Eva-Marie Nevarez (evamarie3578) | 753 comments Another question for you guys! :)
I came across this lisitng yesterday or the day before and noticed it was hand entered so I wanted to put the correct info in like the publisher, ISBN, date published and all that so I started looking around. I can't find the book anywhere by this author at all. Not on her site, not on amazon, nowhere.
A friend of mine has it listed as she owns it so I asked her to check if hers has this title or not and she said she's get back to me when she gets home and the person who listed it isn't active anymore...of course.
The listed it with the year, title and supposed author and nothing else. I just wanted to make sure I was doing the right thing by waiting to see what my friend Dawn says about her book.
If this is wrong does it just get deleted?

Not if you can't figure out that the readers meant a different book -- these people read some book, and their ratings and reviews ought to be attached to the book they actually read, if you can determine which book they meant. Asking someone who has it listed to double-check the title is the best solution! (You'll probably wind up deleting this actual record after combining it if the book they meant is already on GR, but it's always possible that it's an ISBN-less eBook or limited printing or alternate title edition.)

Eva-Marie Nevarez (evamarie3578) | 753 comments You misunderstood me! I wouldn't have deleted it regardless without instruction. I didn't say I would delete it!
But yes, I know that it'll probably be combined and then deleted- I like to run things by the powers that be though first. :)
I have been asking people that have it listed- a friend is checking the actual book for me because she seems to have it and we're thinking it's Summer Island by Hannah.
I don't think it ISBN less or any of the other things you mentioned- it is possible but I'm fairly positive it's another case of someone listing a book without caring to insert the correct info.
Rivka, Lisa and all- I'll post back when I hear something more.
Thanks Cait!

Don't wait on me. I'm about to disappear for a couple days again.

jenjn79 | 564 comments Actually, I think the book might be The Summerhouse by Jude Deveraux. There's one review listed for the book you posted about and it seems to match the description for the Deveraux book.

It wouldn't be the first time I've come across a book where the person listed the wrong author.

I also notice that the person who created the entry has a "real" edition of the Deveraux book on their shelf, but has no books by Hannah (not even the blank edition she created).

So my opinion would be to change the author to Jude Deveraux, combine it with the other Summerhouses, then delete it.

I thought it might be that also- I forget how I came across it because I don't even know any of Jude Deveraux's books but I must have seen it somewhere.
Okay- that's what I'll do then! Thanks Isis, Cait, and rivka anyway! :)

Isis, should I go ahead and do it know or wait a little while for someone to get back to me still to make sure? I don't want to do anything wrong.
I just commented a few people who have it marked as read within the last month and I'm still waiting on my friend Dawn also.
I just checked my library website as well and they have it just like you said, with the same title for Devrraux.

message 8: by jenjn79 (new)

jenjn79 | 564 comments I would go ahead and do it.

My guess is that some people there thought they were listing Deveraux's book, and some people were just listing anything by Hannah that popped up on a search or author page. Short of messaging each person, there's no way to know for sure what exactly they intended to list.

So yeah, I would go ahead and make the changes. But if someone disagrees, feel free to say so ;)

Cait (tigercait) | 4988 comments I'd suggest waiting a little longer to see if anyone you've contacted gets back to you -- once you merge user reviews or ratings you can't pull them back again, so it's a pretty final move.

Eva-Marie Nevarez (evamarie3578) | 753 comments I haven't heard from a single person yet but I do have to say, I totally agree with you.
I've been coming across an insane number of hand entered listing where the member only lists a title and author and nothing else. These are books that are already in the system, under the correct author and everything so I don't know if they didn't search or if they just wanted to enter it themselves.
I usually send them a message with a link to the "real" listing and explain to them that we try to keep multiple listings down, that it's important to enter in the title, author, ISBN, publisher, date published, etc. when adding a book to the system.
Is that what you and everyone else does? I couldn't see not telling the person (unless they aren't active anymore) because then they wouldn't learn how to do it (or not to do it) in the future.
I've even had a few thank me. LOL
I'll go ahead and fix it now- thanks Isis!

