Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments I noticed that some of you here have marked to-read The Cannibal Within. I've been in touch with the author, Mark Mirabello, and he said he would join in on any discussions we have of his book.

It's interesting when authors join discussions at GR. I was involved in a thread about the book The Gargoyle, and Andrew Davidson got joined in and answered everyone's questions and made comments. And Gord Rollo has graced us with his presence here many time.

I really enjoyed The Cannibal Within.

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments I just ordered my own copy through work. Can't wait to discuss it with you and any others who want to read it.

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments I posted a review of his book here, he sent me a PM thanking me, and we've chatted some since then. He's a very nice guy.

William (acknud) | 0 comments Do having authors in the groups and on your friends list make it difficult to give an accurate appraisal?

message 6: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments No. Lots of authors become "friends" with hundreds of people just to promote their books. Most authors you don't know one-on-one too well at GR.

I would never say something about a book that I didn't truly feel no matter how well I know an author. I might temper the negative a little, but I would never praise a book I didn't think deserves praise.

I think members of HA were honest with Gord Rollo, whom I feel appreciates everyone's honesty. Not many people write a perfect book, and it's probably a learning experience to know how the readers feel.

Paul | 122 comments Then again, it is much easier to be honest with someone (on a friend list or not) if they are three thousand miles away and communicating via forum. It would be a great deal harder to say "Fred, apart from that good bit in Chapter Two, your book sucks..." if you were face to face.

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments I think I'd have more trouble being honest with a friend on the phone than face-to-face. We're social animals who talk with our hands and facial gestures, and this helps to soften the blow, IMO.

When I need to tell someone something they don't want to hear, I have this thing I do where I pause, shrug my shoulders, and make this clicking sound with my mouth before I say, "Well, I'm going to be honest..."

If you ever want me to read your screenplay...lol.
