The History Book Club discussion

I have always been fascinated by history, which started when I was a child and was talked through the "family tree" which actually can be traced back to William The Conqueror through a few marriages. This led to my reading books about 1066, King John, and English history right up to Queen Victoria when I was still a teenager. Then on to American history and French history and it just goes on and on. My interest in history appears to have been absorbed by my grandchildren and great nieces and nephews who have all done brilliantly in history at school. I have recently done an in-depth study of South African history with particular reference to the Jameson Raid at the end of 1895 - a reckless attempt to take the Transvaal and its goldfields for the British Empire.

I have lived/traveled/worked in Central Asia and Eastern Europe, I have an affinity for histories of these areas, particularly things written in the 1800s by early American travelers. This past year I have read quite a bit of Greco-Roman history as well. I also like economic history as well as Christian church history.

Hi everyone, I'm Christi. I'm an American living in Germany, soon to move to England, it seems. I'm particularly interested in the way history relates to current events, attitudes and habits. Lately I find myself trying to explain the "American perspective" (as a Midwesterner, as if there's only one perspective) to people from other backgrounds. I joined this group because I'm looking for particular recommendations on this topic: the roots of current American race relations, for example, or the philosophical basis of American exceptionalism. I want to converse kindly, respectfully, and clearly on these kind of fraught topics. I want to more formally educate myself about the culture in which I was raised.
I also enjoy reading about the history of various diseases, the Middle Ages in general, WWI and the early 20th century.

But mostly right now I'm trying to focus because my boyfriend's English kids (late teenagers) have a lot of questions (and opinions, frankly) about racism and the police and it's just a little too pat to say what comes to mind at the moment, which is, "You can't understand because you weren't raised there."

Hello. My name is Bruce and I am a software developer from San Diego. I am a bibliophile and a history buff with a particular interest in Southeast Asia and World War II in the Pacific. I read a fair amount of fiction as well, but little historical fiction, as I find (to replay the cliché) the truth is most often more interesting than fiction.
