Kristin Vincent (kristinkitty) But, there is a catch. I won't read anything with sex in it, extreme violence or swearing.

Pretty much something you wouldn't mind reading in front of your grandma.

Any ideas?

Alan Buick (aljbuick) | 35 comments Hi K.J. Couldn't help noticing your post; check out "The Little Coat", a true, dramatic and ultimately a love story I had the privilege of writing.

Sincerely Alan J. Buick

Elle Jacklee | 33 comments I would like to humbly recommend The Tree of Mindala, which I wrote. It is middle grade/ya, but adults have seemed to enjoy it as well.

Also, I would higly recommend The Wretched of Muirwood. It's the first in a trilogy by Jeff Wheeler. I loved it and the next two were great as well.

Nancy Hogue (nanhogue) | 38 comments Hi K.J. if you like cozy mysteries, look at my page. My book is listed and several other great authors also on GRs are friends.
Enjoy,

Elizabeth Newton (elizabethnewton) | 59 comments Couldn't resist the opportunity to spread the word about my series, K.J.
I am writing a fun adventure series "Train Flight" with space and time travel for teens and young adults, but like Elle's book, adults have enjoyed it a lot too.
The first book is "Moon Man" Train Flight Moon Man (Book 1) by Elizabeth Newton
I'd be honoured if you'd like to check it out. :)
Happy book searching. Blessings :)

Hi everyone,

If you enjoy reading thriller and mystery novels, then I would recommend my debut novel, Killer Rumors. It is a combination of James Patterson Patterson and Dan Brown. Patterson due to the shorter-length chapters and constant dialogue and Brown due to religious and Christian themes. Hope you can take a look. Would love to hear your thoughts on it. Wishing you all the best!

Dean MacAllister (deanmacallister) I thoroughly recommend you do not read my book...as it seems to contain all the things you find offensive. I'm sure your grandma is a lovely person.

Hah! That alone made ME want to read your book.

Elizabeth Newton (elizabethnewton) | 59 comments In that case, my books might be too 'nice' for you. They do have lots of danger in them though! :P

Well, my book isn't tame in the least, but my editor is my grandfather so I think it fits your catagory. Its a YA gothic paranormal novel called The Rift The Rift (Vessel of Souls) by S.K.N. Hammerstone There is no sex, minimum violence, and very slight language. The description on amazon is:
Is death really the end? or can people come back... Rachael Taylor has returned from the grave with no memory of who she is or which of the two worlds she exists in is real. In one world she is a teenager living what is considered the normal life. In the other she is tormented night and day in a burning city. When strange creatures start to invade both worlds, she must discover what she is before everything collapses. The Rift is a Young Adult Paranormal/ Horror novel in the series Vessel of Souls. It follows the life of Rachael Taylor and the people and creatures that appear in it.
The link to the paper back is here, priced at $9.99

message 18: by John (new)

John Hancock (johngregoryhancock) | 135 comments I really enjoyedGriffin's Daughter I can't remember if there is any swearing or not, but that series was good to read.

if we move past the restrictions of swearing and whatnot, I also thoroughly enjoyed The Dragonbone Chair

and The Baker's Boy

and I might humbly add my own book: A Plague of Dreams for a variety of stories. I think one or two might have curse words.

message 19: by Mel (new)

Mel (bullet123) | 16 comments My story has murders in it, which are a little violent in places (albeit done in a refined mid Victorian way ;)), so probably not your thing. If you are interested it is http://www.amazon.co.uk/Shattered-Clu....

If you want a story that is interesting but has no sex or violence then "Good Omens" by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman is worth a read. As is "Great Tales from English History" by Robert Lacey.

Mel wrote: "My story has murders in it, which are a little violent in places (albeit done in a refined mid Victorian way ;)), so probably not your thing. Please tell me, is there a refined and Victorian way to do the sex scenes?

message 21: by Judy (new)

Judy Goodwin | 136 comments All my fantasy works currently out do not have sex, extreme violence, or swearing. I can't promise the same of my science fiction, however. They are suitable for middle grade up.

Susan Ziggy (susanziggyhelpsyahoocom) | 7 comments Hi everyone, I have a good read if you like relationship advice. My slogan is say what you mean, mean what you say, but don't be mean:)
The title is What to Do Before You Say "I Do". It's available at Barnes and Noble.com and Amazon.com

message 23: by Jenelle (last edited Mar 12, 2013 01:34PM) (new)

Jenelle K.J. I'm right there with ya on those preferences.

Well, since you asked... my fantasy fiction novel is the beginning of a 4-book series that fits your requirements. I originally wrote it for my father to read out loud to myself, my mom, and my younger siblings (who were 16, 14, and 10 at the time) each night after dinner. It's what I like to call "Family Friendly Fantasy."

