:D Hi Katy, so what are you working as now? I was living in Georgia US, then now Singapore, traveling back and forth.. =.=!!

message 503: by Katy (new)

Katy (katyas-69) Sounds busy, Genevieve! I actually had to stop working 4 years ago due to health problems, but almost two years ago I started doing freelance editing from home, so between that and the reviewing I keep busy enough. I don't bring in a lot of money - barely enough to cover my medical treatment most months - but I enjoy what I'm doing!

Arlene Schindler (arleneschindler) | 5 comments Hi!

Thanks very much for the invitation Christopher. I'm Arlene Schindler and I'm the author of The Last Place She'd Look. My writing explores what’s left unsaid along the edges of conversation, sexual exploration and experience. Women of a certain age become invisible in our culture. But in reality this is the time of life when they become bolder, braver and more adventurous. They’re peaking, and no one is looking. Exploring why they should be noticed, I expose their desires, passions and relationships.

I'm hoping to meet other authors and readers here.

The first novel, out now, is aimed at young adults and is called Arkrealm The Apprentice. The Arkrealm Project book series includes novels for teens, adults and children, picture books for children, plus workbooks and fun non-fiction books for all ages, all under the one umbrella. Families and friends can all share the Arkrealm experience.

Zee Monodee (zee_monodee) | 10 comments Hey everyone!

Pleasure to be here. :)

My name's Zee and I'm a bookholic! Half of that addiction gets directed into my own writing (mainly Indian-culture-based contemporary romance, or small town romances set in England) and the other half is a ravenous devourer of romance, PNR, and chick lit, with the occasional sprinkling of character-driven erotica (Megan Hart comes to mind here).

My fave authors are Susan Mallery, Susan Andersen, Robyn Carr, Sophie Kinsells, Jill Mansell, and Marian Keyes.

Looking forward to meeting ye all! xoxo

message 516: by Katy (new)

Katy (katyas-69) So, a random thought just occurred to me. Does anyone else really dislike that people will listen to assumptions, rumors and lies and spread them around, but never bother to come to the person about whom the assumptions, rumors and lies are being spread and straight-out ask them about it? Or, I dunno, actually do some research to see if it's true? As part of our introductions to each other, we tell one another a bit about ourselves, but I would never just assume because someone told me someone else said blah blah blah that they actually DID say that. So why do so many people fall for this sort of thing?

Do everyone a favor. Do YOURSELF a favor. Do NOT accept rumors and gossip at face value. Do not just accept someone else's word that this is how something has gone down. Actually go out and look into it yourself. Go to the source. Find out what REALLY happened.

Sorry, this is just something that is really bugging me right now...

message 517: by Grace (new)

Grace Hamilton | 50 comments Thanks to D H Nevins for her invite to this illustrious group. On reading many of the previous discussions I could see a little of myself in each, it was a little eerie but exciting at the same time. I started reading 59years ago on a virtually isolated farm in the middle of the bush, the first book I opened was the encyclopedia, it had pretty pictures and I soon learnt to read it and was annoying everyone with facts and figures. It was in the late 50's that I started to go to the library, in the nearest largeish town, once a week, at that time children were only able to borrow one book a week. I developed such a hunger for books that I would read anything, comics, newspapers, magazines...anything. My favorites as a kid were, The Famous Five and anything Enid Blyton but I progressed to YA type books by the time I started high school. Books that have remained in my memory for all time are ones I generally don't enjoy reading, The Third Eye, by Lopsang Rampa in 1968, and The Contiki and Ra Expeditions by Thor Heyndahll. Over the years I have read many books by many different authors and of this year have commence to write a book myself, never having tried before I'm not too sure how it will go as a love of reading doesn't always equate with the ability to be a mediocre writer, but its getting there. Thanks once again in allowing me to become part of this wonderful group of people....Grace

DJ Harris (dj6ual) | 1 comments My name is DJ Harris (aka DJ6ual). My favorite author is Christopher Moore, but lately I have been reading a lot of Aaron Powell .

I tend to be drawn to post-apocalyptic, patriotic, and humor books, but I will read (and review) just about anything!

I have an eReader (Kindle) but I hate it! I love the feeling of holding a real book as I thumb through the pages and go on a new adventure with the turn of the page! I don't think I'll ever be a big fan of all this new book technology.

I love making new friends, so everyone can feel free to add me if they like. If you need a review, a vote, a comment, or anything else just let me know and I'll do my best to help you out.

For more information on me, or my blog, stop by my GoodReads page and check out my profile.

I.S. Anderson (Eman1272) | 3 comments Hello all.

My name is Ian and I am new to the group. I have had a good reads account for about 2 years now. I am an author who has published 3 books.

I like to read anything fantasy including, Urban, High, and dark. I try to read a mix of Indie books as web as traditionally published works.

message 520: by Katy (new)

Katy (katyas-69) Welcome, Grace! My husband is a huge fan of Thor Heyerdahll. Good luck with your writing; I know several people who do freelance editing (including myself) so let me know if you need any help there.

Welcome, DJ! I LOVE my e-readers - I love being able to carry my entire library in my purse if I want :-) I still enjoy a solid book in my hands, but with the arthritis that's developing in my thumb, it's painful to hold hardcovers nowadays.

