The Rape

My only real complaint is with Mary, and the events that happened to her in the beginning of the book. I think it was unnecessary to make her live through what she did in order to establish that she was emotionally cautious and reluctant to start a new relationship. I think a bad break-up in her past might have achieved the same end.

I am editing my comment: now that I am deep into book 3, I understand the reason. It's a jumping off point for other story lines. Still, if you are only going to read book 1 it just comes off as annoying.

It wasn't just 'reluctance' though. It was a genuine fear of men. Which made the subsequent relationship that she did develop (won't spoil it here) that much more interesting and understandable.
Yeah it's kind of my biggest gripe with the book to. I didn't think it was well handled, I hope it's consequences are explored more deeply in the further books.
