Bryan Craig Welcome, Bill. Glad to see another presidential history buff out there. We have a Truman topic:

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you are ready to cite a book. (There is a link on the top right of the reply box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how a book should look:

The Passage of Power (The Years of Lyndon Johnson, #4) by Robert A. Caro by Robert A. Caro Robert A. Caro

Take a few moments to read the orientation:

Kurt Deg (Enske) | 2 comments Dear All,

Hello, thanks goes to the moderators for accepting me in this group. I joined The History Book club because I mainly read non-fiction WW2 and WW1 related books. At the moment I am a student studying pharmacy and hopefully continuing my work in pharmacology in Matla.

Presently, related to history, I am researching the German medical units of WW2, particularly paratroopers.

Regards
Kurt.

Welcome to the group, Amanda. I'm certain you will find topics of interest here.

As you get started please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link after all of the text of your post at the bottom of the post. Placement at the bottom of the post calls the reader's attention to the book and/or author and increases the readability of your post. This is how books you mention should look:

Dodie Blocker (dodieblocker) | 1 comments Well Hi Everyone!

My name is Dodie. I am 42 years old and live in Texas (USA).
I just recently found Goodreads and hope to enjoy my time here.

To be truthful, I never enjoyed history. As a teenager, my thoughts on history where "why do I need to learn about dead people". I kept this mindset forever, up until I had to take US History for nursing degree. I found I really enjoyed it, and couldn't wait to talk to my husband about what I had read that day (he is a history junky). So here I am, at age 42 trying to suck up all I can.

In my search for anything I can find to read on history, I have found that I am extremely interested in slavery. I know it is a sore subject for some, but I think it is imperative that we know what happened. I usually read memoirs about this subject. I have found that getting the information straight from the victims is of best quality and truthfulness.

Other subject intrigue me but it has to...HAS TO be nonfiction. I am not one for fairy-tales. My interests are also in psychology/sociology...blah blah blah (ha ha) but usually read text books or studies.

Anyway, thats me and my interest in history and books.

Katie (katie1421) Hello, all! I can't believe it's taken me so long to happen upon this group. My name is Katie and the area of history I'm most comfortable reading/discussing is medieval Europe. I have a special fondness for the 12th & 13th centuries, but I'm also interested in medieval culture, science, and intellectual life more broadly. I'm currently working on my dissertation, so there is a lot of reading about medieval Rome ahead of me.

I'd also like to get a better grounding in other historical fields, though, particularly Chinese & early Islamic history.

Robert Lurie | 1 comments Hello everyone. I live in Tempe, Arizona and have been a history enthusiast for about as far back as I can remember. My interests include 20th Century US history: social and political; 19th Century US and European history; the American Civil War; the Middle East; religious history: Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Buddhism, Western esotericism; the Ottoman Empire, the Roman Empire, and the ancient Greeks. I should stress that these are my _interests_ but I am by no means a historian! My actual knowledge is patchy at best.

Bev Walkling Hi, I'm Bev (from Ontario, Canada)and I have no professional qualifications in history but find myself drawn to it, n particular to the history of both the Great War and the Second World War. I am especially interested in how Canadians were involved in the wars. I grew up reading from my father's collection of True POW escape stories (many of which I now own) and was fortunate to be able to interview my own uncle about his experiences being captured in Italy and doing a forced March to Germany where he spent a year as a POW. I am fortunate in having my father's letter's home to his Mom and family and their replies back to him.

Alex Hello, my name is Alex and I'm from Israel. I study CS at BGU university. Historical fiction and history books are my favourite: I'm currently reading The last kingdom by Cornwell. Of course, improving my English through reading also plays a major role.
I joined this group because I wanted to find a good biography about Muhammad (the prophet of the Muslims) and his relationship with the Jews - focusing on the the atrocities he committed on them.
The main obstacle is that most of the books related to this subject are influenced by religious sources and political correctness. Thus, I want to find one which is based exclusively on historical and proven facts.
I'll very appreciate your help!

message 4945: by Daniel (new)

Daniel | 1 comments Hello, everyone! I'm Daniel Shao, and I'm currently a high school junior in the state of Washington. I've had an enthusiasm for history ever since fifth grade, and in the eighth grade I started really reading into my specialty of sorts, which is the history of the Byzantine Empire (in particular that of the Macedonian and Komnenian dynasties). Other topics I enjoy reading about include Napoleonic history, Classical/late Antique history branching off from my interest in Byzantium, Islamic history (again branching off from Byzantium), and the First World War.

