In the first third of the book, the hero is rescued by a woman who asks him to repay the favour by sleeping with her. She has always been a virgin, and she is embarrassed about it. She feels that the pupils at the school she teaches pity and laugh at her. He obliges, and when he meets her again in the final third of the book, she has become a strong and confident woman.
I thought it was Smokescreen, because I always thought it had something to do with Africa, but I just re-read it and its not at all.