King's Warrior by Jenelle Leanne Schmidt

Available in paperback or kindle thus far. (as an aside, my Grandparents actually did read it... which is LOVE as they don't generally read fantasy! They said they liked it...) :)

If you want to check it out, you can read the first 13 chapters or so for free here: http://authonomy.com/books/51296/king...

The 2nd book SECOND SON is coming out later this spring/early summer.

Other books I love in this vein:
Anything by Diana Wynn Jones
The Sword of Shannara (The Original Shannara Trilogy #1) by Terry Brooks by Terry Brooks and the rest of the series, SUPER clean for fantasy.
The Icarus Hunt by Timothy Zahn (which is sci-fi, not fantasy... but it's SO good) by Timothy Zahn
Into the Vast (Chronotrace Sequence, #1) by D.J. Edwardson is a newer one and also sci-fi rather than fantasy, but I really enjoyed it.
The Enchanted Forest Chronicles is one of my favorite series of all time... so snarky and fun.

My absolute favorite book of all time is actually not fantasy (fantasy is my favorite genre) but I have to recommend this one... it's sort of like Where the Red Fern Grows...
He Whistles for the Cricket

All right... now that I've written you a novel of a comment, I have all sorts of other suggestions, but I'll let you get started with those! :) Happy reading, whatever you choose next!

message 24: by Jenelle (new)

Jenelle P.S. Thanks for posting this request, because I'm definitely going to have to check out some of these other suggestions!

Frank Hofer If I can toot my own horn, Duck Blood Soup might fit your criteria - some of our test readers were early teens and their parents had no problem with the content. It's a fantasy were we blend magic with science and engineering. There is some violence but no gore.

Leonie (leonierogers) | 43 comments "It is great to find a book that you can actually share with the whole family from around 13 through to grand parents. This book has some great action areas, some really sad moments as well as making you feel like you are part of Frontier. It is a book that you just want to keep reading" is one of the reviews of my speculative fiction book Frontier Incursion.

You will definitely be safe reading it in front of your Grandma - even out loud!

Although it is mostly Sci-fi it has some fantasy elements, and appears to be appealing to a wider audience than I expected. (Which is nice!)

I hope you find more than one good book from this list!

T. Watts (twilliamwatts) | 5 comments Totally PG (and in need of honest reviews) A Hummen in Spiral Gorge is a middle-grade fantasy that takes gnomes to a new level.

message 28: by Martha (new)

Martha Johnson | 12 comments I have been quite surprised that my novel, In Our Midst, seems to appeal to all ages, even getting some serious traction with the retirement community. I think it's because it is a great story but it isn't salacious. I made an effort to do that because it is about two gay sons of a community -- one in the Korean War and one a teen in the 1990's -- and I believe the subject is an important one for the entire community to read about and even discuss. So, I wrote it to be accessible for everyone. And that seems to have worked.

It's a quarter finalist so far in the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award so that gives you an independent sense of whether it is any good. I, of course, love it. www.InOurMidstTheNovel.com

Mel (bullet123) | 16 comments "Please tell me, is there a refined and Victorian way to do the sex scenes?"

Now I have no sex in my stories I'm afraid :D. If I had to think though, I would presume there would copious amounts of crinolines. And moustaches.

message 30: by Maggie (new)

Maggie Thom (maggiethom) | 9 comments I had to laugh at your comment 'not something you'd read in front of your grandma'. I would say mine fits in that category, however I have been rather shocked by the number of 80 and 90 year old women who've read my book. I kept thinking, you shouldn't be reading that stuff. There isn't a lot of sex or violence but there is enough that I was somewhat uncomfortable with them reading it. The good news, they loved it. So you just never know what grandma might be reading. :)

message 31: by Missy (new)

Missy Johnson | 24 comments I know my grandma certainly loved the raunchy scenes. I remember my hubby picking up one of her books and being shocked at some of the sex scenes. She claimed she skipped those scenes, but I don't think so lol

How 'bout one about a bookworm, a prince, short-fused doctor, and a boy too clever for his own good?

Oh there's magic and a plot to drown in too, just fyi

First few chapters are free through goodreads' preview program!

The Towers of Adrala

When magic leaps from fairy-tale to reality at the tips of every person's fingers, chaos unfolds in the world of Adrala.

Four unlikely but steadfast friends; Eris, Pird, Zook, and Sye, have their loyalty to one another tested when they find themselves at the center of an invisible war and a conspiracy three-thousand years in the making.

With their home destroyed and their history a lie, they must choose to confront the faceless foe they've been chosen to defeat, or face the nameless puppeteers pulling their strings.

Well that rules out mine on 3 counts:)

Hmm let me see, you could look at The Dragon Box, it is more of a young person's book but it is a lot of fun.

The Dreamweaver's Journey - this is more YA but really good and doesn't have sex in, or much swearing or overdone violence.

Dragon Fate now this does how violence in, battles and such but not gratuitous and I can't remember about the swearing. There is an adult relationship but the hankie pankie is implied:) It is very good as well.

The Mage's Tomb