I also really enjoy listening to classical music, which has spawned more than a light interest in me for artistic and cultural history, particularly that of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. I don't really have a favorite composer though Mahler, Berg, and Strauss would probably have a fun time fighting it out for that spot. In my spare time I play the cello (at a decent amateur-ish level), though I'm finding that I have less and less of that as my studies get more difficult.

Other interests I have include writing, reading good fantasy, playing chess (not good at it, though), and occasionally doing some reading into philosophy. My goals in life as they are aim towards getting some kind of double major in history and something deemed more employable, and then going into grad school for history later when I can. I look forward to a lot of good discussion with people who have a much stronger background in history than I do in this group!

message 4946: by Douglas (new)

Douglas Emlen | 1 comments Hi everyone,
My name is Doug. I am a biology professor at the University of Montana, where I study the evolution of beetles. My main focus is the diversity and extravagance of the extreme weapons -- horns -- wielded by male rhinoceros beetles.

I have also always been irrationally fascinated by military history, and in particular WWII history. While researching a book on animal weapons I had a chance to dig into the military literature surrounding arms races, which only renewed my love of this field. My problem is that I have very little time these days, so it often takes me a month or two to finish each book (I only get to read for a bit at the end of each evening, for example). So I'm guessing this group will move much faster than I am able. That said, I'm eager to learn of new topics, authors, and titles.

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) Douglas, we are glad you joined us and you can move at your own pace here. I am fascinated that you were studying animal weapons and it led you to military literature....a great segue. At the link below, you will find our Military History topic.

Mark | 2 comments Hello,
My name is Mark. I am a senior noon-commissioned officer edging ever closer to the day I can retire and start my second career as a history teacher. I am very interested in military history from various eras: World War II, US Civil War, Middle Ages Europe, etc. I look forward to joining discussions with fellow history lovers.

Bryan Craig Welcome, Alex. Glad you could join us. We have a number of history of religion topics:

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you are ready to cite a book. (There is a link on the top right of the reply box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how the book you mentioned should look:

The Last Kingdom (The Saxon Stories, #1) by Bernard Cornwell by Bernard Cornwell Bernard Cornwell

You mentioned a biography on Muhammad. Try this one:

Muhammad His Life Based on the Earliest Sources by Martin Lings by Martin Lings Martin Lings

Here are the reviews:

Review
“This work is widely recognized as the most readable account of the life of the Prophet to date.” (Times of London)

"Lings provides a wealth of detail on the life of Muhammad, the time and place of many Koranic revelations, and the foundation of Islam, all based exclusively on 8th- and 9th-century Arabic biographical sources and collections of the sayings attributed to Muhammad. General readers will find a well-written, straightforward chronological narrative; Muslim readers will appreciate the favorable treatment of Muhammad; while specialists will find a faithful and convenient rendering of source material." (Joseph Gardner, California State Univ. Lib., Northridge Library Journal)

“For those interested in Islam . . . it is mesmerizing.” (Parabola)

Martin Lings’s biography of Muhammad is an internationally acclaimed, comprehensive, and authoritative account of the life of the Prophet. Based on the sira, the eighth- and ninth-century Arabic biographies that recount numerous events in the Prophet’s life, it contains original English translations of many important passages that reveal the words of men and women who heard Muhammad speak and witnessed the events of his life.

Scrupulous and exhaustive in its fidelity to its sources, Muhammad: His Life Based on the Earliest Sources is presented in a narrative style that is easily comprehensible, yet authentic and inspiring in its use of language, reflecting both the simplicity and grandeur of the story it tells. The book has been published in twelve languages and has received numerous awards, including acknowledgment as best biography of the Prophet in English at the National Seerat Conference in Islamabad. This revised edition, which represents the final updates made to the text before the author’s death in 2005, incorporates important additions about the Prophet’s expanding influence and his spreading of the message of Islam into Syria and its neighboring states.

Martin Lings (1909-2005) was a renowned British scholar with degrees in English and Arabic from London University and Oxford University. At Oxford, he studied English under C. S. Lewis, who later became a close friend. Lings taught at several European universities and the University of Cairo and served as the keeper of Oriental manuscripts for the British Museum and the British Library. His friendship and similar beliefs with philosophers René Guénon and Frithjof Schuon inspired Lings to convert to Islam. He went on to become an influential member of Western Muslim society, participating in several international Islamic councils and conferences, including acting as consultant to the World of Islam Festival Trust. He is the author of twelve books on religion and spirituality.

Mike | 0 comments Hi group!
My name is Mike and I'm an editor in NYC living in Connecticut. I try to read broadly in history to learn as much as I can, but I tend to drift mostly towards US history. I'm especially interested in The Civil War and post-1960s eras. I'm looking forward to taking part in the lively discussions that seem to take place here! I'm sure I can learn a lot from all of you!
