jaxnsmom | 8341 comments Whatvdid you think of The White Tiger? I disliked the main character so much that I couldn't appreciate anything about the book.

message 3: by Esther (new)

Esther (nyctale) | 5194 comments I meant "I'm reading this one next". I should start it tonight or tomorrow. I will let you know.

Janice (jamasc) | 59951 comments Are you doing high or low octane, Esther?

message 5: by Esther (new)

Esther (nyctale) | 5194 comments Forgot about that.. Well, i am doing last names. Correct me if i am wrong but it can be either low or high, right? If so i might go for high. If i can get it done early enough i might go for round #2.

message 6: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59951 comments You've got the right idea, Esther! Call it high and then you can move on to the second task if you complete the first one.

Ava Catherine | 4258 comments Hi, Esther. So thrilled you are participating in the challenge with us! You have started with a bang! Have fun with it! : )

Esther (nyctale) | 5194 comments I am taking this as a way of getting rid of my TBR. The pile has grown so big the I expect to get a city notice for building without a permit. I have a few that are always pushed back. White Tiger being one of them. (now don't go telling me that I will add as much as I remove, I am still happy in denialland.)

lol
Odd, your goal seems similar to the one I started out with.

So far I have knocked several "home library" ones off the list in favor of something someone else has posted, and which I can only get from an outside source.

I can read my "at home books" anytime; must have a newly mentioned one now!☺

LOL! Let us know how things are in denialland in a month or two :D

message 11: by Ava Catherine (new)

Ava Catherine | 4258 comments Oh, dear, we all start out with the best intentions. I don't know what happens to us along the way. And I don't have the shopping gene that so many females have, but I could spend hours in a bookstore...happily. LOL

Good luck knocking down that tbr pile!!! * wink

Esther (nyctale) | 5194 comments jaxnsmom wrote: "What did you think of The White Tiger? I disliked the main character so much that I couldn't appreciate anything about the book."

Well, one down. The White Tiger: read

Jaxnsmom, I took me a while to get into this one to be honest. Mostly because I did not care much about the main character. Not as much as you did, but it did turn what could have been a really good book into a ok one.

message 13: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59951 comments You've made a start and knocked off the first book! Every book read is a bonus.

message 14: by Ava Catherine (new)

Ava Catherine | 4258 comments Look at you! On book 2 already! Go girl! ; )

message 15: by Esther (new)

Esther (nyctale) | 5194 comments No go... :)
I am back reading La fiancée américaine which could be classified as a weapon. Thick book with a really small font. It is taking me forever but it is sooooooooo good. The alphabet will continue after the toppler.

message 16: by Esther (new)

Esther (nyctale) | 5194 comments B done. Raven's Shadow. Not a bad book, but that's about it. I will read the sequel eventually so I know the rest of the story, but I am in no hurry to do so.

message 17: by Esther (new)

Esther (nyctale) | 5194 comments C done. Suspect. Definitely an entertainment, as all Crais' books. I could not put it down. I really like the dog angle. But if you remove Maggie (the dog) from the equation, the story is not up to Crais' other books.

Started the D book last night.

message 18: by Esther (last edited Apr 22, 2013 08:40AM) (new)

Esther (nyctale) | 5194 comments I am home sick. The 2 first nice days of spring and I spend them in bed. The only good thing is that I got my D book done between naps. I am taking a break from the alphabet. I am going back to The Gunslinger and The Lies of Locke Lamora that I read for another group.

message 19: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59951 comments I hope you feel better soon, Esther. At least you're getting some time to read. :)

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments After zipping through four alphabet books you deserve a break!

message 22: by Esther (new)

Esther (nyctale) | 5194 comments I stared my E book. Erikson's Gardens of the Moon. I heard good things about it. We shall see.

message 23: by Esther (new)

Esther (nyctale) | 5194 comments I was too lazy to go out to my car to get my "E" book. So I started my F book: In the Heart of Darkness.

What's The Lies of Locke Lamora like?

