Sandra (sleo) | 1913 comments Hello everyone! It's time for nominations again. Let's see what we can do to keep the process smooth. Please no Young Adult books, so check to see how books are shelved. We go by how the good folk at Goodreads shelves the books. If the first or second largest number of shelves is categorized as YA, then the book will be considered as YA and thus not eligible for our group read.

As usual, books must be seconded. You must link the book so that group members can check it out. Also, if you would describe the book a little and tell us why you nominated it, it would be helpful.

Books must be available in a variety of formats and in a number of countries.

I will close nominations after 12 books are nominated and seconded, and as usual, I will close the group to new members during the voting process.

Please check the group book shelf to see what we've already read. Also check our sister group as most of us are members of the both groups.

Brittany Comeaux (bri-cx) http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/66...

I've been reading this for the past couple of days and I'm already halfway through it. The story takes place in Underdark, a place below the surface of the world that is ruled by drows. It's very well written and attention grabbing. I'd like to nominate this.

message 3: by Daniel (new)

Daniel (dward526) The Unremembered (The Vault of Heaven, #1) by Peter Orullian

My suggestion for this time.

message 4: by Bev (new)

Bev (greenginger) | 744 comments Dragon Prince
Dragon Prince (Dragon Prince, #1) by Melanie Rawn

Typical epic fantasy. First in a series but story does stand alone. It concerns Rohan a prince of the Desert and his attempt to re unite the tribes. It contains some fantastic and interesting magic and most of all loads of Dragons.

People with smart phones can't read it when you only post the cover. And please tell us why we should read it.

I second Dragon Prince

message 7: by Martyn (new)

Martyn Adams The Windup Girl

The Windup Girl by Paolo Bacigalupi

I'm in need of something different from gods, kings and the usual apocalyptic apathy! This looks like more of a challenge than wading into the realms we are all so familiar with.

message 8: by Martyn (new)

Martyn Adams Dragon Price looks like same old, same old! It's got poor reviews! Lets jump in with both feet and try a different kind of fantasy!

I'm pretty sure this is scifi.

message 10: by Martyn (new)

Martyn Adams Isn't science fiction just one of the genres of fantasy! It's a made up world with made up people, I couldn't be so blinkered as to rule it out!

Andrew✌️ (andrew619) | 58 comments http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/17...

Till now, I haven't read anything of David Gemmel, so I would to start with this book, the first of a serie, that was recommended to me by a friend. The story take place in a wild world that remember me "Mad Max", but also an old weastern movies, with an hero (with guns and Bible) that go around in search of a city named Jerusalem.

I will try not to be offended by that remark. If you have a better idea thats not sci fi then do suggest it......

A lot of fantasy readers like the same old same old...

However many fantasy readers are brave enough to try all types..... especially those of us who have been reading fantasy a long time..... :)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 772 comments I'll second Wolf in Shadow ( Wolf in Shadow (Jon Shannow, #1) by David Gemmell )

message 15: by A.L. (new)

A.L. Butcher (alb2012) | 167 comments Palanquin Of Heaven. I think this is a fantasy romance, looks interesting by a new Indian author.

I haven't yet read it but it seems to have a bit of everything.

My apologies. From Jacket The gods, makers of worlds, seek to create balance — between matter and energy; and between mortals who strive toward the transcendent, and the natural perils they must tame or overcome. But one of the gods fashions a world filled with hellish creatures far too powerful to allow balance; he is condemned to live for eternity with his most hateful creations in that world’s d...

The Unremembered

I have it in my personal collection, and looking for an excuse to read it.

No, they're two separate genres, often lumped together by a lazy public.

Exactly bring on a really exciting and unusual list!!

message 20: by carol. (new)

carol. I would like to nominate Divine Misfortune. Martinez is an interesting writer that usually writes more contemporary fantasy, usually with quite a bit of humor. Divine Misfortune sounds like a fun, fast summer read and I have a copy on my shelf, just waiting for a read. His books are all independent of each other, as far as I can tell, so no commitment to a series!

message 21: by Nico (last edited Apr 13, 2013 08:55AM) (new)

Nico (darkybald) Promise of Blood (The Powder Mage, #1) by Brian McClellan Promise of Blood
Just started his debut novel and really like it. Very simliar style to Brandon Sanderson.

message 22: by [deleted user] (new)

Kelly Armstrong's book Bitten

message 23: by Brandybuck (new)

Brandybuck I'll nominate Suldrun's Garden by Jack Vance. This was the first book I read by Vance and it is the reason he is now high on my personal list of favorite authors.

message 24: by Todd (new)

Todd | 21 comments I'd like to nominate a David Eddings book, Pawn of Prophecy.

