Bryan Craig Welcome, Steven. Great to have a retired diplomat in our ranks. Thanks for joining.

Take a look at our Civil War folder and feel to add suggestions/discussions:
http://www.goodreads.com/topic/group_...

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the reply box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how the book you've mentioned should look:

Take a few moments to read the orientation:

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask us moderators. I look forward to your postings.

I also have an MA in American History, with a focus on race relations in the turn of the 20th century south. I studied at USM under Dr. Neil McMillen. Khadijah Hi, I'm Khadijah, an American-Egyptian living in Cairo, Egypt. I majored in Mandarin Chinese, but I'm also learning 2 other Asian languages. My job though doesn't involve languages, I work for an NGO for breast cancer.

I tend to be interested more in non-fiction, especially biographies, and historical fiction. But I'll read just about anything if it seems interesting. My favorite history topics are Asian and Native American histories, but I'd like to read more about general American history to connect with my heritage.

I'm kind of limited to what I can get my hands on here or when we go back for family visits. But so far, I've read these:
Bound for Canaan The Epic Story of the Underground Railroad, America's First Civil Rights Movement by Fergus M. Bordewich by Fergus M. Bordewich
Undaunted Courage Meriwether Lewis, Thomas Jefferson, and the Opening of the American West by Stephen E. Ambrose by Stephen E. Ambrose

But my years of interest range from c.330 to c.1815, and specifically the High and Late Middle ages, along with the Early Modern Era. As of now, I'm interested in Iberian continental and colonial influence, European contact with Africa and Asia from the 15th to the 18th centuries, Late Tudor and Stuart England, and the Protestant and Counter-Reformations among others.

Hello David and James,

Welcome to the History Book Club - I just want to point out first our rules and guidelines and our no self promotion rule:

http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/5...

I have reposted your intros minus what we consider self promotion and I invite you to repost minus those segments as evidenced below:

David posted:

We ask folks to be mindful of our rules when reposting and not mention that they are an author or shine the beam on other endeavors that they would like to market. Thank you both for your understanding and we hope you enjoy your time here.

All, take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment.

It makes things much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. It also helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link after all of the text of your post at the bottom of the post. Placement at the bottom of the post calls the reader's attention to the book and/or author and increases the readability of your post.

Here is how a book you might mention would be cited:

Please take a moment to read over the information available below

More information: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/2...

Guidelines: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/5...

For those of you love Presidential Histories: we have two discussions going on regarding two former presidents (FDR and Wilson):

Here are the links:

The Wilson one is finishing up but it is never to late to jump in even now - we will always respond and the threads are always open.

Here is the link to the folder on Presidents in general:

If you have any questions, please contact one of the moderators. And the best advice that I can give is stick to discussing your love of history minus self promotion. In time once you have made some contributions to the group and have been a member for awhile - we do have a thread where one of the moderators will post and mention your work - but that is only done by one of the moderators. Thank you your cooperation in advance.

James Gannon | 1 comments Thanks for setting me straight on the rules. Is it permissable to tell you of my current research interest? I would like to know as much as possible about the upbringing and early manhood of Benjamin Church, 1639-1718. Church performed extraordinary feats during King Philip's War, 1675-76, and pursued his military career (less successfuly, I might add) in five expeditions to Acadia (Maine and Maritime Canada) from 1689 to 1704. He is considered in military circles as a great Indian fighter, "the first Ranger," and the foundng fsther of Special Operations. My question is, how did this military genius rise out of the Puritan culture apparently without military training?

It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link after all of the text of your post at the bottom of the post. Placement at the bottom of the post calls the reader's attention to the book and/or author and increases the readability of your post. This is how books you mention should look:

Augustus The Life of Rome's First Emperor by Anthony Everitt by Anthony Everitt Anthony Everitt
