Philip Dodd (philipdodd) | 31 comments Hello, everyone. My name is Philip Dodd, author of Angel War.I am sixty one, have a degree in English literature from Newcastle University, and I have been writing songs, stories and poems since I was twelve. I like to read the works of Shakespeare, John Milton, Mervyn Peake, Virginia Woolf, Michelle Lovric, Jules Verne, H.G. Wells, Thomas Hardy, John Fowles, Emily Bronte, T.S. Eliot, Alexandre Dumas, J.R.R. Tolkien, Charles Dickens and Homer. I am most inspired in my writing by the King James Version of the Holy Bible. As far as television is concerned, I enjoy watching Match of the Day and the Big Bang Theory, which I think is the funniest comedy series ever.

Lilo,

Thanks for the welcome and the recommendation. 30 cats would be quite a handful. I only have two that i rescued from a local animal shelter. Thanks again.

message 454: by Katy (new)

Katy (katyas-69) I would love to have 30 cats, but ... there is no way I could do it here! 3 fills the place up enough! But if I had a really big house and someone else to keep the litter cleaned... that would be AWESOME....

message 455: by Adele (new)

Adele (redefiningsin) | 1 comments Hi everyone. I'm new to Goodreads and hope that, as it says 'Introduce Yourself', I'm introducing myself in the right place and it's not just for authors!

My name is Adele and I am currently reading James Herbert's 'Ash'. So sad when he died as he is one of my favorite authors. My next read is going to be Dan Brown's Inferno.

Book wise I am a fan of horror, science fiction, paranormal, mystery, suspence, thriller, crime and the occasional dabble into the erotic genre (nothing Mills and Boon, more like Karen Monings 'Fever' series).

Favorite authors are Tom Holland, James Herbert as mentioned above, Dan Brown, Stephen King, Scott Mariani to name a few.

Always after a new book to read and welcome any recommendations.

Hi Katy, I do have a big house for our cats to mess up and 18 acres to go with it, and we are bordering BLM (= federal lands) which our cats also consider their own. And last not least, I have a dear, sweet husband, who says he has studied physics in order to be qualified to do litter boxes. Taking all this into consideration, I would consider it immoral NOT to have 30 rescue cats.

message 458: by Katy (new)

Katy (katyas-69) Wonderful! As long as you have safe land (away from roads!) for them to wander! Sounds like my parents' ranch; when I was growing up we always had between 20 and 30 cats. I know if I had that much room, I would definitely be taking 'em all in as well!

What most interests you about Wales? Celtic heritage in general?

message 462: by Katy (new)

Katy (katyas-69) When I was 10 I started reading The Dark is Rising series by Susan Cooper and was captivated by the descriptions of the land and of the legends and lore. It started my lifelong fantasy with Celtic myths and legends, and with fairy lore.

F.J. Hansen (fjhansen) | 22 comments Greetings.

My initials in my username stand for Franz Josef, but you all may call me Franz. I hail from Fremont, California. For the moment, I do seasonal work for a bank. I work five months out of the year, giving me the rest of the time to do what I enjoy--writing.

I grew up around science fiction, so naturally I'm an avid science fiction fan. I love to read it, watch it, write it. I also love dragons when they're not bad as a species, so I also enjoy some fantasy. Although, on the screen, I'll watch just about any genre with a few exceptions.

My favorite book-to-screen would be definitely be How to Train Your Dragon and the spin-off TV series they're making. In fact, they're my favorite movie and TV series period.

Well, that's all for now.

Jayne (ladyjaguar) | 12 comments Hi Everyone

I'm Jayne and my genre is kick ass romance. I was recommended this site by Dianne and because I'm obedient, I had a look and also looked at the RULES section. Curious about the fowl language. (Yes, it really does say that.) Does this mean I can't use the expression "what the cluck?" Just wondering. Anyway, it's great to say hello to you all and I'm looking forward to joining in some interesting discussions very soon!

Hi, Paul! I had an aunt and uncle who used to live in Springfield lo many a year ago. It was there I was first introduced to BATMAN in the 70s... :-)

Hi, Katy,
We are 1/4 mile away from the road; nevertheless, 2 cats got run over during the last 15 years. Most cats we have lost (other than to old age or disease) were assumed to have fallen prey to wildlife. For the last 10 years we have had a special system to let cats in at night but not out again. Ever since this time (knock on wood!) very few cats have gone missing.

I wish, I'd find time to start my writing project "The Cats of Happy Cats Ranch", but not a chance as long as I spend my nights sitting on the computer stumbling around the Goodreads website.

message 475: by Katy (new)

Katy (katyas-69) Haha Lilo - I know, this site takes up way too much of my time, too! Still sounds like a good system. I know out on our ranch we had a bit of a coyote problem with the ones who would go out hunting, but as long as they stayed near, with dogs, it wasn't a problem. We were 4 miles from the main road, but it was a country road and not a lot of traffic.

I have a shelf full and a Kindle full of unread books. I'm a writer of ghost/paranormal and family drama fiction. I'm pretty prolific. By day I'm a hairdresser.

