My TBR list is pretty long and varied but I am always adding more. I like mysteries, thrillers, sci-fi, fantasy, historical, and anything with romance. Maggie Thom (maggiethom) | 7 comments I'm Maggie, I read just about anything that has a good story or a good message. Suspense is my all time favorite (reading and writing), but I also like espionage, fantasy, some science fiction, thrillers, mysteries, romantic suspense, nonfiction - self help... if it's good, I read it.

Heidi Angell (heidiangell) | 131 comments Hello all! So many fun people here!!! Looking forward to getting to know many of you!

My name is Heidi Angell and yes, I am an author... but please don't hold it against me ;)

I think people consider me a hipster (which is just silly, because I can never remember the names of half the stuff I love, and hipsters are all about name-dropping, right?!?!?) But I am most certainly an entertainment junkie!! I have very eclectic tastes and read pretty much anything I can get my hands on that fancies me atm. (as can be seen by my extensive book lists here! Yeah, I'm really bad about updating my reading lists!) I love TV and movies and am currently devouring The Walking dead, as I missed out on that exciting ride at the beginning! I love Anime, and going to cons (I even occasionally dress up!) Music is a bit of an obsession for me and I love all the different genres, because they can match any of my moods. I always have something playing, even if only in my head! I love meeting and getting to know new people, and can almost always find something we like in common, because I am that eclectic! I've found that my friends often don't get along... and this makes me sad.

message 66: by Mandi (new)

Mandi | 1 comments Thanks for the invite! I enjoy reading mostly anything fiction but I'm not crazy about science fiction. Romance, paranormal, erotic, thrillers, and mystery are my kind of books. I welcome new authors because I just love to read.

The things that I dislike when reading... when an item or person has an abundance of descriptions that will cause the book to be an extra 100 pages. My thinking process is... 'Really?! You've got to kidding me. Stop putting me to sleep! I need some action in this book and fast because I just want to put it down to start a different book. Oh, but now I need to finish since I've already started this one.' So thank you all that I've given 4 or 5 stars to! You were very successful in keeping my attention. :)

Oh, I also enjoy audio books too! My favorite series for audio books are Southern Sisters Mystery by Anne George. These were fun and comical to listen to.

Hello!

My name is Marilyn Callan, I am a housewife, who is married to a retired Navy Chief Hospital Corpsman. I have worked briefly in radio, for an FM station KLite KVLT 92.3. I was the Receptionist/Accounts Payable/Receivable/Board operator, running commercial sets.

I also worked in radio via the Internet. I was fortunate that because of my Internet radio position, (Assistant General Manager/D.J./Promotions Director) I was able to interview Angus Clark, and Andrew Ross of Trans-Siberian Orchestra fame. Angus Clark, and Andrew Ross both tour with TSO West. The interview I did, was to promote a CD, for their group DareDevil Squadron..I also had the pleasure of interviewing Doug Tidstrand, who has worked in the film industry, composing music. Doug currently has joined a "Cars" cover band.

I love historical fiction, and I also read nonfiction, as well. Eric Ives, John Guy, Sarah Grist wood, G.J. Meyer, Marion Meade, Helen Rappaport, Alison Weir and Philippa Gregory are some of my favorite authors, but there are of course more authors not in that list, whose work I enjoy, although listing them would make this thread far too lenghty.

I belong to another reading group, which at present has been focusing on the year 1066. I have two books which need to be completed this month, so I will do my very best to keep up with this group.

My favorite queen will always be Eleanor of Aquitaine, and I hold a soft spot for Lady Jane Grey, and thanks to John Guy, Mary: Queen of Scots, as well. I am also fascinated by the Romanovs, and Brian Boru: High king of Ireland. The book of Kells, and the Lindsfarne gospels book also are keen interests to me, too.

I'm Danika. I'm an author, and I'll admit up front I still haven't got a handle on Goodreads. (Sorry!) I obsessively read - any and all genres - generally in waves. (Currently about to jump into Tudor England again.) I also love films, especially odd, offbeat ones.

I love historical fiction when it is done right, the fiction is there to bring the characters to life, not making up a story based on some things I read about "such and such" So many books want to market themselves as historical because it took place in the past. To me, historical needs to have a fair amount of research behind it. But there are so many authors who do historical fiction and it is a bit boring. It is a tough tightrope to walk!

Shawn, they are great tools. I suffer from dis-associative dyslexia, but it didn't show up until high school because my math teacher noticed it. They thought that I had dyscalculia, because I never had trouble in my English classes. I started reading and writing before I ever started school. I learned early on to double check the ones that most often give me trouble d,b,g the whole i before e. To this day, I have to double-check myself.

Hello Heidi,

I could not agree with you more, concerning historical content in historical fiction. I tend to favor the authors who are historians, or have a background in history/research. But sometimes just for fun, I enjoy the historical fiction. I think the important thing is to know when you are reading fact from fiction. Sadly, many people take stock in some of the historical fiction books, which have very little historical fact in the story.

Yup, my kids come home with all sorts of disturbing ideas thanks to some of the books they read. Then they insist "but I read it in a book." and I point out that mommy writes books too, and in most of my books the only truth you will get is how some people interact with others.

Cary Neeper (cary_neeper) | 3 comments Thanks, Christopher. I love the idea of this group, remembering what Donald Maas said in a recent writers conference--that the great, lasting books are those with a powerful story written in beautiful English. I love words and have spent a lifetime working at the craft. Recently I returned to publishing and to the social media world. My scifi is based in the reality of an alternate 21st century solar system with attractive aliens who challenge us with ideas to secure our future--good fodder for book club discussions. What I appreciate about some historical fiction authors, is that they will let you know via blog what had to be filled in. Sharon Kay Penman is awesome, she is well versed, and posts lovely blogs. She and I both focus on Eleanor of Aquitaine.

Brian McKinley | 151 comments Hey all,

I'm Brian and my first novel ANCIENT BLOOD: A NOVEL OF THE HEGEMONY is out for sale. I primarily write horror/urban fantasy, but it's hard to tell sometimes where those genres divide.

Anyway, I love reading in my genre, but also historical fiction. Lately, I haven't had much time between writing and promotion, so I do more TV and movie watching than reading. I don't post a lot, since I find it difficult to keep up with a lot of social media. I hit Facebook and chat with friends regularly, but that's about it. I need to get better at getting out there and being noticed, but honestly, I'd like my work to speak for itself.

Nice to meet you all!

Robert Shaw | 7 comments Hi Chris, thanks for inviting me - and hello all. My name's Robert Shaw but my oldest buddy back in Los Angeles calls me (very appropriately) SpongeBob because I'm currently living at my little sister's house on the south coast of Victoria, Australia. I've written 2 books, a horror story called The Scare and a Young Adult novel called Girlfriend Trouble. I'm now in the middle of my third, called Thunder Rising, a slightly sci-fi tale of how the Old West wasn't, which is taking most of my time right now.

Now that's something we don't see enough of: Heavy Metal novels.

I can't say I write Heavy Metal novels, but does a Jell-O wrestling scene with 70's-80's classic rock count?

Hello and thank you for the invitation. Although I write anything from murder mysteries to children's stories, I've found most success in writing erotica and fantasy. I prefer whimsical to hard core and my best book has yet to be written. I love reading period romances, historical novels, classics and whatever it was you just wrote. I review on a quid pro quo basis only.
