I have zero point of reference to Whats going on, and I'm left feeling kinda lost, like I'm just catching bits here and there from what I "know" of middle east culture...
near the end of book 1 they went into some detail about the specifics of the worlds magic, and it was pretty refreshing.

Have no fear. It doesn't last the whole book and things get fun in the same way the first book was again fairly quick.
As for bad ass heroes, I don't know if I would call anyone in Abercrombies books a "hero", but definitely enough badass to go around.
Also, not sure what you didn't like about the Night Angel books... might need to just power through the part that's bogging you down.

I enjoy someone who is gifted a great power, and struggles to control it... or just uses it in order to achieve a greater purpose...
in regards to Night Angel... for whatever reason I just didn't enjoy book1...and I'm carrying that prejudice to book 2...granted its unfair, but its hard to combat...
I felt the second book came together quite well by the end.
However, the third book? *grimaces* I don't want to ruin your enjoyment but if I lower your expectations you may enjoy it more! It sucked :)

Um, it's one of those things that if I say it will totally ruin your enjoyment...
But...this --> "Honest Word". Renna.

I'm about 9 hours into the audiobook for book 3...
its odd that other authors can create incredibly detailed worlds without using flashbacks. this guy LOVES the flashback

as i am now typing on an actual computer, let me know when you finish up so i can share my joke

more and more, I think this book really should have been a comic, not a novel...

it IS a good series, I got pretty burnt out on it near the end of book two, and should have taken a break, listen to some Pratchett to cleanse the pallet, ya know.
the final book ends with a pretty decent cliff-hanger... that would have been more effective if I wasn't eagerly looking forward to the books end.
earlier this week I tried to find a new book to check out, tried a Sanderson book, tried to start the second Night Angel book by Brent Weeks...neither of them hooked me.
so on a whim I started the Warded Man (the Painted Man)...and for whatever reason, my brain decided THIS was the one.
There isn't much to complain about with this book. its incredibly well put together even though the narrative cycles through 3 different stories (till, SPOILER, they meet up [its not inobvious that this will happen])
some times it does feel that a character seems to be getting more screen time, but honestly it evens out quite well!
the magic system in this world is fascinating, but not described in depth (almost done with book 1... so, I have no doubt this will get fleshed out). the characters are interesting and strong in their own rights, and don't have an identical background in the slightest.
I'll admit I'm a sucker for bad ass heroes (Kvothe, Guts, Corwin, Wolverine, aang...) and this book certainly delivers one awesome badass!
hrm. that's about all I want to say now... as I progress through the remaining two books I'll return to put in some cents
:-)