He's an author that has been on my radar for some time, and one that neither this group nor the series group has read yet; this book is the first in his Belgariad series (#41 on NPR's Top 100 Sci-Fi/Fantasy Novels List).

Another reason? It's epic fantasy! :-)

Bev (greenginger) | 744 comments Brandybuck wrote: "I'll nominate Suldrun's Garden by Jack Vance. This was the first book I read by Vance and it is the reason he is now high on my personal list of favorite authors."

Just to note in case anyone needs to know, this book is also in an omnibus edition by Vance named Lyonesse. Suldruns garden is the first in the book.

Oops. Forgot to clarify that. As Bev indicated, Suldrun's Garden is the first book in the Lyonesse trilogy and is therefore contained in the compiled book by that name.

Donald (bigdon) Well, if people want to go for something a little different, how about this
Monster Hunter International Monster Hunter International (MHI, #1) by Larry Correia

message 29: by Darren (new)

Darren I'd like to nominate Voice of Our Shadow by Jonathan Carroll. I love all his books, they start with the mundane (although this is wonderfully written) and then begin to subtly shift to the fantastic/supernatural.

message 30: by Nico (new)

Nico (darkybald) Zayne wrote: "I recommend The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson, because that book just blew me and a lot of people here have been saying they want something fresh in fantasy. Well here it is :)."

allready read..look at the bookshelf

message 31: by Brandybuck (new)

Brandybuck I'll second Monster Hunter International. Looks like a fun read.

message 32: by Amy (last edited Apr 13, 2013 11:38AM) (new)

Amy M I recommend The Castings Trilogy (Castings, #1-3) by Pamela Freeman The Castings Trilogy

Originally released as a trilogy in Australia this is the omnibus edition. I've just read the "first book" and it was a fantastic read.

One of the more gritty and human reads I've come across.

message 33: by Tim (new)

Tim Mann I recommend The Broken Tomb (The War for Inìsfail, #2) by Kaiya Hart

message 34: by Olga (new)

Olga Godim (olgagodim) | 85 comments I'd like to nominate Lord Darcy. It was originally published in the 1960s and is about an alternative world of ours, where magic takes place of science. No orphans, no sword fights (well, maybe a little), and no dystopia either. Just an old-fashioned mystery with a charming detective who uses magic instead of science to solve crimes. I read it years ago and enjoyed it.

I'll also second the book base on the fact that I don't see many discussions of her works.

I had three books in mind to nominate - this was one, so I wholeheartedly "third," (since it's already been seconded) this book, thanks very much, a great nomination!

Seconded

message 39: by Kerry (new)

Kerry (rocalisa) | 46 comments I'd like to nominate Rosemary and Rue by Seanan McGuire. I loved her books as Mira Grant and really enjoyed her new InCryptid series, so I would like to go back and try her first series. This is the first book of that.

I understand it's urban fantasy with a celtic-y feeling and a fae court. Lots of people love the series so I would like to try it out.

message 40: by Bridget (new)

Bridget I nominate Spellbound by Larry Correia.

message 41: by Beth (new)

Beth Johnson (planetarypan) I second "Rosemary and Rue". I've been wanting to read that series for awhile now.

Daniel (dward526) third castings. I could get behind that I think

message 44: by Larry (last edited Apr 13, 2013 11:16PM) (new)

Larry (boffa) Ill third Wolf in Shadow by David Gemmell.

message 45: by Bryek (new)

Bryek I nominate Besieged (The Outcast Chronicles, #1) by Rowena Cory Daniells Beseiged by Rowena Cory Daniiells. It has really good world building, an interesting magic system and a diversion from the nuclear family system.

Hi Kevin that is the main reason that I suggested it.

message 47: by Todd (new)

Todd | 36 comments Spellwright I nominate Spellwright by Blake Charlton. It's a pretty interesting read, it took me awhile to get into it, the magic system is quite unique and I had a bit of hard time imagining it. But once I got through the first few chapters I began to really appreciate it.

message 48: by Darren (new)

Darren I'll second Spellwright - it's already on my to read lst!

message 49: by Darren (new)
