I think it's an attempt to be above it all, like it doesn't effect her. But, it obviously does. I used to loathe her. I don't. Nor do a worship at the altar of Gwyn. She's done some stuff I really like, Emma and Royal Tenenbaums...Shallow Hal. But, I don't rush to see anything she's in, or assume it's going to be good.

She's clearly not homely (American meaning, plain and not very pretty.), but the most beautiful? No way. I could easily come up with a dozen I think are prettier.

message 7: by [deleted user] (new)

She does absolutely nothing for me.

message 8: by [deleted user] (new)

Well, the guys seem adamant. I wonder how People chooses?

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments conny chung!!!

message 11: by [deleted user] (new)

Um, specially since Iron Man are not exactly great movies. They are fun; I like them...but they are hardly great movies.

message 12: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments the first iron man was terrific

message 13: by Phil (new)

Phil | 11837 comments I thought she was really cute as Pepper Potts in the first Iron Man movie. She looked different to me in the sequels -- lost innocence, perhaps? That would be good acting, eh?

I don't have any great memory of her from either "Shakespeare in Love" or "The Talented Mr. Ripley." I don't believe I've seen any other movies she has been in. Wait... I think I saw "Malice" but, again, I don't remember her.

I tend to get the too-skinny blonde actresses confused. In my mind, she's the same as the one from the "Kill Bill" movies and, to a lesser extent, the ditzy blonde from "The Mask" and "Something About Mary."

Is it obvious yet that I'm not at all star-struck and don't care enough to know one from another?

Connie Chung used to RULE! Then she married that asswipe and started treating her profession and her own career like a joke. That made her much less attractive to me.

message 14: by [deleted user] (new)

Gwyn is much prettier than Uma...IMO.

message 15: by Phil (new)

Phil | 11837 comments I would probably agree if I saw them side-by-side. My point was that to me they are entirely interchangeable. Nothing stands out about any of the three I mentioned, except they could use a cookie or two.

message 16: by [deleted user] (new)

*Passes Phil a cookie*

Susan | 6406 comments Phil wrote: " Connie Chung used to RULE! Then she married that asswipe and started treating her profession and her own career like a joke. That made her much less attractive to me "

Yes. So very true! And the singing on a piano.

message 18: by Susan (new)

Susan | 6406 comments I recently heard that she had problems loosing the extra weight she gained after pregnancy and so she came up with a diet or a cookbook or something. I just remember the selling point was something to the effect that I was not alone even Gwyneth had trouble with getting off the extra baby weight.

Hmmm.

Believable and identifiable if I weighed what I did in middle school before I got giantly pregnant.

message 19: by [deleted user] (new)

The gluten stichiation (on purpose...shut up) is gettin' out of hand. I don't get it. What are we doing that is causing this? Laura Ingalls never had to worry about gluten in her biscuits...

message 20: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments i eat gluten free and it sucks but i do feel about 50% better than i did prior. they thought i had a gall bladder prob and took it out and still was the same.

message 21: by [deleted user] (new)

My Step-daughter does gluten free. She lived with us for a few months after she got back from Denmark and I got creative with the corn flour / rice flour thing, making stuff up etc. She hadn't had a normal pancake in so long, she just thought it was all fine. Makes me gag. But then, I like my food too much anyway.

But, when we were kids, there was no such thing as gluten free. So for thousands of years there was no identifiable issue with gluten. What's changed? Industrialization has made us gluten intolerant? Lactose I kind of get, the whole "no other species keeps drinking of the milk after weening" thing. But, gluten? Why?

Tell me why , Kev! (I'm whining now.)

message 22: by [deleted user] (new)

Ummm. I'm type two diabetic and OFTEN have gastric issues as well as being gassy as all hell... Maybe I'm rejecting the non-wheat?

I wonder if I should give the gluten free thing a chance? Summer is a great time to try, all those good veg & fruit options...

message 23: by CD (new)

CD | 1577 comments There is a very real disease/condition called celiac disease that is about gluten problems.

Humans aren't meant to digest glutens (see cows and other ruminants). Most people have bodies that just ignore the gluten content of food. Others can die from the gluten protein. It is an autoimmune related disorder like Type 1 diabetes or some thyroid problems.

So if you have it or a propensity towards the reaction in your intestines, goodbye pizza.

CD | 1577 comments Misha wrote: "Apparently it's all Monsanto's fault. They've been messing with the gluten content of wheat or something. There's an article here, although I'll add the caveat that I just got it from a quick googl..."

Misha wrote: "Celiac is much more severe than a gluten intolerance. If Amelia had celiac, she'd definitely know it."

But gluten intolerance is the key factor in celiac disease. (see http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/celi...)

Yes it is serious, but it doesn't start out as 'much'. The long term exposure to the protein causes cumulative damage. Certain groups are or should be tested immediately. They include not only the diabetics and thyroid patients mentioned, but children who are born with Downs Syndrome(we have some in a family branch) and other related disorders need to be evaluated promptly.

I wish people who don't understand genetics would stop picking on Monsanto. Monsanto had nothing to do with the original Borlaug Dwarf Wheat.