Eva-Marie Nevarez (evamarie3578) | 753 comments Aaaaah! I didn't do it yet everyone! LOL
Okay- I guess it won't hurt to wait awhile longer- anyone who sees the listing from now until then will be few and far between I'm sure.
I commented/messaged about five different people, all active, so surely someone will get back to me soon!
Thanks Cait and Isis- I'm glad I have you guys to ask!
I'll post here when I hear from someone/fix it too!

jenjn79 | 564 comments When a "blank" entry is an entry of an obvious book...like someone couldn't find Grissom's "The Firm" for whatever reason and entered a new entry, you just need to combine it with the rest of the books and then delete the blank entry. That way the people who had that blank entry will still have a version of the book they wanted on the shelves. I don't message people when I come across things like that. I only message people when there is confusion on what the book is that they've entered (i.e. title is not entirely correct or wrong author).

Eva-Marie Nevarez (evamarie3578) | 753 comments I just asked a question about this on another post so thanks for explaining it to me Isis.
I didn't know that a combined listing could be deleted. I would just click on 'details' from the combine page and delete it that way? That's just an assumption because I haven't ever tried it and didn't know it could be done.
I'm really more into very simple edits- like spelling mistakes, trying to get the listings to all look orderly, simple combining, stuff like that. But I do like learning more so thanks!

message 14: by jenjn79 (new)

jenjn79 | 564 comments Yes, that's pretty much what you do. Before deleting any entry, you should always try to combine it with entry/entries it was intended to be. Then you just go back to that blank entry and delete it as usual. Any reviews, ratings, shelf listings that were associated with that "bad" entry will then merge into the most popular entry of the books you combined it with. And the people who listed that bad entry will show as having the most popular.

Cait (tigercait) | 4988 comments The librarian manual has a little write-up on this and some other things that may interest you soon! I know I originally joined the librarian volunteers in order to upload book cover images...and look at me now.... *grin*

message 16: by Eva-Marie (new)

Eva-Marie Nevarez (evamarie3578) | 753 comments That makes so much sense to me now. I only realized that clicking on that 'details' link would even take you to the page. I just thought it showed the details in a little pop-up box. So now I know!
Thank you so much to both of you!
That's pretty cool about why you joined and now you're helping others- I joined because I was tired of seeing the listing look so different from each other and I still haven't figured out why so many listings (they do come from amazon right?) have so many errors in them. Just punctuation left out, that sort of thing. I don't go on amazon much, only to order and then right back over here but I can't imagine why they would have their listings be so incorrect.

message 17: by Eva-Marie (new)

Eva-Marie Nevarez (evamarie3578) | 753 comments Okay! I just heard back from a woman I know who had read the book and she said it definitely is by Deveraux and I changed it to her name and combined it with the real listing. I went and tried to delete the wrong listing and it needs a super librarian.
I supposed I should have posted this in the other post. But I wanted the people who helped me to see it and know there was a conclusion so I guess I'll leave it. This is the WRONG listing here-

Thanks again!

message 18: by jenjn79 (new)

jenjn79 | 564 comments Okay, I deleted the wrong listing.

message 19: by Eva-Marie (new)

Eva-Marie Nevarez (evamarie3578) | 753 comments Are you sure Isis? I just looked and it seems like you deleted the right one to me. You know more about it then me but I just checked it out.
When I said "wrong" listing I meant it was the one to be deleted. Did I say that wrong? It sounds like I did!

message 20: by jenjn79 (new)

jenjn79 | 564 comments Oh...LOL...I meant I deleted the listing that was bogus. Just said it wrong ;)

Eva-Marie Nevarez (evamarie3578) | 753 comments Oh man. Wow. I'm turning my computer off and climbing into bed now. I'm scared to use thw word 'wrong' now! I totally get what you mean but wow- that flew right over my head! LOL
