Dvora Treisman I don't care for much contemporary stuff, especially abstractions, but this one is cool.

Heather | 8548 comments I do like abstract, contemporary...not so much. But I agree, Dvora, I really like that one.

message 14: by Lobstergirl (new)

Lobstergirl I believe she begins with a photograph...but I couldn't find a description of her work process after that. Does she paint directly onto the photograph? Or copy it? She uses a palette knife to get thick swaths of paint on, and clearly above she's using some kind of paper as well. I don't find it hugely compelling, but it is interesting.

Dottie Suggs (dottiesuggs) | 23 comments Thank you Lobstergirl for sharing the Nielly work. I went to her site on FB and love what she is doing. There is even a short video of her and a man painting. There are several photos that let you know that she paints from photo images, she draws in the outline on large canvases and then paints with palette knives. Amazing use of color as tones on planes. There are several paintings that I like better than this one, but it is hard to see them all at once.

I've always liked Marden's subtlety with color. He's less brash than many of the other minimalists, there's a sense of quiet that I like with the style.

Cordy Ryman, “Case Study” (2013). Acrylic, shellac, and pencil on wood, 116 x 178 x 26.5 inches.

...When I came upon this two-part, open-frame work, resting in a corner opposite “Rafterweb Scrapwall V2,” I was certain that there was a pink mesh scrim stretched across the reverse side of its vertically slanted intervals of 2x4s. Then I looked again, and thought I was looking at a large sheet of Plexiglas — the negative space behind the wood studs seemed that solid.

When I was finally convinced I was looking at nothing but air, I figured the wall was spray-painted pink, but that also turned out to be an illusion. The color was in fact the ambient reflection of the fluorescent pink paint on the backsides of the wooden supports. In its current configuration (it is not necessarily a corner piece) “Case Study” is more about what is not there than what is there. Somewhere else, it will be entirely different, perhaps repressing its light-induced aura in favor of its skeletal material presence...

Young Women Looking at Japanese Objects, 1869
James Tissot (French 1836-1902)
Oil on canvas
28 x 20 in.
Cincinnati Art Museum

I'm reading a book on fashion, and it mentions Tissot as an artist who was so current on women's fashions (and presumably men's too) that historians look to him for the most accurate depictions.

message 21: by Dvora (new)

Dvora Treisman Very nice. I love the paintings from that period. And yes, look at the clothes! I am so lazy, I just throw on jeans and a t-shirt, most days. I can't imagine putting all the effort that women did in those days. True, some make more of an effort than I do now, but in those days getting dressed was real work. And they looked beautiful.

Joan Mitchell

Joan Mitchell is quickly becoming one of my favorite artists. I'm finding that, like with Rothko, her paintings make my heart jump.

You may also like to take a look at Katherine Kehole. Her paintings are all about shapes that become images. Her work is not a 3D as ths Nielly, but it is very powerful. She has a FB page and a website.

Tissot was an outstanding painter/etcher - I don't think he's given enough credit.
