Ed | 67 comments Trying to decide whether to tackle the games of thrones series or Abercrombie's first law series. Any suggestions?

message 2: by Mark (new)

Mark Abercrombie then do game of thrones.

message 3: by Ed (new)

Ed | 67 comments Probably makes sense...have enjoyed book one so far.

First Law, since it's completed. Plus the in-world standalones are good as well.

Then ASoIaF.

Kim | 1499 comments Exactly what Ala said.

Ed | 67 comments Will do. Thanks! So far I have really enjoyed it. Others recommended Scott Lynch's trilogy and Robin ?'s series. Any thoughts compared to Ambercrombie and GRR Martin?

message 7: by Kim (new)

Kim | 1499 comments Well there's only two books out so far in Scott Lynch's Gentleman Bastards series. Book 3 should be out in October. They're well worth reading. They are a lot lighter compared to Abercrombie and Martin.

I'm guessing the other one is Robin Hobb. I couldn't stand her Liveship Trader trilogy but I really enjoyed book 1 of the Farseer trilogy, Assassin's Apprentice.

What Kim said.

Though I've read Robin Hobbs Farseer and Tawny Man trilogies and enjoyed both. Couldn't even get in to her Liveship series at all though.

Ed | 67 comments Thanks! I want to read both series now! Any others you recommend?

Well...

Everything ever written by Brandon Sanderson.

Everything ever written by Guy Gavriel Kay(except Fionavar).

The Dark Tower series by Stephen King.

Dresden Files by Jim Butcher.

Tales of the Ketty Jay series by Chris Wooding.

Hell... I could keep going, but that's a pretty good start I think.

Ed | 67 comments Thanks so much. I keep hearing Sanderson as a recommendation. I really do HABE to start reading his work!

For the record, none of those I've listed are like ASoIaF or Abercrombie. They're just really good fantasy series/authors you should check out.

message 13: by Ed (new)

Ed | 67 comments What is Sandersons mystborn series like? I keep hearing about it.

message 14: by [deleted user] (new)

Faster paced than ASoIaF. Less 'gritty' than Abercrombie.

It's got some political intrigue, some action, a bit of a caper feel to it. And the magic system is well thought out and fun.

Ed | 67 comments I've got that saved at the library...thanks!
