A cautionary tale for zombie enthusiasts on Facebook: Our book - The Burning Z – a novel where zombies go to the Burning Man festival - just launched and we created a Facebook page in advance for the book. We were thrilled – in less than two weeks before the official launch the page received 640 likes with minimal promotion, and we were enthused about the potential for the Facebook page to reach and connect with our audience. Facebook then unpublished the page without warning right at our launch date, stating we had violated Facebook terms by conducting “bullying” on the page. We were mystified. The page was very vanilla in terms of content, was not graphic, profane, violent, etc – it would not be good business to be inappropriate – and comments were few as a relatively new page – with one sentence entries like “I am down with zombies”, “I am ordering the book” and “Who did your cover art?”. We were given a link to appeal, which we did, and six hours later, we were given final notice the page was permanently unpublished with no recourse, and no means of contact or further appeal. In researching, Facebook often identifies Terms violations such as bullying through automated means. In all likelihood, no human from Facebook ever reviewed our page, and verbiage associated with zombie discussions: “living dead” etc. may likely trigger their algorithms to flag their Terms violations for bullying. We have attempted follow up contact – which is difficult to say the least – and in checking, others who have experienced similar situations sometimes get their page restored, but many months later. This situation evidently happens more than one might think – often deservedly I’m sure, but we are not the only ones who have fallen in the cracks. Anyway – we wanted to share this information with Goodreads' Facebook audience/
