The beginning of my life, in my opinion.
I like to say that this is the book that changed my life, because when I picked it up, it opened up my world emensley. To one of books, literature, fandoms, goodreads and ultimately, some really awesome people I've met through it.
As the first book in the epic fantasy series, we are introduced to the wonderfully weaved characters.
Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley, Draco Malfoy, Albus Dumbledore, Severus Snape and Rubeus Hagrid are among them. Throughout the series we continue to grow with them through their separate and amazing Journies. I've always liked to say that they're my best friends for life.
No matter what, this incredible book never loses it's charm. I can't even say what it means to me.

Great comment! This made me tear up a bit! I completely agree with you! These chracters stay with you, no matter what you do or where you go! :D
D'aw, thanks!! That's so sweet of you!
I agree. They're fantastic.
I agree. They're fantastic.
Once upon a time, a little girl called Shahdia went to the library at when visiting her grandpa and checked out a book called Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. (Yes, I'm British. So what?) My life was changed by a boy who looked exactly like his father but had his mother's eyes and his beautifully written adventures.
I first discovered Harry's world at the age of seven. In that time, I was just beginning to read wonderfully long books, and as I was a fast reader I finished the books quickly; or would have, had I wanted to. It took me two months, when it could have taken me a month and a half, because I wanted to relieve every moment of this magical world.
Hogwarts is my second home, the place I always go to when I am upset, a place of magic and mystery. When I am upset with the world I live in, I enter Harry's world, and I always feel better again. Because I just love Hogwarts.
I have followed Harry until the very end, cried with Hermione when Ron left, identified with Ron's fear of spiders (when I was seven, I had a terrible case of arachnophobia), laughed at Neville's clumsiness, hated Voldemort and his followers from the bottom of my heart, cried at the deaths and blatantly refused to admit that the story that had left me in awe was over. I read every word, every syllable, every letter. I have memorized the first line of all the books (the first paragraph of the Philosopher's Stone) and even designed my own theme park to do with the Wizarding World.
My favourite characters are Snape and Luna.
The worst deaths were Sirius, Snape and Dobby. And Hedwig, of course.
My favourite book is...I can't choose between Deathly Hallows and Prisoner of Azkaban. Half Blood Prince used to be my favourite, though.
Voldemort, my heart pumps custard for you.
These books were my childhood. Harry Potter is a major part of my life. It's what got me reading. I pulled my seven-year-old self through every page. And I am proud to say that I am a true Potterhead. And the series may be over, but Harry and his friends will always be alive in our hearts. The heart of a Potterhead.
**Note** The non-italics bit was copy-pasted from the Fandoms, Ships and Fangirling group.

Aged seven/eight, I began reading the books. I am so glad I did. I didn't stop reading them and finished the series in two weeks. I was very disappointed that it was over and didn't know what to read next, but I realised something; it wasn't over. There were still two or three movies to be released.
Goodreads wouldn't allow for enough characters to describe why I love Harry Potter, but I do. And that's what counts.
I've read the series well over fourteen times - I've lost count - seen the movies numerous times too; visited the ACTUAL sets in Leavesden Studios, London; eaten a Chocolate Frog (I got the Albus Dumbledore trading card) and Bertie Botts Every Flavour Beans, even the foul-tasting ones.
As long as there are people who will still laugh, cry, smile and frown with Harry, then it will never be over. No matter what new fandom comes along, there will only be one Harry Potter.

I agree. It will NEVER be over. I've proclaimed my love for Harry everywhere. Even in my monthly column in the news paper.

And in the newspaper? That's so cool! :) I've been in my local paper on a few occasions too, but only pictures. Was that when you won NaNiWriMo? (Which is also crazily cool, by the way :D))
:D I had a guy say to me that Harry Potter was over once and I just walked away in a daze.
No, but thanks! :) I have my own monthly column! :)

Have you ever visited Mugglenet.com? If not, you should. There's a section entitled 'Wall of Shame' and it's hilarious. It features 'hater's' emails sent to the site. On person says, "I'm Emily Watson and I play Hermione in Harry Pottera" and a bunch of stuff about how the website is terrible.
... And yes, you read right. EMILY Watson.

I sleep with the first, third, fourth and seven books, my favorite installments.

I really wish Hogwarts was real and we could live there and listen to The Tales of Beedle the Bard from wizard and witches .... aah <3

You can no longer call yourself a nerd if you don't. You hear?
Fine, but a fandom nerd who hasn't read Harry Potter? That's a little unacceptable.