Welcome, Ian! I love Urban Fantasy, especially the darker stuff.

Hope you all enjoy the group!

Once you've done everything you want to do, it's best to find a writing group and/or some beta readers first, then move on to content editing, then line editing, and finally proofreading. Preferably with different people at each step to have as many eyes on it as possible. Best of luck!

message 524: by Katy (new)

Katy (katyas-69) Good to know, Brianna! I have a small stable of people to whom I refer people if I'm booked too far out for folks who contact me, always nice to add another name to provide some choice. Be in touch if you'd like me to add you to my list.

message 526: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi all, I'm brand new to Goodreads and the group, and I'm looking forward to seeing how it will change my reading habits. I love how things have changed for the better in the last few years for book addicts. Remember how you used to go to a bookstore, and pick from what was there? Now it feels like every book in the world is accessible, instantly. Of course, the disadvantage of that is that the choice can be overwhelming, which makes recommendations from like-minded souls hugely helpful. Actually, now I think about it, a more serious disadvantage is how easy it is to shop for books, and shop, and shop...

Does anyone find that they read differently when they know they're going to post a review? I posted my first one today, and you'd have thought it was my first novel, I got so antsy about it. I definitely thought more about what I was reading, but it made me nervous to express an opinion, because until now reading has always been very private. How will I cope with interacting with real people in the real world? (More wine, maybe?)

Anyway, I'm happy to join the community and get the chance to get to know you all better.

message 527: by Katy (new)

Katy (katyas-69) Hi, Elaine! Welcome to Goodreads, and welcome to the group!

I know I certainly read more mindfully now that I post reviews for most books. I've become much more critical about things I used to ignore, but I'm also aware of that and try to keep myself from becoming negative! On the plus side, it has helped me refine my tastes to the point where I very rarely choose badly nowadays when it comes to choosing a book, so ... *shrug*

Good luck!

Dorine White | 2 comments Hi, my name is Dorine White. I am a fantasy/sci-fi junky. I write middle grade and YA, in... yep fantasy. I love books! When I was a teenager other kids were outside playing during summer break, I was reading.

message 529: by Danielle (new)

Danielle (drakenfyre75) | 1 comments Thank You much for the group invite. I enjoy reading a mix of books like Horror, Urban Fanstay, YA, Mangas. I prefer physical books over e-readers (please don't hate me for that) I just find it much more fun to read a physcal book, and it's an awesome way to start a conversation with someone about what they are reading. :)

message 530: by Katy (new)

Katy (katyas-69) Welcome, Dorine; I was the same way (still am).

Welcome, Danielle - sounds like we share some interests. And any book lover won't really care how you prefer to read your books - paper books or e-books - but just be happy that you like to read and can talk about books with you. At least that's my opinion on the matter, and we all know my opinion is the only relevant one... ;-) (j/k) I think I mentioned a couple days ago that one of the reasons I now tend to prefer my e-reader is that I have developed significant pain in my left hand and hardcover books, or any books that are at larger than a mass-market paperback, are very difficult for me to hold now. The e-reader is much more comfortable in my hand and I don't have to use my left hand for much other than just holding it. But I still love the smell of books; who doesn't?

Daisha (DaishaMarieKorth) | 3 comments Okay...It was great to be invited to this group. Thank you.
I read as often as I can and love discovering new authors. Reading a lot has taught me to become a better writer and I believe it is an important step in the process.
I write medieval fiction that people can relate to by taking some age old issues in life and creating my own world to take you away. Isn't that more fantasy? No, I just call it medieval fiction. No rules, just drama. :D
It is really nice to meet all of you, I will be checking in!

Harmony Kent (harmonyk) Hello! My name is Harmony Kent, I am a new indie author and an avid reader. I love action/adventure, fantasy/fiction, YA paranormal ... infact I'm open to a wide range of stuff, although not too keen on books that are solely erotica. I loved Stephanie Meyer's the twilight series, but also adored Harry Potter (I know, I'm a sad sad girl). On the other end of the spectrum I have just finished the Tom Gray Series by Alan MacDermott, and thoroughly enjoyed all three. I am fairly knew to GoodReads and wanted to poke my head up over the wall I find it too easy to hide behind and say hi to you all. I currently live near Canterbury in the UK, and as well as all things books I love cardmaking and am learning to play the piano - oh and occasionally I remember to sleep!

Elizabeth Watasin (elizabethwatasin) | 2 comments Hello everyone at Modern Good Reads, I'd like to thank my fellow author Emi Thompson for cluing me into this group. I've been on Goodreads a while as an author but still don't know my way around socially (on Goodreads, that is). I'm an avid non-fiction reader, most all historical subjects dwelling around the Victorian era. Boring to most, but fascinating to me. Currently, Neo-Victorian and Steampunk are my genres of storytelling. Before I ramble further, thanks for having me here!

Cams (thedaydreamreader) | 7 comments Hi y'all! I'm Camille. Currently a senior university student in the Philippines.

I like reading any type of books though I rarely read non-fiction unless it is required. Hoho.

As for movies, I am into horror. I like how it makes me anticipate the next scene and yet still shout due to surprise. Oh and exorcism films creep the heck out of me yet I still love watching them.

Nice to meet ya!
