Marguerite Hi, my name is Marguerite Barrett, and I am I am generally interested in English/British history, American History, and socio-political causes, effects and impacts surrounding wars. My original career goal was to be an academic, and specialized in 17th century English Literature. However, as jobs were scarce I walked away ABD and turned to the life of an armchair historian. Looking forward to participating in this group, and getting recommendations from other members.

Katy (kathy_h) Welcome, Marguerite. Glad you could join us.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

Michael (themichaelbusby) | 1 comments Hello, all, I am Michael and live in Kentucky. I am employed as a World Geography instructor at a couple community colleges, teach World Geography and Map Analysis at a small regional university, and manage a GIS/remote sensing lab at the same uni. I've always enjoyed biographies of people, from scientists, explorers, to world leaders. World War Two history, in spite of the years, is fascinating, especially with the trove of information awaiting discovery in Russian archives. The stories of science born of WW2 necessity are amazing, Tuxedo Park and Bletchley Park. Both the histories of science and the histories of geographic discovery I find captivating. Thanks for allowing me to join :)

My principal interest with respect to history is early-modern civilization and it's impact and influence on our present culture and world order. I love history because it's our chief guide to what the future may hold, and one of our only avenues to truly understand and make sense of the present. It's a pleasure to be part of the group.

My name is Jan Willem Schaper and I'm from the Netherlands. I'm 43 years old and I work in a government department. I love reading non-fiction, especially history and science (physics, mathematics) I'm still updating my Goodread Bookshelf but I very much enjoyed books like Christopher Hibbert 'Florence: Biography of a City', or more recently Simon Montifiori 'Jerusalem".Even when I'm reading fiction, I tend towards the more historically orientated works of fiction like the books by Umberto Eco. Anyway, I'm open to new things and for that reason I joined this group. I'm looking forward to suggestions and comments by the other members and hope to maybe add some of my own.

Ceroth Paul | 18 comments Hi everyone,

My name is Marian. I live in Portland, OR but am originally from Louisiana. I have a great interest in history. Reading history is one of my main topics to read along with Science Fiction and Fantasy. My areas of interest include World War II, The Civil War, The Revolutionary War and the founding of The United States. I also am interested in Medieval History, Roman History, English History. To tell you the truth, I love all history.

message 1379: by Sean (new)

Sean Crandall | 1 comments My name is Sean Crandall, I'm currently a 7th grade American History teacher, and have taught American History, World History and Civics over the past 8 years. I hold college degrees in History, Art History, and Secondary Social Studies Education and have read and been exposed to a variety of historical perspectives. These days I generally read less secondary material when it comes to history and I immerse myself in the documents from the past. My hope in joining this group was to find out about books/authors that have new and exciting perspectives of history to share. My interests are widespread, though I have found myself gravitating to the following topics in recent years: Ancient Rome, China (from around 500 to 1500), World War I, and the Civil Rights Movement. Honestly, if a historian/writer is engaging I can care less about the topic.

I'm 30 now, and I have a degree in Military and World History.

If I was to list my interests it might include a bit of everything, but overall subjects of interest include International Relations, Politics and Economics. More specifically I am fascinated with Africa, the Middle East, China, Russia, the Cold War, WWII, Communism, the United States, 19th and 20th centuries and current affairs.

I love traveling wherever and whenever I get the opportunity; I've been lucky enough to have visited some 50+ countries so far. Right now I am in the early stages of opening an Eco-Lodge/Hostel in Panama with 2 friends/business partners.

I couldn't believe how lucky I was to find goodreads, I am really looking forward to getting involved here as much as possible. I like to put a lot of thought into the books I read so this place will be perfect to swap suggestions and share opinions.

Well, not much else to say; glad to be part of the site and I'm looking forward to making the most of it.
