Karen ⊰✿ | 412 comments "What?! You haven't read The Hunger Games??!!

I know... we are a bit behind the times... But if you'd like to be fashionably (or is that embarrassingly?) late to start this series with us then please just be clear in your comments what chapters you are referring to and use spoiler tags when necessary.

About this buddy read
We will start reading on the 3 June. I have put a loose schedule below. If you want to read faster or slower, that is fine, just be clear about what section of the book you are going to comment about and use the spoiler tags.
The page numbers below refer to this edition of the book
The Hunger Games (The Hunger Games, #1) by Suzanne Collins
so I have also included chapter numbers if you have a different edition

June 3 - chapters 1-5 (pages 1-88)
June 4 - chapters 6-10 (pages 89-178)
June 5 - chapters 11-16 (pages 179-267)
June 6 - chapters 17-21 (pages 268-352)
June 7 - chapters 22-end (pages 353-454 end)

Every time I see someone start this series (and other favourites) I'm envious that you have it all to read for the first time.

message 3: by Karen ⊰✿ (last edited May 07, 2013 03:51PM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Karen ⊰✿ | 412 comments lol. Oh I hope everyone's expectations don't weigh too heavily on my mind!
To be honest I had no interest in the series at all as I didn't like the concept of it. But so many people I know LOVE it, and I challenged myself by reading another book with a tough concept
Unwind (Unwind, #1) by Neal Shusterman
which I really enjoyed, so I took a deep breath and decided when Anima suggested this, that I really should get on the bandwagon!

I feel the same way Lynn! You guys enjoy reading the Hunger Games. :)

Cathie (catitude) | 1511 comments Unwind was an amazing book Karen. ~ One of my favorites.(but brutal in concept.)

Karen ⊰✿ | 412 comments Yes, very brutal! The ending is still scorched in my brain..lol!! But I am reading the sequel this month over with Jex so clearly I enjoyed it enough to go back for more.. I just needed a break after the first one.. haha

Cathie (catitude) | 1511 comments I didn't know you and Jex were doing the sequel together; pout. You must let me know what you think of it (without giving anything away of course).

I loved The Hunger Games. :) I hope you ladies enjoy it! I really want to read Unwind too. I haven't gotten to it yet.

message 11: by Cathie (new)

Cathie (catitude) | 1511 comments Unwind is definitely a book that needs to be shared. Karen and I were part of a group reads on another club here. You and Lynn could read it together, when you find some time (haha)

Kristie | 6822 comments Mod
Hahaha...I know! I definitely do want to read it. I'll post a buddy read when I have some time to add it to my list.

Karen ⊰✿ | 412 comments @ Cathie - you should join the discussion with the other group (if you can fit it in!!), we are going unstrung and unwholly as one buddy read starting May 16

@Kristin - absolutely, feel free to comment along the way. It's always interesting to get a perspective from someone reading a second (or third!) time :)

And I agree with Cathie, Unwind is a great book for sharing Kristie and Lynn!

Cathie (catitude) | 1511 comments Karen, I already have a couple scheduled for May 16th time, but...maybe, lol. I'll check it out

Thanks Lynn!

message 17: by Cathie (new)

Cathie (catitude) | 1511 comments Karen, I can't get a copy from the library by the 16th (too many holds) so I will have to pass on UnWholly for now. But, I have a feeling that after Unwind, Lynn and Kirstie will want to read UnWholly and maybe I'll be able to join them (hint, hint,;-) )

Karen ⊰✿ | 412 comments Lol true :)

Haha sounds good Cathie! (Pretty soon we'll be scheduling reads in 2014! Lol)

Anima Miejska | 1698 comments I read the synopsis of Unwind, and decided it is another must-read , so I will try and squiz it somehow to join in November :)

And I'm really happy I can read HG as a buddy read, I think there is going to be much more from this reading due to that. Thanks, Karen :)

Karen ⊰✿ | 412 comments No worries - thanks for the suggestion! I'm looking forward to it :)

message 22: by Jojo (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jojo (jojosbooknook) | 717 comments I may join you guys for a reread!!

Anima Miejska | 1698 comments Great, Joanne :)

Karen ⊰✿ | 412 comments Cool! I'm quite looking forward to this. Will be great to have input from people re-reading too, hopefully you get a different perspective second time around!

message 25: by Jojo (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jojo (jojosbooknook) | 717 comments It's one of my go to rereads and I haven't read it in a while so I might as well read it now!! Are you planning to read at your own pace or have a reading schedule?

