Liz | 196 comments We can discuss our choices for this challenge, ask for suggestions, etc.

How the challenge works:
If you already read non-fiction: Set a goal for the number of non-fiction books you'd like to read in the next two months. If you finish early, you can always increase your goal, or simply celebrate the successful completion of the challenge.

If you don't generally read non-fiction: Challenge yourself to read one or two non-fiction books for the duration of the challenge. Perhaps stepping outside of your comfort zone will lead you to appreciate the genre. Or if you find you still don't like it, you still have the satisfaction of giving it a shot.

Liz | 196 comments I've set a goal of 4 books for this challenge (I figure 2 in May, 2 in June). I'm currently reading The End of Your Life Book Club and will soon be reading Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil for my TBR Pair choice.

The End of Your Life Book Club by Will Schwalbe Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by John Berendt

BattyKat (prosserkat) I didn't realize MGGE was non-fiction.

I've never read it, naturally. I remember there was a movie a million years ago, with, I think, Kevin Spacey. But again, million years ago.

I have some non-fiction lined up for a reading challenge already (Dewey Decimal challenge!). Maybe I'll plug one in for June....

Pink I'm also setting my goal as 4 books for this challenge.

Completed 4/4

The Selfish Gene
The Psychopath Test
The Diary of a Young Girl
The Men Who Stare at Goats

The Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins The Psychopath Test by Jon Ronson The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank The Men Who Stare at Goats by Jon Ronson

message 5: by BattyKat (new)

BattyKat (prosserkat) I'm only going to do ONE book for this. I know, I know.

But, once you see which book, you might understand.

Physics of the Future: How Science Will Shape Human Destiny and Our Daily Lives by the Year 2100

And I'm waiting till June to start it.

Annie (louize48) | 291 comments I'm going to set a goal of TWO for this challenge:

1st: Just Kids by Patti Smith (currently reading) and 2nd: Gulp by Mary Roach

message 7: by April (new)

April (ajoys) I really enjoy non fiction one of my favorites is The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. I think I'll try 2 since I currently doing 6 other challenges. Will be reading The End of Your Life Book Club. I am currently reading The Story of My Life by Helen Keller. I read a fiction book based on her life (Helen Keller in Love) and it made want to re- read her autobiography.

message 8: by April (new)

April (ajoys) OK I’m going to do 3 non fiction books, just found The Chronicles of Downtown Abbey at my library!

message 9: by Pink (new)

Pink I finished my first book for this challenge - The Psychopath Test: A Journey Through the Madness Industry I really enjoyed it :)

message 10: by Candy (new)

Candy | 8 comments I will read two for May. I will be reading The Feud Between The Hatfield and the McCoy's for the first one.

message 11: by Bec (last edited Jun 07, 2013 10:18AM) (new)

Bec (foreverfnm) Bit late to the party, but I'm wearing my party dress.

I read a bit of non-fiction, so I'm going to aim for five books during this month and next.

House to House: An Epic Memoir of War
First Into Action
Gulag (GULP)
One Bullet Away: The Making of a Marine Officer
Hiroshima

Liz | 196 comments I've just started Assassination Vacation and am loving it so far. :) Has anyone read anything else by the author, Sarah Vowell?

Hiya Liz!
I read
Unfamiliar Fishes
by her about a year after a three week solo jaunt to the Island of Hawaii. It was equally informative AND side-splitting! I would love to read more by her but haven't gotten to it quite yet. ;~.}

message 15: by Am (new)

Am Hey! I am currently reading for the TBR challenge Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (which by the way I did not know it was non-fiction) and decided that the next non-fiction book will be Empires Of The Sea: The Final Battle For The Mediterranean, 1521-1580

message 16: by Liz (last edited May 24, 2013 08:23AM) (new)

Liz | 196 comments Finished Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil today, so I've read three out of four. I think I'll go up my goal to five though, and read two more next month. Actually, I've just remembered I'm reading another non-fic book at the moment. David Rakoff's Don't Get Too Comfortable: The Indignities of Coach Class, The Torments of Low Thread Count, The Never-Ending Quest for Artisanal Olive Oil, and Other First World Problems. So I'm upping my goal to six. :)

Also, Annie: I've definitely added Unfamiliar Fishes to my TBR list. And I added another of her books, although at the moment I can't recall which one. Fail.

Coincidence or fate?
My Dad read Fraud by Rakoff and then HAD to read his 2 other books published before his Rakoff passed away (I think pretty recently).
Dad read all three & really got into his style and sense of humor. (This IS at the ripe age of 93!). But my Dad has super sense of humor his old self, anyway!
He has just gave me all three books to read! I will have to fit them in later! However, the one you chose was MY pick to start first!
BTW, I've also read the John Berendt book, since my Daddy was born & raised in Savannah. If memory serves, it was based loosely on some actual events, but was a novel, I believe.
Nevertheless, it's so full of historical Savannah lore, I'd argue it could go in Fiction or Non-fiction!
Thanks for the update and enjoy the Fishies book and the other one called???? lol.

Liz | 196 comments Midnight is non-fiction, but some (most?) names have been changed. He also made a note at the end that says he changed timing of events a bit to make the narrative flow.

Also, it's The Partly Cloudy Patriot, and there's another one like Assassination and Fishes called The Wordy Shipmates.

Also! Rakoff died? Really? I've got Fraud on my list to read too.

message 19: by Annie (new)

Annie (louize48) | 291 comments It's been so long since I read Midnight & my Daddy told me so much about Savannah that a lot blends about that area, that book, etc...
My father also was painting and writing a lot when he living there so the whole thing about Savannah has a sort a semi-fictional hazy status about it in my memory. Hard to explain...
Unfortunately, David Rakoff suffered from Cancer on & off for the last years of this life but went downhill very quickly in the end. I think it was around either the end of last year or beginning of this one (I can recheck for you on the Times website where I found out or there are references to things written about him after his death on wikipedia). It was sad for my Daddy as he liked his demeanor far better than say, Sedaris and was very disappointed to learn that no more books would be forthcoming. :(

message 20: by Candy (new)

Candy | 8 comments I read my two non-fiction books. the feud between the Hatfield and the McCoy's. the other book was To Heaven and Back.

message 21: by Annie (new)

Annie (louize48) | 291 comments I finished the two books I set for the Non-Fiction challenge but actually ended up changing 1 of the book I planned to read. So, I ended up reading:
Just Kids by Patti Smith by Patti Smith
DEFINITELY, one of the best books I've read in a long time!!! Highly recommend if the subject at all interests! And for the second book, I REALLY needed a light, laugh out loud book, so I chose:
The Potty Mouth at the Table by Laurie Notaro by Laurie Notaro

message 22: by Pink (new)

Pink I finished my last book for this challenge today - The Men Who Stare at Goats which I found fascinating. I wrote a review if anyone wants to learn more about this one :)

message 23: by April (new)

April (ajoys) OK so I can't get ahold of a copy of The End of Your Life Book Club. Instead I am reading The Reading Promise.

message 24: by April (new)

April (ajoys) Just finished A Lion Called Christian. That makes a grand total of 4 non fiction books for the months of May and June.
