The beginning of my life, in my opinion.
I like to say that this is the book that changed my life, because when I picked it up, it opened up my world emensley. To one of books, literature, fandoms, goodreads and ultimately, some really awesome people I've met through it.
As the first book in the epic fantasy series, we are introduced to the wonderfully weaved characters.
Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley, Draco Malfoy, Albus Dumbledore, Severus Snape and Rubeus Hagrid are among them. Throughout the series we continue to grow with them through their separate and amazing Journies. I've always liked to say that they're my best friends for life.
No matter what, this incredible book never loses it's charm. I can't even say what it means to me.

Once upon a time, a little girl called Shahdia went to the library at when visiting her grandpa and checked out a book called Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. (Yes, I'm British. So what?) My life was changed by a boy who looked exactly like his father but had his mother's eyes and his beautifully written adventures.

I first discovered Harry's world at the age of seven. In that time, I was just beginning to read wonderfully long books, and as I was a fast reader I finished the books quickly; or would have, had I wanted to. It took me two months, when it could have taken me a month and a half, because I wanted to relieve every moment of this magical world.
Hogwarts is my second home, the place I always go to when I am upset, a place of magic and mystery. When I am upset with the world I live in, I enter Harry's world, and I always feel better again. Because I just love Hogwarts.
I have followed Harry until the very end, cried with Hermione when Ron left, identified with Ron's fear of spiders (when I was seven, I had a terrible case of arachnophobia), laughed at Neville's clumsiness, hated Voldemort and his followers from the bottom of my heart, cried at the deaths and blatantly refused to admit that the story that had left me in awe was over. I read every word, every syllable, every letter. I have memorized the first line of all the books (the first paragraph of the Philosopher's Stone) and even designed my own theme park to do with the Wizarding World.
My favourite characters are Snape and Luna.
The worst deaths were Sirius, Snape and Dobby. And Hedwig, of course.
My favourite book is...I can't choose between Deathly Hallows and Prisoner of Azkaban. Half Blood Prince used to be my favourite, though.
Voldemort, my heart pumps custard for you.
These books were my childhood. Harry Potter is a major part of my life. It's what got me reading. I pulled my seven-year-old self through every page. And I am proud to say that I am a true Potterhead. And the series may be over, but Harry and his friends will always be alive in our hearts. The heart of a Potterhead.

Ciara | 144 comments My Harry Potter journey began when I was five or six and I watched Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban at the cinema. I loved every minute of it and straight away bought the first two movies on DVD to watch, along with the third as soon as it was released.

Aged seven/eight, I began reading the books. I am so glad I did. I didn't stop reading them and finished the series in two weeks. I was very disappointed that it was over and didn't know what to read next, but I realised something; it wasn't over. There were still two or three movies to be released.
Goodreads wouldn't allow for enough characters to describe why I love Harry Potter, but I do. And that's what counts.

I've read the series well over fourteen times - I've lost count - seen the movies numerous times too; visited the ACTUAL sets in Leavesden Studios, London; eaten a Chocolate Frog (I got the Albus Dumbledore trading card) and Bertie Botts Every Flavour Beans, even the foul-tasting ones.

As long as there are people who will still laugh, cry, smile and frown with Harry, then it will never be over. No matter what new fandom comes along, there will only be one Harry Potter.

I agree. It will NEVER be over. I've proclaimed my love for Harry everywhere. Even in my monthly column in the news paper.

Ciara | 144 comments Totlly :)

And in the newspaper? That's so cool! :) I've been in my local paper on a few occasions too, but only pictures. Was that when you won NaNiWriMo? (Which is also crazily cool, by the way :D))

message 9: by [deleted user] (new)

:D I had a guy say to me that Harry Potter was over once and I just walked away in a daze.

No, but thanks! :) I have my own monthly column! :)

Ciara | 144 comments That's awesome! :)

Have you ever visited Mugglenet.com? If not, you should. There's a section entitled 'Wall of Shame' and it's hilarious. It features 'hater's' emails sent to the site. On person says, "I'm Emily Watson and I play Hermione in Harry Pottera" and a bunch of stuff about how the website is terrible.

... And yes, you read right. EMILY Watson.

Emily?? D: I'm going now.

message 12: by Annabelle (new)

Annabelle I barely read the Harry Potter series this year because as a small child i liked to rebel against my sister in anyway that i could, which included refusing to read the books she recommended :) but at age 13 i got over myself and read the entire series in only 2 weeks, which i thoroughly regretted when i neared the end and realized that the moment i finished the books i no longer had a purpose in life, haha. I literally slept with the entire series on my bed for months after i finished the series because i simply didn't want to let go. My little sister even told me i was crying out loud in my sleep muttering "no" on the night i had a dream about Lily dying, and Snape showing up at the scene afterwards... But i'm mostly normal now :)

message 13: by [deleted user] (new)

I sleep with the first, third, fourth and seven books, my favorite installments.

message 14: by Annabelle (new)

Annabelle I would read stories from The Tales of Beedle the Bard like every night before I went to sleep haha because it was just a short and easy way for me to keep living in the magical world XD

message 15: by Christiana (new)

Christiana (nana-reads) | 1 comments Annabelle, I do that too :)
I really wish Hogwarts was real and we could live there and listen to The Tales of Beedle the Bard from wizard and witches .... aah <3

Regina (reginadurben) | 1 comments I first read this book in Jr. High, despite the fact that I wasn't much of a reader at the time. I absolutely loved it and it became one of my favorite books. Now, as an adult, and avid reader, I am reading the whole series for the first time, and I am kicking myself for not reading the rest of them years ago! I love these books so much!! I think I will be re-reading them over and over again! :)

Fine, but a fandom nerd who hasn't read Harry Potter? That's a little unacceptable.

message 23: by Elevetha (new)

Elevetha | 2183 comments Maybe. But I don't blame myself. Personally, I think it'll be all the more brilliant because of the waiting.

message 24: by [deleted user] (new)

But you've seen the movies, right?

message 25: by Elevetha (new)

Elevetha | 2183 comments The first 6. I haven't seen 7 and 7.5 yet.

