Sofia (Bookish Wanderess) (sofia-bookishwanderess) | 221 comments This disscussion is about one of the books of the month: The Fault in Our Stars

Jabar Wilson (1j84) | 3 comments Just finished it, It was a beautiful book. I hope everyone else loves it as much as I did.

Alexandra (cherry_crush) | 30 comments Another amazingly beautiful book. I've read very little books which are as good and as beautiful as this one. It's absolutely stunning - the humor, the characters, the storyline.
and the only reason i've given it 4 starts is that I just don't like watching a young life being snatched away, and yes I do know that's life and everything, but... this is just who I am.
Nonetheless, probably one of my favorite books. :)

Violet | 3 comments Loved this book, don't know if I've ever cried as much reading a book! You can see why it was a bestseller, it really gives you a new take on the harsh realities of cancer while throwing in relatable characters and comedy!

Alexandra (alexandra-the-fairy) I read this book last month and was AMAZED! It had to be one of the best books I've ever read!

Zoé I'm currently reading this one. I hope it is as good as the other books by John Green.

Emily (emkathh) I read this book not that long ago ;)

message 8: by Lauren (new) - added it

Lauren (laurenluvssu) I have been wanting to read it, but it's always checked out at the library :/

message 9: by Haley (last edited Mar 02, 2013 09:02AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Haley I read this book last summer, and it is honestly one of the best books I've ever read. There are a lot of books I love, but this one is above and beyond almost all of them. I absolutely cannot say how much I adore Hazel and Gus, and the humor, and the story, and how close to home a book about teenagers with cancer hits. I have a close friend who is overcoming brain cancer, and everything about this book reminded me of her.'

I loved it. I laughed, cried, laughed while I was crying, and I cannot wait until I have time in the future to reread it!

Irissophie | 11 comments I also really liked the book. Wanted to read it, so since it was the botm, I started reading yesterday and just finished it. 5 stars!
The storyline was really nice (sad & happy, but not implausible), the characters interesting, Greens writing style was also quite interesting but not too difficult.
Also a good thing which I don't have with many books, I really want to read it again: I had the feeling I missed some things while reading it.

Christine Snyman | 1 comments This is one of my favorite books, once I started reading I couldn't put it down. I finished it in a day. It was the first book to make me actually laugh out loud and cry because of true sadness and sheer beauty. I've read about 6 times this year already. There's something very rare and beautiful about it, once you pick it up you never want to put it down. You fall in love with the characters instantly. Truly a remarkable book, changed my life and point of view in so many ways.

Meag (meagan01) i really want to read it but it has been checked out of the school library for months now, every time I check

Ayu (ianosheas) | 22 comments I read this book a couple months ago, and honestly, although it was a fantastic read, I think there is too much hype over it.

But, I do love the way John Green creates his characters. There's no sappy, cheesy lines, his character are realists and the book is straightforward with themes. I did love the book.

i agree with you on the hype thing. this was a really good book, but was not a favorite of mine ;D i mean like, i've read better things, even though it was a serious subject.

I also agree with that!

Michelle This book quickly became one of the best books i read in a while.

Jaime | 6 comments I read this book back in January and it quickly became one of my favorite books. It's just so beautiful and saddening. Hazel and Augustus are probably my favorite characters that I have ever read about.

Mariam Gallier I need to read this book!

Taral | 6 comments Awesome. Book. I love it. But some things i found really irrelevant the way they were going on and on about that writer...really???!!
But their love really made me cry... And its still in my mind somewhere

Alice | 8 comments is one of my favorite books

Laila Jane (axlilxlala) | 541 comments I read this in January. Went straight to my favorites folder. The story of Hazel and Gus was so sweet and so heartbreaking, I couldn't stop crying in the end. Loved it!

Hazel was obsessed with the writer and what happened in his book because she had questions about her own life that she wanted answered and was projecting onto the novel and wanted the author to answer her questions. (view spoiler) So the writer bit was relevant.

Georgina Monk | 2 comments It's written on such a way that flows so nicely between events. The characteristion is superb and the use of only one or two times where they let thier emotion out causes them to be even more significant.I read this about a year ago so I can;t really rememeber it but these things stood out to me. And the ending which is all inspiring and stuff.

message 33: by Jana (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jana I've read that book a few month ago and I loved it so much. I've read it in one day because I wasn't able to put it down. I cried and I laughed and I suffered with the characters. It became one of my favourite books and after reading it I bought every book by John Green and I became a fan of him as well.

Zahrah (zahrahwhy) | 20 comments It's so beautiful.

I'll also never look at a Christmas tree without feeling raw from this book again.

Ellyn Oaksmith | 13 comments Just one niggling problem, wondering if anyone agrees. Although it did not interfere with my enjoyment of the book at all -- did anyone feel that these teens were a little too evolved for their ages? Sometimes it took me aback.

