Fortress Besieged discussion

I think I gave it a good try, but I simply couldn't finish this book. The continual dinners and game of one upmanship played by the characters just got too tedious. Does the plot develop eventually?

What the author intended to write about, I guess, is just the tedious things of the hypocritical men or women.But the book itself is by no means tedious.
