Eva-Marie Nevarez (evamarie3578) | 753 comments Isis- if the pic is on amazon is this something we can do by ourselves? I remember seeing some kind of link about using amazon on the edit page. I'd just like to know for future reference. :)

jenjn79 | 564 comments There is a link on the edit page to refresh data from Amazon.

BUT...it has to be used carefully. Clicking that link will rest much of the data for the book. So say someone has edited a book to add series info, correct page data, and a more accurate description. If you click the refresh link, the Amazon data will overwrite all of that.

I try to use the link sparingly since it may actually do more harm than good. When I do use it, I usually open the edit view of the book twice (i.e. I have 2 tabs of the same thing) and in one I click refresh then compare the data between the two tabs and transfer any pertinent data from the un-refreshed tab to the one I refreshed.

...hopefully that made sense.

Isis, Great idea and a good habit to have!

Eva-Marie Nevarez (evamarie3578) | 753 comments It makes perfect sense and I'm glad I asked you instead of someone who didn't know all of that and only said yes, the link is there!
I've seen a lot of listings where the book cover isn't shown and I just got a scanner (and have A LOT of books...LOL) so once I learn how to use it I'll make sure the ones I own have covers but this is good to know for the others.
As long as I can make sure the other info is the same I can upload the cover pic. Thanks a lot Isis- I don't know how you guys keep all of this in your heads!

After having to redo data a couple of times after clicking the refresh link, I figured there had to be a better way!

There's actually a little trick that works if you are just wanting the cover refreshed...open the edit window in two tabs. Click refresh in one and get the cover refreshed. Then, assuming your un-refreshed tab has stuff you want to save (like series labeling), go back to that tab and click the save button. That will re-save the data you want, but also keep the cover you refreshed in the other tab. I've found that to be very helpful.

I initially became a librarian here to do book covers. It kinda spiraled from there ;)

The best advice for new librarians or ones unsure of things is just to just be careful...better to be safe than sorry. Some librarian work is straitforward, and some is a little tricky. If there's ever something your unsure of, just ask here. We're always happy to help :)

Eva-Marie Nevarez (evamarie3578) | 753 comments I do have a quick questions- when you see people, especially new members, adding books incorrectly do you just fix them or send them a message telling them it's being fixed and how to do it correctly the next time?
I've sent a few people a message on what was wrong and how to do it right and have gotten a few thank-yous. Then I started thinking maybe I shouldn't be doing that? I just figured though, if they're doing it wrong and no one even tells them and no one tells them what's wrong with the listing then they'll just do it over and over again. I know I would. :)
Is this okay?

jenjn79 | 564 comments I've only messaged people when I've noticed they are consistently doing something they shouldn't on a lot of books. Like someone who unnecessarily manually adds a lot of blank editions, or changes data on a lot of books in ways they shouldn't.

When it's just a couple mistakes, I usually just fix them and move on.

I do this too. Two caveats though: it doesn't always work (not sure why), so don't close the second tab until you're sure it did; and pretty sure it works in FF but not in IE.

I've only tried it a couple of times and it's worked so far, but good to know it might not always.