But you've seen the movies, right?
Okay, so there's some stuff not spoiled yet.
Sadness. I want you to know nothing. I watched the first movie before I read the books, but then read them all.
I don't know how to describe how amazing this series is and how amazing this book is. Why four stars if it is so amazing? I do truly love this book, the book that started out the most magical and amazing series in all of this entire world (in my opinion) but I have to admit that it isn't my favourite. The first book wasn't as good as the rest of the series, I admit it. But that is only because the first book was a little too childish for me and I believe that it was for most other people. It was too easy to guess what was going to happen and everything was just a little too happy for my taste. But it was still fantastic book at it got my heart racing. I was excited through the whole book, the ending didn't even drag and bore me at all.

OMG when I first read this book in Fourth Grade I LOVED IT! I have reread the Hp series over 10 times and I never get tired of it <3333333

Agreed!

It is amazing to read through these comments and see how many lives this series has changed, no matter our age, gender, race, or location. Because, for us, Harry Potter isn't just a series - it's a feeling inside all of us. It's how we grew up, from elementary school through college. It's the place we run to when we are afraid. It's the friend we turn to when we are lonely. It's the shoulder we cry on when we are heartbroken. It's the smile we look for when we need hope. It's the warm embrace we crave when we are homesick. It's what we know as being happy, being loved, being motivated to be the best person we can be. Its a fierce determination to persist against all odds, to come out victorious, and to make as many right decisions along the way as we can. From the moment we picked up that first book, it's where we feel safe; it's where we call home. And the best part is that this series, this feeling, will never leave us. It will stay with us. Always.
♥

My family went through some tough times after that with mental illness being involved quite heavily. I used to use the books as a way of escaping some of the things that happened around at that time. I didn't think anything of the things that were going on really - I thought everyone's families argued a lot and shouted and screamed for no good reason. But then my dad would read Harry Potter to me, and where he finished for the night my imagination would take off. It helped me get through and survive - I did have a brilliant childhood (though admittedly a little strange when I would blame a thunderstorm on Draco (who I said ordered them)).
So, here's to the magic, the mayhem and the excitement, and to the idea that doing something as simple as opening up the cover on a book, could change your world and the way you see it utterly and completely. And here's to us, the Harry Potter fans who will goes our whole lives through, living our lives with the knowledge that no matter how dark the night may become. There is always a way to see the light again.
:-)

I started to read it when I was six, I started going to school and the book was from a friend. Her mother read it to her, and she liked it so she gave it to me. I started to practise reading with this book and on easter I read the whole book! In the next weeks I read 2-4, I think it must have been in 2002? I didn't just read them, I lived them, and I couldn't wait for my 11th birthday because I really really waited for my letter... I remember every time when I was sick, my father and my mother had a discussion or I just felt lonely, I went into my room and read the books over and over again. I started a list one time, when I was about 14, at this stage I had read all the books about 16 times.
When The Order of the Phoenix was released, I rode my bike (and I hate biking) to get the book from our bookstore the same day (we didn't have midnight releases) but in this time, my sister, my father and my sister read faster than me so I had to wait until they all finished the book before I read it.
It all changed with number six and seven, I read them first because everyone knew that this books meant all to me. I spent my day cleaning my room and when I finished I sat down on my bed and read the whole book!!
When I fnished book 7 I cried... But it wasn't so worse because I still had the movies!! And I'm really glad that 7.2. was such a good movie (in my opinion almost the best from the series). I went there with my sister and after the movie finished I didn't cry, I just couldn't speak, I didn't say anything for some hours, because I just realized that my childhood was over... It was in 2011 so I was 16 years old. But then I came home and just started to read it all over again. And I guess we all know that Harry Potter will always bring us back to our childhood!! I'm 19 years old and I think, I know that I wouldn't be the same if I had never read Harry Potter.
One example how Harry Potter helped me: This year, I spent 7 months in New Zealand, on the other side of the earth and of course you get homesick sometimes. And one time I really had a horrible homesick I found Harry Potter in a book exchange and you won't believe how much it helped me!!
Oh, and I'm still waiting for my letter!! I'm sure it will arrive one day, I know it...

Now THAT is a run-on sentence... O.o

i read hp 1 when i was 7 hp has greatly influenced my life and my biggest dream is to be an auoror

It really is amazing how attached you can get to a book series that was pretty much your entire childhood. The books almost seemed to grow up with you, too, as the subjects got more complex and adult.
A whole generation grew up with Harry Potter, and now we're super-attached and nostalgic about everything harry Potter.