Alexandra: Not sure if this applies but Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walters, is another book I felt this way about. Far more edgy and not for kids because there are some very adult themes but I thought it had some of the same raw, powerful writing. Just a thought. I cannot stop thinking about either of these books.

palina I've just started reading this book and to be honest, I was scared to because what if it wasn't as good as everyone says it is. I've only read the first 20 pages so far and it's already just so amazingly beautiful.

Joanie Dugan (thealaskanyoung) Ellen - I really don't feel that way. Hazel is incredibly smart, and I would guess its because of her staying away from school and having time to read so much. I also think that her cancer has given her a little more perspective. Augustus is smart too, but he always tries to sound much smarter than he is and uses words wrong. They aren't normal teenagers. They are normal teenagers with cancer. Also, I think you are underestimating teens a little. Not all of us are immature.

I'm definitely going to check it out, thank you :)

Natalie | 5 comments John Green is one of my favorite authors and this book is definitely my favorite. I wasn't sure when I found out it was a "cancer book," but that was never how I found this book to read. It was beautiful and so real.

Dominique (theworkingclassreader) I read this book last month and I feel like I am in the 1% of people who can't see what all the fuss is about. I didn't dislike it but there were a lot of things that bothered me about it. Does anyone else out there have anything negative to say about it?

Dominique (theworkingclassreader) Ellyn wrote: "Just one niggling problem, wondering if anyone agrees. Although it did not interfere with my enjoyment of the book at all -- did anyone feel that these teens were a little too evolved for their age..."

Yes absolutely!!! I have a hard time reading YA because I DON'T believe teens behave this way in real life and perhaps it's my age but I really "don't care" about teen love. I still mildly enjoyed it though, I don't want to come across as totally cold :)

Dominique (theworkingclassreader) I get that they are teenagers with cancer and that has given them extra maturity but then I also think of some/all of John Green's other books and I feel like the characters in those are pretty much the same.

message 44: by CL (new) - rated it 5 stars

CL This book completely drew me in from page 1 and kept me reading all night until I finished it! I absolutely loved this book! I felt myself so engaged with the book, laughing and crying with the characters.

Heidi Marie (sunshineyheidi) | 5 comments This book was one of the most beautiful books I've ever read. I loved the line "We are all symptoms of death." Some parts of the book were a little predictable, but over all, very well done.

Magnolieeah | 2 comments This book was just great...perfect, beautiful. I do think the characters are a bit mature, but I really don't see that as being all that unrealistic at all. What I find even hsrder to believe is how teenagers act in sooome YA books I've read xD But remember, they're 16 and 17, and some teens are more mature than others.
Overall, MARVELOUS book.<3

bamaace83 | 257 comments I thought this was a very well written book. Having experience working in hospital settings with teens diagnosed with cancer, this book does a great job portraying what is going on in some young teens minds. Loved the story line between Hazel and Gus. This book would make a great movie if it's done right.

palina Dominique wrote: "I get that they are teenagers with cancer and that has given them extra maturity but then I also think of some/all of John Green's other books and I feel like the characters in those are pretty muc..."

But Hazel stayed at home so she was able to educate herself more and spend lots of time reading books. She's also already passed high school, so she would be smarter than the average high school student. Augustus is also very different from the stereotypical teenager and manages to use big words. They have had a lot of time on their hands so they end up more mature than the rest. It's not just the fact that they had cancer so they got introduced to more grown up problems at an early age, they are just different.
You also mention that most of John Green's other books are also quite mature and sophisticated, but maybe that's because he enjoys writing about people that are, more mature, and different, from most of the people their age. I agree that some authors, when they write about the same situations all the time, it could get a bit tiring. However, with John Green, even though the characters might act more sophisticated and different, he manages to give them a whole different aspect to them, so no one character is pretty much the same to any other one.
I don't know though, it might just be me though... That's just what I think.

Sofia | 2 comments Absolutely one of the best book I've read. It definitely kept me turning the pages and threw in twists that I did not expect. Perfect and beautiful in all the right places. Very well written book! I would love if it became a movie in the near future.

message 50: by Gina (new) - rated it 5 stars

Gina I read this book about a 2 weeks ago for a book report i had to do. I was hooked after the first chapter an finished the book in one sitting. John Green is a wonderful author who used his magnificent writing skills to tell this emotional story of Augustus and Hazel. As a teenager myself this book showed me important lessons that I havent understood until now. No matter what age you are, you will learn something from this book. This book was not just about two kids with cancer, it was about two teenagers enjoying their lives, making eachother happy, and being there for eachother through the good and the bad. This story was so emotional that at one point I had to put down the book and stop reading because I was crying to hard. Literally I was bawling, and I have cried about books before but not this much. This book touched me in a way that no other story ever has.
