Some people call the forest along Kulhn's southern frontier cursed, but that's not actually the case. It's just having a long run of bad luck. It is true that the shape shifters, dark fay, and undead can make things tense sometimes. Not to mention the other things, the ones that are actually dangerous, deeper in toward the heart of the forest. But the southern woods are a perfect refuge for those who need one. Such as witches hiding from the northern temples.
Jess was working her fur traps when the bewildered young man stumbled out of the bushes. She gave him shelter and agreed to guide him back to town. Unexpected complications arose along the way when a dwarven elder swore he recognized Peteros from their last meeting, six hundred years ago. It didn't help matters that dwarves are real sticklers about debts. But the real complication came when they fell in love. If the priesthood found out that the king's youngest son had chosen a witch, their reaction would make werewolves look merciful.
Jess soon learned that nothing in the forest was as dangerous as royal politics. Peteros hadn't been intended to survive his trip to the woods, and his homecoming sparked no joy in the hearts of his family. When his brothers sharpened blades and called in the hunters, it was time to make a run back to the forest. But with dynastic rivalry about to spark a civil war, the re-awakening of a family curse almost as old as the kingdom itself, and temple witch-hunters closing in, would even the southern woods be a safe haven?
