Deborah Ledford (deborahjledford) | 1 comments I read The Round House in December and can't wait to hear what others thought about Louise Erdrich's latest. This is an excellent choice.

message 3: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 2 comments I just started the book last night and had to make myself put it down. When it first came out I was a little uncertain about reading it, but am so glad I am.

Dani (The Pluviophile Writer) (pluviophilewriter) | 237 comments Hoping to get to this book after I finish Emma! It looks really interesting.

Venuskitten | 26 comments I downloaded the Kindle version of this book earlier today after reading about it on Goodreads and now I cannot put it down. I have not read any other novels by Louise Erdrich but I would definitely give her other books a try. Her characters and writing are compelling. I hope the rest of the book lives up to the standard of the first 80 pages.

message 6: by Jen (new)

Jen Started this over the weekend. I'm still early in the story but it grabbed me from page 1. Love the writing and the insight into modern reserve life / culture. Looking forward to discussing when I'm finished it.

message 7: by Marie (new)

Marie (fyeahmarie) | 18 comments I am really liking this so far. It didn't take me long to get used to the whole not-using-quotation-marks-around dialogue style.

My goal is to finish this before the week is over, perhaps in the next couple of days.

message 8: by Arlene (new)

Arlene Walker | 1 comments I actually listened to the audio version of this, and the narrator has an authentic sounding Native American voice. It really enhanced my enjoyment of the book.
BTW, I just joined the NBBC, and am looking forward to lots of interesting dialogue with everyone.

message 9: by Shana (new)

Shana Norris (shana_norris) I just finished The Round House last week. Hands down the best book I've read in 2013. In a way, it reminded me of a grittier, darker, 1980's version of To Kill a Mockingbird.

message 10: by Brenda (new)

Brenda N | 1 comments I am about half way through right now! It is excellent.

message 11: by Susan (new)

Susan | 15 comments Picked it up yesterday at the library but will probably wait until about Wednesday or Thursday to start as I have several going right now.

message 12: by Jen (new)

Jen Just finished this today. I really enjoyed it, though I'm slightly dissatisfied with the resolution. Shouldn't say more on that until others have finished. But what a beautifully written book and a thrilling insight into modern reserve life for those of us who are less familiar.

message 13: by Shana (new)

Shana Norris (shana_norris) Jen: totally agree about the resolution.

I just learned that this is the first book in a trilogy, which helps....

message 15: by Shana (new)

Shana Norris (shana_norris) I had no idea. Thanks for the heads up, Jen.

message 16: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylrussell) I'm not sure what to make of the ending, to be honest. It seemed off, in a way that I can't quite pinpoint.

message 17: by Joanie (new)

Joanie | 714 comments "Santa" gave me this for Christmas (aka-I bought it myself and put it under the tree!) but I haven't started. I'm excited to see everyone is enjoying it so much!

I love it Joanie - that's how Santa delivers his presents to me too!

Just over a hundred pages in and really loving The Round House... the no-quotes throws me off a bit but overall, a great read!

message 19: by Melinda (new)

Melinda (melindahigg) I enjoyed it. Reminded me of The Outsiders or Stand By Me. Intrigued now that I hear it is the first in a trilogy....

message 20: by Marie (new)

Marie (fyeahmarie) | 18 comments I finished this a while ago but didn't get around to crafting a review until yesterday:

message 21: by Mari (new)

Mari | 14 comments I can't say I enjoyed The Round House, but I'm glad I read it. The writing was beautiful and the story important and compelling. I confess that until recently I was ignorant of the jurisdictional catch 22 faced by victims of crime on reservations. I liked the author's decision to tell the tale from the 13 year old boy's viewpoint.

Wow, really? Where did you hear/find this information?

message 23: by Mattia (new)

Mattia Ravasi | 6 comments I'm about 1/3 through and I'm really loving it, I'm literally devouring this book :) and I completely subscribe the comparison to Stand By Me, it reminded me a lot of that and of It too, though the genre here is quite different.

message 24: by Tina (new)

Tina | 143 comments I liked this book a lot and found it very similar in feel to Tony Hillerman's Navaho tribal police series. I especially loved the Star Trek TNG references throughout, which helped give the reader a wonderful context for the teenage boys...how they related to Worf as the warrior. Very imaginative!

message 25: by Mattia (new)

Mattia Ravasi | 6 comments Finished it, loved it.
I liked the pop-culture references too, I think one of the strongest features of the novel is the way the whole setting is masterfully chronologically characterized, and TV, early video games and such sure helped a lot on that front.
Here's my video-review of the book:

message 27: by Jeannie (new)

Jeannie | 3 comments Loved, loved loved this book. So glad I read it. It would be a geat movie.

message 28: by Ann (new)

Ann (annmul) | 10 comments I enjoyed it for the fine writing, compelling story and insights into life on an Indian reservation. Not a page-turner for me because of the sad theme, but I admire Louise Erdrich as an author. Was not aware that this is first of three books. I'll probably pick up the next one when it's published.

message 29: by Eyda (new)

Eyda | 3 comments It was a hard to put down book. I liked the characters and found the story line very interesting.

message 30: by Julie (new)

Julie Brown (julieb657) | 6 comments I'm putting The Round House on my "to read" list. Many friends have recommended it!

message 31: by Larissa (new)

Larissa Loved it. I recommend it to my AP Lit students as a great book to use for Q3. (Sorry, teacher talk) I love books with young narrators, like To Kill a Mockingbird and The Little Friend.

message 32: by Carly (new)

Carly Svamvour (faganlady) | 220 comments I've got this on order - I have probably read it, but don't remember, sooooo - might as well read it - ha ha!
