Short book description:
Seventeen year old Fern is a survivor. She survived The Devastation an apocalyptic event that killed almost everyone. All the other survivors were children that were inoculated during the twelve years before and lived to see death, and destruction ravage around them. Now six years later their lives have continued in the safety of their clans; groups of children that have bonded together and created a new way of life.
As a Woodlander living in Elanclose Forest Fern is skilled at stealth and being able to protect herself. Although she is not a defender she takes on the role and patrols the forest keeping an eye out for danger. It is on one of these ventures that she comes across the Citans, boys that are much larger than the Woodlanders and a possible danger to her clan. Rushing back to the Woodlander camp she informs their leader eighteen year old Oak. He has protected her and been her friend from the day of the Devastation when he found her beside her dead family.
Oak is everything to Fern, she loves him dearly but as time passed Oak has distanced himself from her. He has become taken with Willow who is spiritual and wise through auras. Fern's jealousy gets the better of her as she grapples with wanting to prove herself and also win Oak's love for herself. Fern's own desires are forced to wait when her belief that the Citans are not just wandering through the forest becomes reality and the Woodlanders are pulled into a course of events that they cannot escape from and must see through to the end.
Following Kisin’s directions (the leader of the Lavats) they realize he plans to embroil everyone in his quest for control and domination to rule over every clan. The clans are drawn together and must decide if they will fight as one to stop Kisin's plans or remain opposed to each other.
