Malice (LadyMalice) | 35 comments I just finished Fantasy Lover, and tho I found her writing to be a little less than exciting, I did absolutely LOVE the story! I want to read them all but I need to know if it's crucial to read them in order? I ran to the bookstore to get the next one and they didn't have it :( but they did have the 3rd so I figured what the hell and grabbed it. Will I be making a mistake by not reading them in order?
Thanks!
~Malice

message 2: by Annvelwis (new)

Annvelwis | 75 comments Hi,
If by 2nd book you mean Dragonswan and by 3rd Night Pleasures then IMO you can easily skip to 3rd. While Dragonswan is an enjoyable read, nothing crucial to the main storyline of series happens in it. But if by 2nd book you mean Night Pleasures and by 3rd Night Embrace, I really would advise you to start looking for 2nd...

message 3: by The Flooze (new)

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 1593 comments Yeah, if it's Dragonswan, no problems skipping that one. It's a novella that's not pertinent to the series. In fact, I don't think the characters in it have ever even popped back up again.

message 5: by Stav (new)

Stav (voliotisa) | 291 comments The only one time the character is mentioned is so insignificant, it not worth reading it...but what the hell...I might read it myself now that Michelle posted the link...

but I suggest reading them in order... I am going to start Acheron this weekend, and its like by reading all the books in order, you build up this anticipation for it, plus, you have a whole of background info that's useful.... and this way you can pick which are you favorite Dark Hunters from the whole bunch :)

message 6: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (dawnv) | 320 comments I think you should read them in order with the exception of Dragonawan which I never read. Anyway she tends to introduce characters and that character becomes the main character in the next story. Plus I think she does a good job of keeping all the characters in play. Additionally Acheron gets revealed a little in each book beginning with book 2 I think.

message 7: by The Flooze (new)

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 1593 comments Oh good lord, yes. You have to read them in order! But DragonSwan is sort of unconnected in a way.

Wait, Stav...where do they mention it again??

message 8: by Stav (new)

Stav (voliotisa) | 291 comments They mention Sebastian Katalakis (he's like Vane's distant cousin) in the one with Wren - Seize the Night - where the Were-Hunters hold that meeting...

but its not really important to the story line in anyway...I just have read it recently and can remember insignificant details like that

message 9: by Stav (new)

Stav (voliotisa) | 291 comments you know, the meeting Savitar keeps an eye on so the WereHunters stay in line

message 10: by The Flooze (new)

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 1593 comments You know, I thought that as I was asking you, but thanks for giving me the specifics!

message 11: by Malice (new)

Malice (LadyMalice) | 35 comments Yea I was referring to Night Pleasures as the second, which neither bookstore in the area had, so I grabbed Night Embrace since it was there and thought I might get lucky and find that I could start it right away lol. Oh well, atleast i'll have it whenever I do read Night Pleasures. DragonSwan was not in the list printed inside of the first book so I hadn't even heard of that one. May check it out just for the hell of it tho since Michelle provided a link...Thanks! Guess I will start on the next Neil Gaiman book I have in the meantime. Not PNR, but he's a good storyteller for sure :)

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 1593 comments Ooo, which Neil book? I have just about all of them out of the library to read this month!

And, yes, you do have to wait. But it will be worth it!

message 13: by Malice (new)

Malice (LadyMalice) | 35 comments I'm going to start Neverwhere. I loved his sandman graphic novels when I was in highschool, and I read American Gods a few weeks back and thought it was great! I'm hoping this one will be good too :)

~Malice

message 14: by Michelle (new)

Michelle | 79 comments I read all the books except the Anthologies and Dragsonswan. I didn't miss a thing. Here is her new website.... You should read everything in this order.

http://www.officialsanctuary.com/dark...

message 15: by Jess (last edited Apr 02, 2009 08:18AM) (new)

Jess | 173 comments I would suggest reading the anthologies. They are separate stories but some of them are about dark hunters that you don't read much about in the main series. For example, one of them is about a dark hunter who lives in Italy I believe his name was Raphael. Then there was another great story about "dracula" and how him and his wife are really dark hunters but they hate each other.

They're not essential to the main story, but they were definitely interesting to read!

message 16: by Adrienne (new)

Adrienne i'm now reading them in order ( i started with Acheron:: how out of order can you get LOL)::found that if i didn't i lost the sub plots::characters and their stories are often started in one book and are woven into other characters books :)::same with the way some main character are introduced to us::I've heard Dragonswain is really difficult to get hold of::someone on Kenyons Minions group may know::

Thanks for the detailed list Anna, that is most helpful.

message 23: by Annvelwis (new)

Annvelwis | 75 comments Actually, Dragonswan was printed in anthology first (Tapestry), and then reprinted singly. But that's just a detail...

message 26: by The Flooze (new)

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 1593 comments UM, I'm on a blackberry, so that's probably the mobile version. Sorry! Go to www.wattpad.com and search for Dragonswan. It should come up as the only entry.

message 27: by The Flooze (new)

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 1593 comments Btw, Malice...I'm reading Gaiman's Smoke and Mirrors right now. Short stories. I envy this man's imagination. He's thrilling!