Vanessa if you can wait that long we've scheduled a buddy read later in the year, for November.

Savanes | 2107 comments Lynn wrote: "Vanessa if you can wait that long we've scheduled a buddy read later in the year, for November."

Yes I've noticed! I added myself to the discussion (I guess :S)

:)

Karen ⊰✿ | 412 comments @Joanne - I haven't picked up the book from the library yet, but when I do, I'll post a loose schedule. I generally aim for about 50 pages a day unless the book really sucks me in then I will go faster!
Provided everyone clearly states at the top of their post what chapters they are referring to and use the spoiler tags then that allows everyone to go at their own pace, but still join the discussion.
I have to say, I have high expectations for this one now...lol

Karen ⊰✿ | 412 comments @Vanessa - thanks! I hope you enjoy Unwind later this year. I'll enjoy watching you guys discuss it :)

Michelle (shelld79) This has to be one of the best series I have read. I hope everyone who hasn't read it yet enjoys it as much as I did!

message 33: by Portia (new) - added it

Portia OK, I'm in.

Karen ⊰✿ | 412 comments Great Portia :)

Bruna (bruns) | 3 comments I m sittting this one out as I already read all 3 a while back.

Eleri coincidentally I was going to start these soon anyway (: had them in the house pretty much since they came out but just hadn't really had time to get into a trilogy. however I've only heard great things and can't wait to get started (:

Anima Miejska | 1698 comments Eleri, that's great, welcome to the buddy read :)

message 38: by Stuart (new)

Stuart | 35 comments I think I will Join in too.

I saw the Movie and wasn't overly impressed but I always get told to read the Books.

Karen ⊰✿ | 412 comments Great. Welcome Eleri & Stuart!

message 40: by Karen ⊰✿ (last edited May 19, 2013 11:22PM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Karen ⊰✿ | 412 comments I picked up the book from the library today. Although it is about 450 pages it is pretty big font, so I have had a stab at a suggested reading schedule based on what for me would be about 30 mins a day of reading and I have put that in the first message. This is only suggested, but helps (I think) to keep everyone on track and discussing the same sections at similar times ;)
Of course feel free to keep your own pace, as we will use spoiler tags where required.

Anima Miejska | 1698 comments Thank you, Karen. That's really helpful in planning reading day by day:)

message 42: by ✿Claire✿ (last edited May 20, 2013 04:00AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

✿Claire✿ (clairelm) I was another one who was really unsure about reading this, it sounds such a horrific concept, but I watched the film one day and got hooked. Then decided I'd read the books. I'd be no good with group reading it though, I think I read the first two books in a day each!!

Anima Miejska | 1698 comments Still, Claire, join the discussion, you can do it any time you want, just use spoilers and the info to which part of the book/books you refer :)

message 44: by Stuart (new)

Stuart | 35 comments Got my book 1 copy bought & loaded up today .

message 45: by Anima (last edited Jun 01, 2013 11:01AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Anima Miejska | 1698 comments Great, Stuart, keep us updated on the progress. :)

I'm in 50%, but I feel that I'm flying through the book as I watched the movie two weeks ago and many episodes are easier to imagine.

Still, I like the book better, especially that some characters are pictured differently in the book and in the film. I cannot wait to start the second part.

Eleri I promised myself I'd be patient with this and try and pace myself but I've almost finished - just couldn't help myself!
it's so gripping and easy to read you just fly through.

Savanes | 2107 comments I wished I hadn't read them already so I can go through that "I can't book the book down" phase & "I need to get my hands on the next books". Enjoy HG guys!

Karen ⊰✿ | 412 comments June 3 - chapters 1-5

Wow. Ok so I am really impressed so far! Remember I am probably one of the only people left on the planet who hasn't read the book or seen the films and I really like the writing style and the characters. I can't help but wonder why they all go along with this including the tributes (wouldn't you try and make alliances and not kill your friends?!) but I guess that will come out in time.
I feel so bad that Peeta is there too - I can't see her killing him! And when Katniss did put herself forward as the tribute I actually choked up! Ah! What a softie I'm becoming! Lol!
I have many other thoughts, but it is late here and so I shall save them until tomorrow's reading :)

message 50: by Cathie (new)

Cathie (catitude) | 1511 comments Hey Karen; just popping by for a boo :-). You are not alone. I haven't read the books or seen the movies...yet.
