I was thinking the other day. If I had to choose would I prefer to read a novel that is in a series or would I prefer stand alone. There are some really good series but I am actually leaning towards stand alone. Which do you prefer and what are some of your favorite IR reads in either category?

I love series books...but not when it's a series about the same characters. Then I'd rather just read one long stand alone book with a HEA and epilogue.

It seems the norm nowadays is a shorter book with a cliffhanger with 2 or 3 books about the same hero & heroine. It wasn't bad until every author seems to be doing it. The list of books I have that I'm waiting for a sequel to resolve a cliffhanger is becoming ridiculously long. And then it's even more frustrating when some authors/publishers don't release the next book for 6-12 months (or more).

When a series is about a family or group of friends with a different hero & heroine in each book with some catch up on previous leads, I'm all over that!

Fiona McGier | 128 comments Stand-alones are usually what the author plans, but the characters that are on the sidelines, like the best friend, or the other family members, have a way of yelling out that it's their time for the spotlight! Honestly, that's how my series' got written. Some characters just won't shut up otherwise.

Nadine (peanutsmom) | 81 comments I do like series but it depends, at times it seems as if an author chops one book into three as a means to earn more money.

I love series told from different characters.

I love a good series, but when it seems like the stories are the same every book, it gets a little frustrating. I've been looking for more stand alones lately.

Robin (robin-alisha) | 209 comments I like both, or I wouldn't mind both; I already read both series and stand alone. It depends on the book/books whether or not I'd want to read it or continue with it.

Despite my last comment in this thread, I prefer series that follow the same characters.

It depends. I am getting kind of burned out with all the series I have to keep up with. I am down for a series with a really good story idea that can be sustained over a few books. I don't like the part I, II, III trend that is prevalent, and I freaking hate cliffhangers.