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish Michelle M. wrote: "UM, I'm on a blackberry, so that's probably the mobile version. Sorry! Go to www.wattpad.com and search for Dragonswan. It should come up as the only entry."

I was trying to download the free Wattpad but Windows won't open it.

message 29: by Adrienne (new)

Adrienne If you like Gaiman have you read *The Good Faeries of New York* by martin Miller ::he reckons its the best book ever written

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish OK, I see where they are... thank you, that's an amazing site!

message 31: by The Flooze (new)

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 1593 comments UM, I use it all the time. It's great with my blackbert and seems to work well on most mobile phones with download capabilities. If you ever choose to use the mobile version, forgo the reader. Go straight to the Read Offline link, and you get a page where you can choose to download the whole enchilada, or just parts. The Reader doesn't seem to work, but when you follow the directions above, it downloads to your phone, adds a neat little icon, and you're ready to read! I've gotten countless books this way. Beware though, since it's user uploaded, a few books here and there are not complete. Check the page count listed to make sure.

message 32: by The Flooze (new)

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 1593 comments Lol. It's great on my BlackBERRY.

Damn typos.

message 33: by The Flooze (new)

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 1593 comments Adrienne, I bought that book based on his recommendation! It's yet another of the unread books glowering at me from the coffee table. I keep telling it to be patient, its time will come. Charlaine Harris also recommended Miller's The Lonely Wolf Girl (I think that's the correct title). She mentions the books she's reading in her blog and it's a good source for recommendations.

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish Michelle M. wrote: "Adrienne, I bought that book based on his recommendation! It's yet another of the unread books glowering at me from the coffee table. I keep telling it to be patient, its time will come. Charlaine ..."

My son read Lonely Werewolf Girl and really liked it. He said it was funny, and I remember him laughing out loud while reading it.

message 35: by The Flooze (new)

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 1593 comments Hey, Anna...I love this series BECAUSE all the books are so interconnected and the story arc is built up over time. Any other PNR series you can suggest that are more like this? I prefer this style to those books where the arc is nonexistent or takes a real backseat.

message 36: by Adrienne (new)

Adrienne Nice to find people who've heard of Matin Miller :):: anyway my next DH is......refers to list above.....*Devil May Cry* Sin and Kats book if i remember correctly::i have alot of books on my to read list (i think most of them are DH )::but i do need to get back to DHs as i find them nice reads::love all the light hearted banter that goes on along side all the serious stuff::

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish Devil May Cry was the first DH I read, and one of my favorite.

message 38: by The Flooze (new)

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 1593 comments Oh, Sin! I love Sin! And you meet Xypher in that one! Yay! And Kish will provide your dose of funny. He is hysterical.

message 39: by Adrienne (new)

Adrienne seems like i need to get a move on with *Kiss of Midnight* then::DH is going out tonight so that means i can have a marathon reading session :)with wine::and dips::and doritos Yay::

Sorry, DH is Dark Hunter, one of Sherrilyn Kenyon's series. I think there are like 23,000 books in that series. LOL

message 43: by Malice (new)

Malice (LadyMalice) | 35 comments DOH, shoulda known that one since I started this topic ON Kenyon's DH series LOL. Must...drink...more...cappucino!

message 44: by Meredith Barrons (new)

Meredith Barrons | 39 comments Okay so I just read Fantasy Lover and Night Pleasures and liked them both. Archeron/Ash is introduced in Night pleasures and I am intrigued by his character. Is it going to mess me up if I read Archeron next! I don't know if I can wait 15 more books to read his story! ha ha. Is he in a lot of the other books too?

message 45: by Malice (new)

I just finished "Dance with the Devil" which is like book 4 I think, and Ash is in them so far.
~Malice

message 46: by Stav (last edited May 15, 2009 09:26AM) (new)

Stav (voliotisa) | 291 comments Meredith919,
I know you don't want to wait , but with each book, you learn a little bit more about Ash, and all the questions (well almost all) get answered in Acheron...I don't recommend reading them out of order...it is 15 books, but I read them all up to Acheron pretty much over the course of a month... it was well worth reading them in order...trust me :)

message 47: by Meredith Barrons (new)

Meredith Barrons | 39 comments Okay, thanks! I am going to stick to the reading order then! It will give me something to look forward too! They are quick reads so I bet it won't take me long at all! : )

message 48: by Meredith Barrons (new)

Meredith Barrons | 39 comments Ooops, I forgot to ask if you guys read the short stories also, or just the main books?

message 49: by Stav (new)

Stav (voliotisa) | 291 comments Regarding the short stories, I've read almost all except two of them. It's not neccessary to read them, you don't really lose out on anything, it's more like interesting filler material... The only one I really recommend is the one about Nick...it comes later... I don't want to give anything away though. And I think you can download it at the Santuary website.

message 50: by Wendalyn (new)

Wendalyn Peterson | 22 comments I agree on reading them in order before you read Acheron as alot of questions about him are answered but unless you have been following his character the first part of the book won't make much sense to you. I just love her Dark Hunter books. Acheron was my fav..
