.The bookshelf is for the help and the enjoyment of all members. Let's not create any angst about this. There is enough angst in the world. Thanks.

Do any of you mind if I do a test in regards to adding books to the group shelf. I want to edit a book, to see if my name will replace your name. If I edit a book and your name remains, then that means that someone was deleting books and adding them back, so that there name can show.

message 173: by new_user (new)

new_user Go ahead, Arch. You can try editing one of my add's, as a test.

Arch | 6707 comments Mod
When the last time, you have added a book? I will have to search page by page.

Nevermind, I found one. I'm going to test it now.

Okay, I have edit Revamp and Goodreads is still noting that you were the person that have added the book New_User. So that means, if someone's book goes missing and another person's name is shown as adding it, then the book was deleted and added again or it could be that there is a different ISBN number and the book can be added again.

Anyone can feel free to see what I am talking about. Pretend you want to add this book that I have already added. You will see that you can add the book again, although I have already added it. I'm assuming the ISBN number is different or the book is different somehow. The book is Silent Cradle by Margaret Cuthbert.

Please, if a book can't be added again. Don't delete a book and then add it, so that it is shown as if you have added it.

new_user Er, well, I have my view of the shelf sorted by date added right now, and I'm on the first page.

I've edit my previous reply New_User.

message 177: by new_user (last edited May 18, 2009 02:51PM) (new)

new_user Okay, thanks for checking that out, Arch. I think it's just people accidentally adding different editions. Thanks for clearing that up for us.

message 178: by Justine (new)

Justine | 1361 comments Arch I've just examined what you are talking about. It is true both books can be added. But the system doesn't automatically delete any. It allows you to add both books. So both books would still show on the shelf. For one to disappear, someone has to issue the command to have it delted.

Justine,

New_User had let me edit one of her books to see if my name will be shown as adding the book instead of hers and it stayed the same.

I've came across another lady that was having name swaps on her group as well, but she stated that the problem have been fixed. The books are listed under the right person. Maybe Goodreads had a glitch. Find the books that you have added Justine and see if your name is shown as adding the book, if not, then someone has deleted your books and the other members books, who name wasn't shown as the adder.

message 180: by Justine (new)

Justine | 1361 comments I checked Arch, the books I added are no longer on the shelf.

message 181: by Arch , Mod (new)

Arch | 6707 comments Mod
Then that means someone has deleted your books and add them again or goodreads had a glitch.

message 182: by Justine (new)

Justine | 1361 comments they were re added under another person
