Have you ever read a book by an author that you are familiar with and it didn't sound like the author has written that book? Maybe, it's just me, but I have recently read a book by Julie Garwood called Sizzle and the voice didn't sound like Julie. I feel in love with Julie's Claybornes. Cole and Noah are my favorite.

If I am not mistaken, I've read that some writers uses ghost writers and I hope that's not true. Maybe, Julie changed in her writing, but the story didn't sound like she wrote it.

I'm very trusting and if a book has a certain author's name on it then I'm thinking it's written by them. But yes, I've read a few books that I wondered about. Not necessarily a ghost writer but I did wonder what happened. There are a few of Kathleen E Woodiwiss' books that didn't have the same voice to me. Her later ones.

Cindi (ourtrumpcard) | 381 comments Wouldn't that have to be disclosed inside? Anyway, the flipside of your question: what about the trend for multiple authors to write a book (or alternate authors in a series)? To me they always sound exactly alike! I have a PNR series in mind that I of course can't think of the name right now ...ah, this one The Calling (Immortals, #1) by Jennifer Ashley .

Cindi (ourtrumpcard) | 381 comments Or (and I'm on a roll now!), this series Destiny (Rogue Angel, #1) by Alex Archer by "Alex Archer"? I understand AA is not a real author and that all these numerous books in the Rogue Angel series are by different writers. Great series, IMHO, BTW.

I think it's crucial for an author to keep their voice, despite what they write. Now I can understand if they are deliberately writing under a pseudonym and in a different genre altogether. I haven't read Sizzle, so I can't comment, but I love Julie Garwood's voice and that would bother me if she didn't sound like herself in a book.

Cindi, I have only read one Rogue Angel book, but I enjoyed it. I have a lot of those to read still.

Lauren (laurenjberman) I loved Jude Deveraux's books as a teen but her latest Edilean series has been very disappointing and hasn't had her "voice" as Danielle puts it. Not sure if it is a ghost writer or if my reading tastes have changed.

I am not a big fan of Deveraux anymore, which is sad, because I loved her back in the day.

I loved her historicals but her contemporaries don't do anything for me. My mom likes them though.

I liked High Tide the most out of her contemporaries, but I agree they aren't as good.

Jessica (studioeastrat) | 511 comments I wonder if that is what happened to Gena Showalter's new book. It doesn't even "sound" like her when you read it. Really strange....

That's a shame, Jessica. She's such a good writer.

I know. She WAS one of my auto buys but after this one. I don't know if I will again. I just hope that it doesn't bleed over into her lords of the underworld series. So for me it is one more go of it and if Kane's books is anything like Beauty Awakened (Angels of the Dark, #2) by Gena Showalter than that will be it. Sad really she was one of my favorites.

There's a discussion that she just had been sick and found her faith afterward. Maybe that affect her writing.

Yeah, I had heard that. It's just disappointing.

message 15: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (laurenjberman) I had also heard that her books have taken on a more religious tone.

It is unfortunate. I respect those who have faith and have my own beliefs but I dislike being preached to.

I'm glad she found something in her own life that gives her joy. I would think ultimately it will make her a better writer because she'll be fulfilled and energized.

message 17: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (studioeastrat) | 511 comments I'm happy for her as well. I just felt a little mislead. I was expecting a steamy PRN and what I got was more like something out of the religion section. It just wasn't what I was expecting. I also felt like she kind of undid some of the world building that she had created in the first book and through out the Lords of the Underworld books as far as the angels went. Overall, I am glad that she found her faith and I wish her luck with that but I will not be buying her books right off the bat anymore. I will have to wait and see how Kane's book goes before I decide if I will buy anymore of her books for that matter.

I totally respect that, Jessica. If you feel she isn't writing what you want to read, you have the right to choose not to read her books anymore.

I have no idea why this thread was just discovered. Okay I love Julie Garwood's historical novels, but find her contemporary ones unreadable. It is like they are being written by someone else.

Someone brought up the writing partnerships. I love Sherrilyn Kenyon, was really into the B.A.D series, until she took on Dianna Love as a writing partner. It's nothing against the other lady but that mess feels SK only lends her name to it. Her voice is missing in them totally.

I couldn't get into the B.A.D series. I haven't been inspired to try the Dianna Love co-written series.

Missyb | 98 comments People say that some of the early Anita Blake books were written by her husband not her.

The P.C.Cast House of Night series, some of the early books read as two authors, but as the series progressed it stopped. I don't know if one stopped writing as much or if they melded better.

Paganalexandria | 354 comments My mother is a James Patterson fan but hates those co-authored titles. Series killer books are too terrifying to so don't have an opinion. Are there any fans that notice a big difference?
