I definitely think a husband should know how to do housekeeping stuff too. I don't believe in this is a man's job, this is a woman's job. I know some jobs require more strength than others, so men might do them better, but otherwise I think it should be 50/50 and a partnership. I don't think any man should expect this wife to wait on him, unless he's willing to do the same. I have no problem pampering my husband out of love, but not because it's a woman's role.

Oh yes! They did show Double Indemnity a day ago or so. Always great to see. I'm going to check out the schedule to see what's coming up. Thanks for the tip! So that's why they're showing a lot of good stuff this week.

Btw, have you guys seen Todd Browning's Freaks? I've been curious to see it but I remember when I was younger, my brother saw it and said it was rather disturbing even for a film of it's time. So I'm a bit squeamish. Lol.

Thoughts?

I saw that it has a scene on the scariest movie moments and some pretty tough characters who commented said it freaked them out or made them cringe. You might be tougher than I am, but I'm definitely going to avoid that one. Just my thoughts.

Eek. I may bypass this one. Thanks, Danielle.

I'm screening myself a lot these days before I see movies especially after seeing stuff like Pride and Glory. That movie disturbed me to no end especially one scene that hits past my viewing acceptance level. I don't like seeing children and innocents exploited or hurt in the news much less in my entertainment viewing.

Colin Farrell, Edward Norton and Jon Voight star. Seemed like a good cast and story on the surface dealing with corrupt cops and there was an IR marriage between Norton and Carmen Ejogo but the material was just too much.

I gotcha.

One of my low tolerances is excessive injustices and/or force against people who can't fend for themselves in one way or another. It's something that's been a soft spot with me since I was wee one and it's something I can't tolerate even today. It's a movie and all, true, but this movie in particular mirrors some real life events that have happened in recent years and sadly those people can't just go home and hang their hats forgetting the day so they can unwind. It stays with them and I considered that which is why it affected me so much on a psychological level.

Unfortunately, I see too much of this kind of power tripping that mirrors real life and knowing my personality type (INFJ and HSP all the way!) I know when my brain needs a break and what it can and can't take before it turns into an overloaded mush. I'm just speaking for myself when I say I don't want to get to the point where nothing fazes me because that's a dangerous kind of mentality imho.

Folks in my old classes would be shocked to hear me talk about movies like this because I'm a huge fan of film and of behind the scenes movie work since I strive to make my own films some day soon. One of the awesome and yet strange things about filmmaking is how close to real life commentary it can get especially with how far the content pushes today.

I can see where you're coming from Eugenia, but I think I am more along the lines of Rae. The intent behind the acts of violence and cruelty is what disturbs me. I don't like seeing gore in movies because it gets recorded in my brain and I can't turn it off, but mainly it's seeing humans perpetruate cruel acts against others is what bothers me. Even in fiction, it's still bad because I know that probably did happen in real life. That's why I didn't go into law enforcement. I don't have that kind of mettle or heart.
I work with blood and guts every day in my field. Most of the time I doesn't bother me that much. Some things I have seen have really hurt me but I have to keep moving and fighting the good fight. Life is ugly and cruel. That's why I like to escape to the fantasy world with movies and books. I'll watch some tv shows that have people solving murders and crimes, but the crucial element is that good wins. I like action movies for the stunts and chase scenes and the art of the fighting, not for seeing people die horribly. In fact, most movies that have people dying in awful ways generally don't make it on my favorite movie lists (there are a few exceptions depending on how it was shot). Some directors go for shock value and the thrill of gratutitous violence. They are typically not my favorite directors. I like the action directors that are stylish and focus on the artistic elements of an action scene such as John Woo, Luc Besson, Michael Bay, Dominic Sena, Len Wiseman (although he can have a few gory moments). When I enjoy horror, it's usually classical with the focus on the horror of the unseen or the light psychological approach (not serial killers or such). I like Hitchcock for some of his approaches to terror).

Anyhoo, I consider myself a serious movie buff, but I realize that not all movies are for me or for my tastes such as: slasher movies, disturbing/subversive movies, gory horror movies, serial killer, and generally gangster movies.

message 76: by new_user (new)

new_user It annoys me when the violence is gratuitous or for the purpose of shock value. I really dislike Tarantino for that reason.

I don't particularly care for disturbing moments unless the film is a social comment, which is why I was interested in Pride and Glory as a look at cop ethics. The violence, etc., is meant to demonstrate the depths they've sunk to (assuming it's committed by the cops in the movie). I have seen, heard, and read some bad things, and unfortunately the real things that people do are much worse. Stranger than fiction, right...

I think sometimes the "clean" violence in pop action movies might be a worse influence on children because it doesn't show the consequences of the violence. I think the only movie I can watch like that, other than the Transporter movies (because you know we don't watch that for the fight scenes, LOL) is Tony Jaa's movies because the entire film is just a display of his skill. That man can fight (Muay Thai). It's amazing to watch him.

I would never try imply you are a heartless wench. If anything I am putting myself down because I can't handle stuff in movies. As weird as it sounds, to me isn't not just a movie. The reason I say that is that it stays in my brain long after I see it. It affects my emotional/mental level and brings me down. That's why I have to be careful what I watch. I am not good at turning stuff off. I am a thinker/brooder by nature.

Good point about stylizing violence. As and adult I can handle it and know it's not real and shouldn't glorify violence. Kids might not get that. Most of the action movies I like I don't think are really suitable for young kids.

message 83: by PT (new)

PT (spinsterpt) | 319 comments Speaking of things affecting kids differently, I have a story. I used to take my little cousin to see Disney movie until she asked me to stop. When I asked her why, she said, "They're scary and give me bad dreams." She told me that too much bad stuff happens. When I really thought about it, she was absolutely right. There are elements of violence, death, and/or bad guys in most Disney films. I just thought they were cute cartoons.

message 88: by new_user (new)

new_user LOL. They have even less decision-making skills before that stage, Eugenia. They haven't developed an independent moral compass before puberty so they're very much swayed by any wind, so to speak, LOL.

new_user Lonestarpt wrote: "What's formal operational stage?"

Sorry, Shunda, I missed your message. I don't know if you've ever heard of the Swiss psychologist Piaget? He was very influential in child psychology and he basically proposed four stages of child development. It's at the formal operational stage (around 12 years old) when kids develop the ability to think about abstract concepts, logic, etc. Until then, they have trouble with abstract concepts, separating out a person from an action, for example.