It took me a while to get into it but once I was there I could not let go. The book has "intermission sections" here and there between chapters of the main story. It is a nice way to give the background story without having to do a big thick introduction section at the beginning of the novel. The story is fun but I found it a bit lacking at times. I also had to stretch my “suspension of disbelief” a bit thin. Lynch surprised me a few times in what happens to his characters. A negative point, I do not care for Locke. Bottom line, It will not make my top ten but I probably will read another one in the series.

message 26: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Thanks Esther. This book keeps coming up in my recommendations based on other books I've read.

message 27: by Esther (new)

Esther (nyctale) | 5194 comments I had put my E book aside to accomodate group reads and challenges but I realised that I read the lastest Evanovich somewhere in there. Then I listened to a Joanne Fluke and read a Grissom during the Toppler.

I am now at H!!!!! yeaaaaaaaaaaah.

message 28: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59951 comments The toppler worked out well for you!

message 29: by jaxnsmom (new)

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments Way to take care of two things at once!

message 30: by Esther (last edited Jun 29, 2013 11:35AM) (new)

Esther (nyctale) | 5194 comments For my H author, I have read Wool Omnibus (Silo, #1). I had heard good things about it but I did not expect to like it this much. Could not stop reading. Simple story, but well done.

message 31: by Esther (new)

Esther (nyctale) | 5194 comments Done with I, The Unconsoled, and on with K, Firestorm, which, probably will not be anything to write home about judging by the 1st chapters.

message 32: by Esther (new)

Esther (nyctale) | 5194 comments Done with my K book, Forever Odd, definitely a cute series.

On with my L book. L'Énigme du retour.

message 33: by Marnie (new)

Marnie (marnie19) | 3260 comments I am going to add Odd Thomas to my TBR - this series keeps popping up in these threads and sounds interesting.

While I would never it is a great series, i find it cute and different.

message 35: by Esther (new)

Esther (nyctale) | 5194 comments L done. As it happens, i am in line for a M book at the library. I am going to read "just because" and then decide if i wait or read out of my TBR.

message 36: by Esther (new)

Esther (nyctale) | 5194 comments Finished listening to Railsea. A YA novel by China Miéville. A really fun listen.

Read the 1st Harry Hole, L'homme chauve-souris (The Bat). I cannot say I like it that much. But I will give the series another chance and read the 2nd one as I believe the most annoying thing about it was the translation.

Next is a reread, 1984

Did you read The Bat in French? I started the series with the seventh book, The Snowman, and the eighth book, The Leopard, before I read The Bat. I'm really enjoying the series. I think his writing may have been weaker in the beginning.

Yes I did read it in French as I cannot read it in its original version. As everyone is pretty much telling the same thing, that the next ones are better, I am going to go on. And hope the translator retired in the process. :)

message 39: by Esther (new)

Esther (nyctale) | 5194 comments I just realized that I have not updated this for a while. I read o, P, Q. Next for R, one book I have been wanting to read for a while: The Name of the Wind, which i should start this weekend.

message 40: by Esther (last edited Sep 19, 2013 06:35PM) (new)

Esther (nyctale) | 5194 comments I finished The Name of the Wind. And i am so glad it is finished. I may actually have a decent night of sleep tonight. :)
seriously, I really liked it.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I have The Name of the Wind on my TBR list. Nice to know it is worth waiting for until I get to it. I will have to save up on my sleep before I start though, huh? LOL!

I'm pleased you enjoyed it. I know how you feel - I couldn't put it down. I can't wait to read the next one but it's 1000 pages so - Christmas holidays might be a good time to read it for me then I'll have more time to read it in a short space of time.

The 2nd one is planned for "post alphabet" time. And when i am done with my list of new fantasy author. I have been in a fantasy binge this year. I had not really read a lot of it for years. And did not realized that i had missing a lot. I had discovered Weeks and Sanderson, but i had missed Lawrence, and Rothfuss. I still have 3 books in my "new to me" tbr and i will be going back to the kingkiller.

message 47: by Esther (new)

Esther (nyctale) | 5194 comments Well. I am reading Mitla Pass for my U book and started listening to The Jungle Law as a V book. Both being toppler books.

Not sure about the latest. I barely started but it does not grab my attention so far. We shall see.

Next is one I have been dying to read The Blinding Knife.

message 48: by Esther (new)

Esther (nyctale) | 5194 comments Well, U and V done. Starting on W[book:The Blinding Knife|12499290. This one should be a quick read. Who needs sleep?

And my snail is stuck in snow. (yes, we have the white stuff falling here today)