I have a Chinese Crested, Sir Poops-a-lot, and a Malti-poo, Hair Ball. They both hang with me when I'm in a writing adventure.

Nice to meet you. I usuall hang here a little on my days off.

Nice to meet you Bitsy. Two weeks ago, I went to attended the Florida Library Associations conference in Orlando to promote my debut novel.

Funny, too, when I was a kid I either wanted to be a librarian or a writer or both. But I'm a hairdresser gone writer instead.

Hugs and chocolate,
Shelly

message 483: by Carole (new)

Carole P. Roman Thank you for the invitation. My name is Carole P. Roman and I own a business that I run with my family. My son is an author of self help books and dared me to write a book. I then wrote a children's book that turned into a series. ( and won a few awards) As a former social studies teacher, I then wrote a non fiction series about cultures around the world. I have been reading since I was seven, starting with Nancy Drew. Oddly enough, I skipped other YA and went start into adult fiction by the time I was twelve. My whole life was defined by the many books I read growing up and the genres changed as the years went on. My mother introduced me to adult fiction, my brother- thrillers, my friends- whatever was current, but my grandmother in her eighties introduced me to my greatest love- historical romance. I read on average ten to twelve books a week and have never reviewed them, so this is a totally new part of my daily routine.

message 484: by Katy (new)

Katy (katyas-69) Hi, Bitsy, welcome to the group! I always wanted to be a librarian; when I was in college I worked in our library for awhile as a work-study and discovered that all that lovely booksmell also aggravated my asthma, so I had to move to another job after a couple months :-( But I love being around books!

message 485: by Dab10 (new)

Dab10 Dab10 | 8 comments hello all
i go by the pen name dab10 because i would rather embarrass my children personally rather then with something i wrote. I found goodreads when a friend asked me to review her book and she sent me a list of places she posted my review and I saw goodreads and thought that sounds interesting. I read most everything fiction, horror. romance(keep that quite), kids books(I'll blame the kids for that), fantasy, suspense, and the list goes on.
one of my new friends here recommended this group to me i looked and joined. i have three books out and more on the way but i still read lots and lots when i was listing the books I've read i stopped after i realized some of the books were read 20 + years ago but i do plan to finish the list one day. i think I've done enough for an intro ;) but most everything i do i try to do with humor.

Hi Carole, what you wrote about skipping YA fiction made me smile because I skipped it too. Mind you I'm not sure there was any YA fiction back then.

As a life-long reader and recent author I hope you keep writing in all the genres you love. Nice to meet you. :)

message 488: by Carole (new)

Carole P. Roman That was so funny. I have an odd feeling you are right!!! I'm am new to the internet, Goodreads, all this data stuff and feel a bit like Rip Van Winkle, like I missed a whole lot while I was sleeping- only I wasn't sleeping- Just raising kids, taking care of parents, working with my husband, building a business. Tell me what you write- that's the one thing I haven't missed, I read constantly. Everything!!!

Chuck Manson (chuck_manson) | 7 comments Hello everyone,
I think I've been a member of this group for some time and have been on Goodreads for a while, however, I've been very NOT involved in actually writing for several months.
I write mainly Science Fiction, though the only book I've put up on Amazon is contemporary fiction.
currently I'm working on a SF novel set on a steampunk world.

Desperately in need of motivation!

message 490: by Jayne (new)

Jayne (ladyjaguar) | 12 comments Hey Chuck, it's good to meet you. Um, WTF is steampunk? Can you define it for me? I've heard the expression quite a few times recently and can't get a handle on it.

Ditto existential...

message 491: by Chuck (new)

Chuck Manson (chuck_manson) | 7 comments I think it covers many different styles and then some people break it down even further. For my purposes, it's a society that developed steampower (ie: start of the industrial revolution) and then never moved onto gasoline. It's usually characterized by large machinery, zeppelins and slightly Victorian fashions.
A lot is an extension of Jules Verne type of science fiction.

I'm usually a YA reader but I'm the typical girl that loves to read anything as long as it has at least a little bit of romance in it. I spend my night curled up around a book or a kindle with my puppy and get sucked into the world of others through words. I'm glad to be here and meet all of you :)

Same here but I keep rewriting especially after beta readers and editors work over my manuscripts. Selling more would motivate me but there's always NaMaMo if I've spelled it correctly. It's short for Write a novel in November or if you write Speculative Fiction--The Writers of The Future Contest--4 quarters ever year. It's free to enter and I placed in Honorable Mention 5 times but then they starting asking your age and I realized they were looking for younger writers than me.

Also when you don't write--read. Your subconscious may be working for you while you're busy reading. Also read it once for pleasure read it again for how they wrote it and yet again to find the errors. Amazing how many errors even editors miss. Write reviews. I will write some more reviews when it gets too hot to be training the horses with the help of my new assistant.

Katy (katyas-69) Welcome, Genevieve! Sounds like you have a fun job! I had a job once where we developed electronic test-banks for textbooks, and then shipped them out to teachers to help them develop tests. It was an awesome place to work, but then they moved the office 30 miles away from where I lived and I didn't want to commute that far...