I don't know how to describe how amazing this series is and how amazing this book is. Why four stars if it is so amazing? I do truly love this book, the book that started out the most magical and amazing series in all of this entire world (in my opinion) but I have to admit that it isn't my favourite. The first book wasn't as good as the rest of the series, I admit it. But that is only because the first book was a little too childish for me and I believe that it was for most other people. It was too easy to guess what was going to happen and everything was just a little too happy for my taste. But it was still fantastic book at it got my heart racing. I was excited through the whole book, the ending didn't even drag and bore me at all.

message 37: by Adrienne (new)

Adrienne Hey everyone :) I'm new to this group, but it seems like as far as obsessing over Harry Potter goes, this is a good thread to start in.. *deep breath*

It is amazing to read through these comments and see how many lives this series has changed, no matter our age, gender, race, or location. Because, for us, Harry Potter isn't just a series - it's a feeling inside all of us. It's how we grew up, from elementary school through college. It's the place we run to when we are afraid. It's the friend we turn to when we are lonely. It's the shoulder we cry on when we are heartbroken. It's the smile we look for when we need hope. It's the warm embrace we crave when we are homesick. It's what we know as being happy, being loved, being motivated to be the best person we can be. Its a fierce determination to persist against all odds, to come out victorious, and to make as many right decisions along the way as we can. From the moment we picked up that first book, it's where we feel safe; it's where we call home. And the best part is that this series, this feeling, will never leave us. It will stay with us. Always.

message 38: by Bex (new)

Bex (daydreamingonmars) I started reading Harry Potter when I was about 5. My dad was reading the first book when I saw him on the sofa, and it looked interesting so I asked "Can you read that to me?" His response was that he'd only read it to me if he thought that it was appropriate for me at that age. We started a few weeks later. Being so you gat the time that I first read them meant that the characters in the book became very real to me, and I fell in love with a book for the first time in my life. I still have the copy of the first book that my Dad gave to me; it's falling apart at the seams, the first 45 pages loose but I love it all the same.

My family went through some tough times after that with mental illness being involved quite heavily. I used to use the books as a way of escaping some of the things that happened around at that time. I didn't think anything of the things that were going on really - I thought everyone's families argued a lot and shouted and screamed for no good reason. But then my dad would read Harry Potter to me, and where he finished for the night my imagination would take off. It helped me get through and survive - I did have a brilliant childhood (though admittedly a little strange when I would blame a thunderstorm on Draco (who I said ordered them)).

So, here's to the magic, the mayhem and the excitement, and to the idea that doing something as simple as opening up the cover on a book, could change your world and the way you see it utterly and completely. And here's to us, the Harry Potter fans who will goes our whole lives through, living our lives with the knowledge that no matter how dark the night may become. There is always a way to see the light again.

:-)

message 40: by Elisa (new)

Elisa | 57 comments It's the same for me, I really started crying when I read all those comments, and each story. They are all different stories, but it is still the same: we all grew up with Harry Potter and there will always be a special place in our heart for Hogwarts.

I started to read it when I was six, I started going to school and the book was from a friend. Her mother read it to her, and she liked it so she gave it to me. I started to practise reading with this book and on easter I read the whole book! In the next weeks I read 2-4, I think it must have been in 2002? I didn't just read them, I lived them, and I couldn't wait for my 11th birthday because I really really waited for my letter... I remember every time when I was sick, my father and my mother had a discussion or I just felt lonely, I went into my room and read the books over and over again. I started a list one time, when I was about 14, at this stage I had read all the books about 16 times.
When The Order of the Phoenix was released, I rode my bike (and I hate biking) to get the book from our bookstore the same day (we didn't have midnight releases) but in this time, my sister, my father and my sister read faster than me so I had to wait until they all finished the book before I read it.
It all changed with number six and seven, I read them first because everyone knew that this books meant all to me. I spent my day cleaning my room and when I finished I sat down on my bed and read the whole book!!
When I fnished book 7 I cried... But it wasn't so worse because I still had the movies!! And I'm really glad that 7.2. was such a good movie (in my opinion almost the best from the series). I went there with my sister and after the movie finished I didn't cry, I just couldn't speak, I didn't say anything for some hours, because I just realized that my childhood was over... It was in 2011 so I was 16 years old. But then I came home and just started to read it all over again. And I guess we all know that Harry Potter will always bring us back to our childhood!! I'm 19 years old and I think, I know that I wouldn't be the same if I had never read Harry Potter.
One example how Harry Potter helped me: This year, I spent 7 months in New Zealand, on the other side of the earth and of course you get homesick sometimes. And one time I really had a horrible homesick I found Harry Potter in a book exchange and you won't believe how much it helped me!!
Oh, and I'm still waiting for my letter!! I'm sure it will arrive one day, I know it...

L.Y. Levand (lylevand) | 1907 comments I read the first book when I was eleven. I'd seen the trailers for the movie, and didn't have any interest at first, but then my younger brother brought it home from the library. He made the mistake of leaving it on the couch one day while I was bored, and I was hooked at once. I devoured the next three, and then had to wait what seemed like forever for number five, six, and seven.

It really is amazing how attached you can get to a book series that was pretty much your entire childhood. The books almost seemed to grow up with you, too, as the subjects got more complex and adult.

A whole generation grew up with Harry Potter, and now we're super-attached and nostalgic about everything harry Potter.
