Darren And by watching, I mean singing along with the credits, beer in hand?

Seriously. Love this show.

message 2: by Mark (new)

Mark Would love to but its not available in the UK.

message 3: by Liz (new)

Liz I've heard its the Game of Thrones...of regular TV. Is it as good as everyone says? And is it available for streaming or something so I can go back and watch from the beginning(link please?)? My understanding is that even though its history channel, its got a fictional plot and is not a documentary, though it is historically accurate.

message 4: by [deleted user] (new)

Hey,I've seen every episode so far.I think it's great.

message 5: by Christopher (new)

Christopher Preiman | 347 comments I very much want to but not having cable will have to wait a bit to see what everyone is on about.

message 6: by Candace (new)

Candace (cprimackqcom) I love this show. My favorite behind Game of Thrones. I think people are put off when I tell them its on the History channel, though I tell them it's a fictional series. Great actors and I feel as though I am there. I have always loved strong females and the Shield Maiden is awesome.

Guillermo | 24 comments Im watching it too. I thought the first ep was meh, but then it really took off. Great show.

Here's the link to the show: http://www.history.com/shows/vikings
I'm not sure how many episodes are available, but I know the most recent ones are there.

I'm really enjoying the show. It's well written, the actors are solid, the story is intriguing and the scenery will take your breath away. The main character's name is real, meaning there was a Viking man in recorded history named Ragnor Lothbrok, but beyond that it's all fiction.

With that said, they have paid amazing detail to many aspects of Viking life. From farm equipment to the dragon boats, their costumes and hair to how they structure their village and families, is all very accurate to historical records.

I recommend this show.

Oh, that's new! Never had audio telling me 'this content is not available' before. Normally it's just written down instead.

Being in the UK, I hadn't heard about the show until this thread, but I shall keep an eye out for it now.

I try not to get caught up in this. Once you point out the historical "accuracies," (Lagertha, shield maidens, human sacrifice) some beaker will pipe in with the wiki cut & paste about how much it's not. (communal living... ah, I don't even want to list any)

I'm looking at it as a viking fantasy, which puts it in a company of one. They probably could have half-assed it and I'd still be loving it, and yet it's really well done. Characters have spoken both Old Norse and (I think) Anglo-Saxon, in the midst of splitting skulls! I love it.

It's from an album called Fever Ray by an artist with the same name, I have only listened to a couple songs from it but so far it's not bad.
If you already knew this then nevermind.

It's a really good show,Ragnor looks truly pissed.Next week should be fun.

Michele | 1154 comments I saw the first one and liked it. I'm recording all of it on my DVR and plan to have a marathon at some point.

message 17: by Thane (new)

Thane | 476 comments I couldn't get through the first episode, glad to hear it gets better. Interestingly, Baen Books has started a new podcast and they ripped it apart as far as historical accuracy. One person they talked to is a Viking reenactment...guy. Reenactor? Spellcheck claims that's not a real world. Hah.

Serendi | 848 comments Spellcheck claims that's not a real world.

Sorry, but this typo reminds me of a story idea I had once where the protag is a world processor for a reality management firm...

message 19: by Firstname (new)

Firstname Lastname | 488 comments I'm liking it, but there are a few things that break my suspension of disbelief.

A: full size horses. AFAIK, there were no full size (in the modern sense of generally over 14 hands) horses used in Denmark, Norway or Iceland in the 8th century. Even today the Icelandic "horse" is pony-sized. It's not as though Fjord horses are hard to find, either. Sloppy due diligence.
B: The lead character's eyes are his normal greenish-hazel most of the time. Only when the dramatic music starts do they suddenly turn a pixellated Adriatic blue. Fail.

Thank you so much Erin! I just opened it at work (poor idea) but I'll be sending it to myself to check it out later on this evening. Thank you!

message 22: by Brandt (last edited Apr 04, 2013 09:06AM) (new)

Brandt Have seen the first 4 episodes..
Its a bit misleading that its made by the history channel and it says "History" in large letters in the corner, but other than that, when viewed purely as a fantasy series, i guess its okay.. I don´t think i´ll stick with it though, the "villains" are pretty obvious and one-sided, and the conflict seems very predictable.. I hope it surprises me..

In many ways it reminds me of Camelot, http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1672189/?... ..

Hah! I didn't even catch that! Awesome idea. Anyway, maybe I'll give the first ep another chance, sounds like it's pretty popular.