Elimination of the dwarf wheat as grown in other parts of the world would have an immediate and profound effect. It is called famine. The United States contrary to a lot of hype doesn't grow the same varieties that so many GMO opponents damn. There is some GMO wheat of the Monsanto variety grown but other types as well. If you don't believe take your yard stick to western South Dakota in the next couple of weeks and look and the winter red wheat that is about to be harvested. It isn't four feet but it isn't two feet or less either!

The developer of this 'evil' food, which by the way is still wheat, Norman Borlaug was awarded the Nobel Prize for his work. Seems that tall wheat just doesn't grow real well when the wind blows too hard. The shorter stuff doesn't blow over and thus has a higher output of food.

Anyone really wanting to know the story should at least visit the Agriculture trade show of record in the United States. The Farm Progress Show 2013 will be August 27-29, 2013 in Decatur, Illinois. You will be surprised at what you learn. It's an international event that I try to attend as often as possible. I've gone on tours with everyone from third world military types to Amish farmers, in the same tour group of exhibits.

Time for some of that dreaded wheat in a sandwich. Or maybe garlic bread? Pizza doesn't sound bad either.

Otherwise I'll just have to eat like the horses. Quaker Oats (another evil company you know) here I come!!

message 25: by CD (new)

CD | 1577 comments Oh yeah, there was an original topic.

No. Gwyneth isn't the most anything other that top ten annoying. Can't stand Cold Play.

message 26: by [deleted user] (new)

I eat of the oat. You can get ones that don't have wheat flour all over them though.

I agree, Misha, it could be the meds. I had a tendency toward gas before that.

Still, it doesn't mean "good-bye pizza". They have gluten free pizza all over here in Portland. I'm not saying I'm even going to do it. But, I gave veggie-ism a try for a year. I missed bacon, but I didn't die. How bad can it be?

message 27: by Susan (new)

Susan | 6406 comments ::wipes tear for scorned pizza::

There are many restaurants near me that offer gluten free meals...and pizza.

I have a friend who cannot eat wheat gluten. I made her a tomato pie in a gluten free crust when she came over for dinner. It was still just as good.

message 28: by Phil (new)

Phil | 11837 comments There were a lot of words here about gluten stuff, but still no answer as to why the problems are so much more prevalent now than a decade (or two or three) ago.

message 29: by [deleted user] (new)

Yes. Misha posted an article about GM wheat. It's all un- digestible 'n junk.

message 30: by Susan (new)

Susan | 6406 comments 'N junk.

Hey. Where has FeLarryix been?

message 31: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments the way i understand it is that the wheat/grain products we eat now are not the same ones we ate 15 years ago (or however long) as the genetic engineering of seed to grow more abundant crops has altered these grains. i agree with the what the heck happened arguement as i had no problems even 5 years ago but something def changed. i tested neg to celiac but def have an intolerance. when i eat something with gluten i am miserable for several days. i do make gluten free pizza (barely above sucking) and can make gluten free bread (sucks) and most resturants are offering some options now but nothing is as good as a big ol helping of gluten

message 32: by evie (last edited Apr 26, 2013 06:11AM) (new)

evie (ecie) | 4439 comments I am not gluten intolerant but I actually prefer a gluten free pizza base.
I find it to be nicely thin and crispy. I'm not that keen on pizza or Gwyneth.

message 39: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia Paschen | 7333 comments I liked her in Glee, Country Strong was pretty awful. She looks too skinny and pale for this Reubenesque Midwesterner. Gimme a gal with some meat on her bones, and a sassy mouth.

message 40: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 3595 comments Clueless in her privileged world. So sad that she has the financial freedom to take time off from her several million-dollar jobs because of her divorce.

message 41: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 67 comments I think that she's average and Charlize Theron is much more beautiful.

message 42: by Suefly (new)

Suefly | 620 comments Beauty is so subjective, but, for me, she is ridiculous. She's do out of touch and elitist, and that takes away from her outward appearance. I feel she's an average, lovely woman who due to her finances, can invest in measures that maintain her appearance.

Now, 'queen of the side boob' (LG) made me snort out loud. Classic.

message 43: by [deleted user] (new)

Choosing the most beautiful person is way too subjective to have any meaning. Charlize Theron has no appeal. For me, no one has ever come close to Audrey Hepburn. :)

message 44: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 67 comments Thanks, Emm! I think that Charlize has a classic beauty that is timeless. I do also agree with Gail though - Audrey Hepburn was gorgeous and remains a beauty icon!

message 45: by Carol (new)

Carol | 1678 comments I never understood anyone's interest in Uma Thurman.
In my opinion, Blythe Danner has it all over Gwyneth. She has grace where Gwyneth just seems pale and mousy.

message 46: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 3595 comments Paltrow, in a recent interview, said that she has a more difficult time as a mother than working-class mothers because of her work schedule of making a movie a year.

message 47: by [deleted user] (new)

I am sure in her mind she really believes that to be true.

Who has tried her $200 smoothie?

http://goop.com/recipes/gps-morning-s...

At least, if you buy all the ingredients needed for the smoothie, you've spent $200. Presumably you don't use the entire jar of $55 "Brain Dust" in one single smoothie.

The WaPo reviewed the smoothie with a doctor present.
